Our first stop, of course, was the sinkholes and waterfall. While the waterfall itself felt a little underwhelming considering it's described as the highest waterfall in the state, the experience was still quite serene. Hearing the water drop, feeling the cool breeze from the running water, and simply pausing to take it all in made the stop worthwhile. We were a bit disappointed to find that parts of the trail system were closed off, which limited some of our planned exploration. That said, we kept walking and were able to find other trails to enjoy. We ended up wandering around for about two hours, though we know we didn't get to see everything the park has to offer. One of my favorite unexpected features was the dedicated bat habitat area, which was both interesting and unique. Overall, it's a peaceful park with more to discover than meets the eye, and a nice place to spend a couple of hours exploring nature.

We're both considered heavy/overweight by our doctors but this was a moderate exercise for us and since it's cool in the caves (65 degrees), then it was simply something fun to do while looking at the beautify of the stalagmites and stalactites around us. The tour was time "just right", not too long and not too short. I'd highly recommend it to anyone wanting an inexpensive trip to our Florida State Parks (the tour had a nominal feel). It can't be done after a hurricane though because the caves flood and it takes them a LONG time to pump out all the water (I think that Nick told us up to a year), so do it NOW when the weather is right. Tours last around 45 minutes and they run throughout the day from 9am - 4pm Central Standard Time. A limited number of cave tour reservations can be made online ahead of time at floridacaverns.com. This cave tour is pretty straightforward. You enter 65 feet below the surface into 8 illuminated rooms learning insights into limestone formations, mineral deposits, rock columns and fossilized shells. A lot of the rooms are colorful exhibiting a sort of glow in the dark appearance. The tour guide gives background and history into what makes the caverns unique and how they came into existence. Once the cave tour is completed, a great way to continue your visit is by driving 2 miles down the road (within park limits) to check out Blue Hole Spring. This has to be one of the least talked about springs I discovered in all of Florida. An absolute hidden gem, the Blue Hole is a tucked away swimming treasure that lights up turquoise blue colors when the sun is shining. Refreshing off in these waters was the best part about the park visit and quickly put my cave tour experience in the rear view mirror. The waters of Blue Hole Spring are incredibly translucent even while continuing the 2-mile flow through the woods and connecting with the Chipola River. Some extras at the park are...overnight camping for $20, hiking trails, picnic pavilions and launching canoes and kayaks. Overall, Florida Caverns State Park can be a worthwhile stop when visiting Marianna, Florida, with a combination of cave exploring, swimming at Blue Hole Spring and spending time in nature.

Yes, the bridge is locked off from all foot traffic by iron gates. I'm guessing that this was done to prevent the neer-do-wells from filling the interior with graffiti, something I've seen done to other covered bridges. There is access to the bridge from both sides of the creek, but the far side has better parking and even a few picnic benches. The view from there is way better too. Lawmakers needed a central location as the journey from east Florida to west Florida was treacherous during the early 1800s. On a mission to find a mutually agreeable location, two sets of explorers met midway at former abandoned Native American settlement known as Anhaica. This became early Tallahassee which means Old Town (Talia+Hasi) in Creek/Seminole. The first Florida Capitol was a log cabin built in 1824. One hundred years later, a temporary replica was built. Another temporary full sized replica was built in 1974 for the sesquicentennial celebration. My dad was on that committee which inspired him to advocate for building a permanent replica for the bicentennial celebration in 2024. It was so interesting to hear about the process of building this most recent First Florida Capitol replica. So many people donated their time and energy. From sifting through historical records, to creating authentic floor plans when few existed, to donations of logs, to getting permits, it was a challenging to bring this project, a dream for my dad, to life. Having grown up in Tallahassee, I have always loved Florida history. It is nice to see a piece of history being brought back to life and to have my family play a role in that legacy. Florida is so different from when my grandparents moved to south Florida a century ago in the 1920s. I am happy to see history preserved while the city and state continue to grow. #2900

There are walking paths that loop around and through and must go for several miles. They have a small amphitheater in the middle where I'm sure there are performances and concerts here and there. A big splash pad is on one side, and I know the kiddos love that especially on a warmer day. They have a big playground on the other side, and there are some bathrooms as well just in case. Intertwined are some pond/ creek areas that add to the beauty of this park. It's a super lovely walk around, and my favorite part are the pillars towards one end that tell the history of Tallahassee- racial tensions, civil war and repair and more. It brings more light onto the capitol city and its roots.
