The Book Tavern had that wonderful afternoon hum today, the kind that tells you a bookstore isn't…read morejust surviving but actually thriving. It was busy in the best possible way: people drifting between shelves with purpose, a small line forming at the register, and an author set up at a front table signing books while chatting with readers. Moments like that feel like a quiet victory for local culture, a reminder that #LocalBooks still matter and that Augusta shows up for them. I lingered longer than I meant to because the browsing here pulls you in. The front tables were stacked with new releases and staff picks, and the red dot discount display added that little spark of treasure‑hunt energy. The range of subjects is part of what makes the place feel so alive. Politics and gender identity sit alongside fiction and romance, sci fi and fantasy, table games, cookbooks, and a genuinely thoughtful section on Augusta history. It's the kind of curation that reflects a community rather than a trend algorithm. And of course, there's the upstairs. It's one of the shop's best features. Quieter, a little more contemplative, with shelves that reward slow wandering. A busy bookstore on a weekend afternoon is a small civic joy. The Book Tavern manages to feel both rooted and evolving, a place where Augusta's literary life gathers itself and keeps going. [Review 212 of 2026 - 913 in Georgia - 25401 overall]

It has a good selection of new, used and older books. They have a nice children and youth section as well. I found a J.D. After talking to the nice gentleman (sorry I can't remember your name), he told me that they have a website that I can order online and pick it up at the store. Score!! I will definitely be back! I highly recommend this gem.

They've been in business for a long time, and many customers have come to support them for decades, and with a high value selection of comics to choose from, and a community of tabletop and card game players, it's no wonder why this place has been in business so long, I told my friends about this place all the time, and there's darn good reason for that.!

They have a lot more than books too, saw guitars, toys, puzzles, and there's also a buy back section as well to help incentivize you to come back. Was definitely fun to walk through. Expect to pay regular full price for the books, but they have a lot of unusual items (ex. I saw Britney Spears Monopoly Game). There are random 'mystery boxes' for example you can get 50 cds/dvds if you are a gambler or just curious to see what you end up with. The store itself looks like it just popped up in the middle of a giant empty parking lot, so there's no shortage of parking spots.

Amy, the owner, is friendly and her enthusiasm is contagious. The staff was very friendly and, along with Amy, shared about the history of the building and the activities held at the bookshop. In one area of the bookshop there is local history research and archives available to the public. There is also an area for local authors. There are both used and new books, reasonably priced. Recently the bookshop had a Scottish chef/author from Pendleton's sister city in Scotland visit. The bookshop hosted a signing for his fourth cookbook. Patrons can sign up for a newsletter for the bookshop and/or additional information about the art area located upstairs in The Rafter Room (local artists-mostly a cool selection of pottery pieces along with paintings and other items). There is a back door that could be used as a wheelchair entrance. Don't think the second floor is accessible. This is a lovely addition to our historic Pendleton square...a combination of a local historic building and a unique bookshop.
