It has two levels, and the top was more conventional while the bottom was a display of projects from local schools, arranged by grade level so you can observe human development. I thought it a slightly strange choice to have the museum here and not in one of the snazzy historic buildings on the campus, and it isn't an all-day kind of experience, but I continue to appreciate the role of universities in maintaining access to art for the public everywhere I go.

Like many of the minor league stadiums, every seat is a good seat - and with cheap concession prices and a good ball team, it adds up to a fun day out. The Siegal Center has been home to VCU's basketball home games, graduations, and a number of other…read moreevents. So there's plenty of good memories at VCU's most recognized building. Door staff and security are easy and friendly, the facilities are always clean and kept up nicely. The event staff ranges from friendly to unsuitable but I think they're usually hired by an agency, so we'll take the good with the bad. The Siegel Ctr doesn't leave much for one to desire. Parking sometimes isn't all that fun but it always works out. Good venue for local sports and other events.

Walking is easy but recommend eating before you arrive because it's very hard to get a seat at a restaurant nearby, which is not the arena of course. Seats are ok but roomy enough for normal sized people. There is not much space to allow people to walk in front so you have to get up, like the wave, if anyone has to get up. I managed to wait-others should try it out. The views are great.

This museum is a school, which played a part in Brown vs Board of Education, the landmark Supreme…read moreCourt case. It is only a few hours' drive from the Supreme Court, but it is a world away. I had some apprehensions given the museum's funding sources included some corporate donors, but whatever process went into it, the final result appeared to me to be quality curation. What sets the museum apart its is specificity and reliance on primary sources. There are plenty of generic civil rights museums, but this one gives a clear impression of time and place. The primary source documentation sets forth some ugly sentiments; anyone who thinks that Virginia is not the Deep South is likely in for a rude awakening, but it also illuminates a variety of perspectives that don't mesh well with contemporary social commentary. The students here, many of whom were alive long enough to make it into the introductory movie, set forth a vision of egalitarianism and devotion to excellence. One of them compares the planning of the civil disobedience here to the Manhattan Project in its secrecy and single-minded commitment, a striking analogy. It is not a huge place (indeed, the fact that the school was too small for the student body is kind of the point), but I spent easily over an hour perusing the content even without a tour or special event. There is no charge to enter and the gift shop was not running when I dropped in, but a donation bin was open and I was more than happy to leave something.

The stadium is A+ for views of the game from the seats. There were several empty seats, so we moved around a bit and tried out different locations. All good. Nothing fancy. Traditional college seats and also a berm area. So this isn't NFL style box seats with AC and a food spread type stuff. UVA has great fans and so the atmosphere was excellent. The F-22 flyover by U.S. Air Force captains and UVA alums Chelsea Bailey and Nate Jewell was a nice touch for the 9-11 anniversary. Views away from the seats are not good. In other words, there are not really places where you can be in line for food/beer and still see the game well. There are some old TVs up but they are beat up and very hard to see with sun reflection. Many had little or no sound. The overall concessions were relatively poor in both choice and quality, but with high prices. We ended up not eating at all there. Getting IDed and buying a beer was a lengthy process, all for a very limited selection. Parking is limited so if you are from out of town I recommend walking there from your hotel. Getting through the metal detectors and scanning your tix was smooth and fast. All the staff we interacted with there were good. Overall the game was a good experience despite my Illini getting crushed.
