Wood Ridge Farm Brewery - Prepping for Harvest Fest

    Wood Ridge Farm Brewery

One of my new favorite stops EVER!…read more Woodridge Farm Brewery is one of those places that sneaks up on you and then refuses to let your heart go. This property is massive! Like, "did I just wander into a rustic resort?" levels of big and every corner has its own personality. First stop? The farm market. And listen... I could've spent my entire vacation budget right there. Shelves stacked with homemade canned goods, sauces, jams, salsa, pickled everything, and more pumpkins than Cinderella could handle. Total cozy-country heaven. The grounds are seriously gorgeous. You get these pockets of space that feel secluded and peaceful, almost like a secret beachy cabin retreat dropped into the Virginia mountains. There are tons of tables outside so you can sip and snack in the sunshine, plus a driving range, volleyball pits, and a giant "LOVE" sign that basically begs you to take a photo. Inside, the bar is warm, rustic, and charming the kind of spot that feels like it was built for good drinks and even better stories. They had a food truck the day we visited (I didn't see in-house food options), which just added to that relaxed, festival-by-the-lake feeling. Between the gorgeous scenery, the spacious layout, the drinks, and the vibes? This was easily one of my favorite stops on our travels. 10/10 would go back in a heartbeat.

As usual the food and atmosphere were great. We've enjoyed watching this place grow over the years…read more Our only complaint is the new wine, while good, is way too expensive. Congrats on the well deserved awards but the premium put on it makes it a bit prohibitive.

Every now and then you need to take a step back and soak it all in. My time spent at Misty Morning was wonderful. We signed up for a bread making class. The bread we made was Challah bread. Challah is a special Jewish bread that is typically eaten on ceremonial occasions (the Sabbath) and major Jewish holidays. It was a gorgeous sunny day in late October when we made our delicious Challah bread. We made the more complicated four braid version. This course allows you to make everything from start to finish. We rolled out the dough, we made the braids, and we each took our loaves of bread home with us. You haven't lived until you've eaten fresh Challah bread straight from the oven. We also made the version with cinnamon and sugar. Decedent isn't even close to how good this bread is. While making the bread we also got to learn more about renewable resources and sustainable farming. Misty Morning Sunrise Farm is, you guessed it, 42 acres of sustainable farmland that has been owned and operated by three generations. It was an absolute privilege to walk the grounds and learn more about heirloom vegetables, local raw honey, pasture-raised goats, chickens and bees. We of course got to see the goats and chickens, and even the bees. Yes, I took home some raw honey and of course a dozen eggs. Would I go back? IN A HEARTBEAT. Thanks for everything Misty Morning! You'll be seeing us again.

The blackberry is my favorite, but also loved the pumpkin flavor in the fall. One of my favorite places to visit! Such a beautiful setting to enjoy a cup or cone - and a great spot for berry picking too! Recommend checking their instagram for information on what they're serving and/or picking at that time.

I had just driven by the farm with their giant "pick your own strawberries" sign, and decided to do this in between wine/beer tastings along Nelson 151. *Pick your own strawberries for $3.49 a pound. Apparently you can bring your own container for picking, but they do provide white buckets. *I picked strawberries from Patch #1 which faces the road, but there's more patches in the back, which I wish I'd checked out, because I suspect a lot of people go to Patch #1. So I'd encourage you to be aware of Patches #2-6. *There are portapotties and an outdoor sink set up with soap and paper towels. *They have a small market with some McCutcheon products, strawberries for sale, asparagus, and ice cream in pints. I had a cup of their delicious strawberry ice cream afterward. There are picnic tables scattered under tents where you can enjoy your ice cream (much appreciated shade after strawberry picking under the hot sun).

This really is a crazy and fun little place! All of the animals have names and are free range - like Jack and Jill, the resident turkeys; Diamond, the chicken with a brood of guineas; and Sparky, the old retired pointer who didn't have the attention span to cut it as a hunting dog, but still diligently follows around the hens all day and points at them. This is a great spot for families and kids - all of the animals are well-handled and gentle, and are under great control by the owners. Tours are free, and include interaction with all the animals, great info on farm life and even beekeeping, and believe it or not, you can milk a goat as part of the tour! We didn't do that part - maybe next time :) They also create a great line of high quality goat's milk soaps, home grown luffas, and their own honey. All for sale on site. When we went, you have to call to make an appointment for a tour (they're almost always there at the farm), but they said they're working on maybe having regular days/hours during the peak summer months in 2015. Oh, and they're only about 5 minutes off Hwy 58 between Clarksville and Boydton, and just minutes from Rudd's Creek Campground and Occoneechee State Park...
