She definitely knows curls - particularly that everyone's are different and you have to experiment and learn what works. I've never had anyone try different products on my hair and really pay attention to what their impact. She confirmed what I've known for years but others scoff at: that oil actually dries out my hair. As icing on the cake, the price was very reasonable and I love their online scheduling. I came across this salon from their great reviews on Yelp and after looking into their stylists' profiles, I believed they could provide a nice haircut. I have wavy/curly hair and some people don't know how to cut and shape curlier hair. Shannon blew me away with her techniques and how she took my long hair from blah and boring to short and sexy! Super nice couple. Bad haircut, though. I loved everything about the inside of the salon, from how it was decorated to the set up. I went in with an inspo picture, but he told me he had an idea of what he wanted to do. I was told that I had wavy hair, even though I have never once styled it that way. I just don't like how he used a straight razor over my whole head and never used the scissors. The next day, after I showered, there were so many pieces that were longer than the others and my hair was so uneven. I ended up having to go get it fixed somewhere else. Mr. Dean was kind enough to work me in on a Friday when I'd be in town (I live 1.5 hrs away). I had searched high and low for someone who could cut curly hair. I read reviews for everyone in Lexington, Richmond, and Louisville and decided that if Mr Dean could see me, it must be the Lord's will. it was! For the FIRST time in my life, I left with a head of curly hair that looked good. And it's continued to look good. As he cut, he explained my curl pattern and how the cut would maximize it. Shannon has an amazing personality that so nice you feel like you've already been friends with her. Even better she's an amazing worker. She was so delicate with my hair. I went to William Deans salon today and let me tell you they make you feel right at home here. This is the best haircut I have gotten since I can remember getting a haircut last. My hair feels so happy and healthy and Bill and his wife are just so sweet and helpful not to mention THEY KNOW WHAT THEIR DOING! be very careful when you book an appointment from this salon. I booked an appointment with Lauren for Saturday morning at 10am. I am from out of town and did not know the Saturday of my appointment was the Kentucky Derby day. I booked at least 3-4 weeks in advance. the afternoon BEFORE my appointment, while I am at work, Lauren messages me telling me she can not get to & from work because of road closures. she does not know how to keep my appointment. I fail to see how this is my problem I am told by her that I was "being dramatic" and "she did not want to do my hair". how unprofessional and rude. if you live in Louisville, why book appointments on days you do not want to work during such big events? I have waited so very long to have my hair cut & colored - I was so very disappointed by the way I was treated. I wanted my hair done for my son's high school graduation and my vacation to Florida I called the owners - they were apologetic but the damage has been done. Be careful. I'm heartbroken. read more

I began going to William Dean Salon in April (about) 2018. I liked the cut, but Bill wanted to do his own ideas on what my color should be instead of what I wanted it to be. The most concerned complaint was when I needed an appointment for a very important function and I phoned repeatedly and left my number and no one returned botherd to return my phone calls. I didn't mind the $100.00 charge for a cut, and I definitely left a substantial gratuity. I have been living in KY for 2 years and never came across a reliable review for a curly hair stylist. My hair only looked good when wet. I tried every single trick on the book and it looked good just sometimes. When I went to sleep, I woke up with something on my head but definitely not curls! I cannot day enough good things about Bill and Shannon. This was my first time there and i called this morning (on a Monday) at about 11:30am and asked for an emergency appointment as I used a "purple shampoo" that DYED my hair purple (not normally a big deal, I just have a wedding in a week that I need to be blonde for). Not only did Bill hang around for me to get off work at 5pm and come over, he went through everything we could do in one sitting to safely get the purple out. The pictures speak for themselves. Although it's still a little greenish and purple, he gave me some shampoo to help get the color out further and scheduled me to come in later this week for some touch ups to take me back to the white blonde I am. I am so pleased I could hug them. Truly generous people and I will definitely be using them as my normal salon from here on out read more

I went here three times. The first time Bill cut my hair pretty well, so I came back. Shannon cut my hair amazingly the next time, which is why I feel so bad writing this review. I would recommend Shannon. Next time Bill cut my hair and he cut off 4 inches and chopped random spots. It has been a year now and my hair has almost recovered, but he recently did the same thing to my mom's hair. Now I'm terrified to get my hair cut anywhere. read more

It figures that as soon as I'm moving away from a city, I find the perfect hair stylist. I've been trying different salons on and off over the years during my time in Louisville, and have never been that satisfied with my experience. Bill broke that trend, though. William Dean's Salon is conveniently located on Bardstown Road in the Highlands. I walked there from my apartment. It's a great space--very open and comfortable. Bill was incredibly friendly and accommodating. He's a GREAT listener (this is such an important trait when it comes to cutting hair), and gave my hair exactly what it needed. I have really fine and thin hair. This makes it difficult to ever get a haircut that isn't really boring and mom-ish. Usually, people just cut it as one length, claiming it makes it look thicker. I was so bored by this, and wanted something at least a little exciting. Bill gave me some fun choppy layers, giving my hair movement and bounce. I loved it! He also put in some subtle blonde highlights that weren't too bright, but still brightened it up a bit. I highly recommend this spot! It isn't cheap, but I'm willing to pay whatever it takes as long as I'm happy with the result. read more

Shannon is the best hair stylist I've ever been to. She is so wonderful and sweet. She cares so much about her clients. I used to dread going to get my hair cut but now I enjoy it. I love looking at all the beautiful decorations in there. They have parking on the side so if you are worried about trying to find parking in the highlands you will have no problem. I saw a great review about Shannon's artistry with curly hair on Instagram, so being a curly haired gal, I needed to see what this was all about. You see, finding a curly-hair specialist is akin to discovering a unicorn in a pot of leprechaun gold. Shannon was quick to get me in for a shape up of my medium curly locks. The atmosphere is so fun, and it is clear that they approach hair as art. Shannon put on music to inspire her, all while their sweetheart Akita named Xavier looked on. First off, Shannon did a thorough assessment of what products I was using and the nature of my hair. I try to take good care of my hair, and it's mostly healthy, so she suggested an organic coconut oil regimen to add to my daily routine. After washing my hair, she dried it and cut it while dry. This is so important!!!! I've never had a stylist shape my hair according to how the curls lie, and that made all of the freaking difference! She then advised me on styling products. I felt that Shannon really gave me great advice and she spent a ton of time with me...this is no 30-minute speed haircut, which I appreciate. My only criticism was styling...and this isn't unique to this salon. Most stylists spend too much time with drying and handling my hair, and it inevitably ends up frizzing out and looking, well, not how I would prefer. I also went way too short in length and will be happy to see some growth in the coming weeks. If you have curly locks, this place is a gem. Honestly the best hair cut I have every had! As a curly girl, it's hard to find someone who not only know the difference between how to handle straight and curly hair , but act on it! Not only is the cut amazing the atmosphere and attention you receive as soon as you walk through the door is amazing. I followed Echo here, and I love the place. She does a GREAT job, and I always walk away feeling like I look better than I ever have in my life. Today, she gets a double, me and my wife, for coloring, and cuts. I can't wait! Edit: Echo is no longer there. I give them a second star because they use LED lights for energy efficiency, but Echo was the draw. Edit Edit: Changing my rating. I had given this business a low rating due to my frustration at my favorite hair dresser moving. The Yelp system has limitations... you rate a building, not individual employees. I grew my hair out for the longest time so that it would be easy to style and be creative with the cut. My experience was fine, the hair dressers were nice and was surprised he used a "layering technique " but I trusted him from the reviews. But I realize when I home that they cut too many layers, the back portion of my hair is not cut into any layers and is one length. The top part is cut into too many layers. I am disappointed with my cut, spent a lot of money, and want my old hair back. read more

I went in to see Shannon for the first time. I asked for Bill, but he said he was booked and had me see Shannon. At first, she was wonderful talking all about my curly hair and how to treat it. She was very knowledgable, however I've been living with it for a very long time and didn't need so much education. She did pamper me at the shampoo bowl. This was the very first time I felt overpampered. The appointment went entirely too long. I was worn out. I just went in for a hair cut. I loved how she cut my curly hair and was so elated that I finally thought I had found a good one. Boy, was I wrong. She had many interrruptions and I was getting irritated. They are not inexpensive and that time is MY time. When I politely said something to her, she blew up at me. Basically, this was the way it is, she has plenty of clients and her arrogance just kept growing. She said she was not going to cut my hair and she asked me to leave!! I went in to get my roots highlighted and William took care of me. He was very quick, actually much faster than anyone had done my hair before but I very much like the results, a more natural looking highlight that I can wear for longer. So wonderful that my mom now visits her and I actually TRY not to miss appointments!
