Both helpful with tips on what to order from their beer and wine options based off what we told them of our tastes. The grounds and building were very well kept. We chose to sit outside so our kids could run around (6 kids between us and our friend's family). They tried to light a fire for us, but that was the one downfall: all the fuel was wet from recent rain I think, so the fire never really took and we just had smoke for a while and no warmth or flames to enjoy watching. But they tried! We enjoyed all the wines we sampled, and went home with one bottle. All that I tried were dry, well-bodied and smooth. My husband only found the beer so-so, so next time we go he'll probably stick to the wines that he also enjoyed from tasting my flight. The soft pretzels are huge, delicious and delivered hot and fresh. The cheese sauce for dipping them was really tasty and much better than most cheese sauce offered for soft pretzels elsewhere. The staff was very courteous, offering us blankets as it was chilly outside and they saw the fire wasn't thriving. We are only 25 minutes from them, and we'll definitely go back; we were very happy with our visit!

The venue itself is absolutely gorgeous and created the perfect backdrop for our wedding day. That said, there are some areas where we think the experience could be even better. Communication throughout the planning process was sometimes challenging, even when we reached out with questions. On the day of our wedding, our hope was to follow the timeline we had carefully planned so that we could maximize time with our guests. Although our coordinator reassured us things were on track, the buffet ended up starting later than expected. Because of that delay, our reception ended with much less dancing time than we had envisioned. We had chosen a buffet in part because we were told it would be quicker than a plated dinner, but that unfortunately wasn't the case. We share this not to take away from how beautiful and memorable our day was, but because we believe The Mill has all the ingredients to deliver a truly seamless experience. With improved communication and a little more focus on time management, future couples will be able to enjoy every aspect of what makes this venue so special--the incredible food, stunning setting, and joyful atmosphere.

We looked at a number of places in and around Richmond but nothing matched The Mill's beauty nor the warmth and hospitality of Lisa (owner and proprietor) and Kim (day-of coordinator). Throughout the entire process, they were genuinely thrilled and excited to make sure our big day was spectacular. The venue itself may be beautiful, but they truly make it special. They communicated with us every step of the way, fielded our never ending questions, and made every change or update that we needed. During the ceremony itself, Kim was seemingly everywhere, handling everything. She directed us through the whole day and we both felt that she is as necessary as an appendage. If Olivia Pope was a wedding coordinator, she would have learned her job from Kim! A huge kudos to the food and beverage team. Our dinner was over-the-top good. We went with an upscale southern theme - think fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, brisket with a blackberry bourbon sauce (the star of the show!), and chicken and waffles. We received nothing but praise from our guests about the food. They were all delighted! On top of that, the cake was outstanding! We went with their almond cake with whipped almond custard and raspberry preserves. It was so good our guests took most of their second servings with them back to the hotel. Pierre the pastry chef did a phenomenal job! Overall, we could not have been more pleased with The Mill at Fine Creek. I urge anyone considering them to go for the Day of Wedding Coordinator. If you're needing help deciding if The Mill is the right choice, here are some some things that helped us pick them: - Most outdoor venues don't have a plan b for rain (they will make you buy tents just-in-case), but The Mill does. We really appreciated that a lot and it made us feel more secure choosing an outdoor venue. - The Mill has 3 outdoor spots where you can get married: the creek, the pergola (where we got married) and in the mill ruins. No matter where you choose, the entire venue and all of the grounds are yours that day. - You have full use of the Miller's Cottage which is attached to the main house. This was super convenient for us and our party. There was so much space to get ready, take pictures, relax, eat and drink.

For a 32,000+ square foot mansion (that was originally built as a single family private home) the space is immaculately and meticulously clean and maintained to the highest standard. I did not see a single speck of dust, no cobwebs on the soaring ceilings, or stain on any upholstery. The mansion also did not feel austere or cavernous despite its size; on the contrary, it is absolutely bursting with some of the most beautiful, unique, and at times strange but wonderful decor. For example, the game room has both billiards as well as an extensive and exotic big game taxidermy collection, whereas the adjacent two-story library boasts a hand carved fireplace and a spiral wrought iron staircase. I spent most of my evening exploring every room and trying to take in as much as possible. The multitude of staff who serviced our event were both warm in their interactions as well as discreet when necessary. The in-house catering was also very good. We had a tortellini station, a raw bar, breads and spreads, as well as passed hors d'oeuvres and a dessert station, and I enjoyed everything I tried. My only regret is that Dover Hall doesn't seem to do open house hours or guided tours, because I would love to be able to return and see more of this remarkable building.

All the guests came up to me and raved about the food. I have 2 items that disappointed me... The staff started clearing our tables of our water glasses and cocktails 1 hour before the end of the evening! Each time I got up to dance I came back to no more water or my drink. Then at the end of the evening I had to retrieve my car from the dark parking lot. There was no lighting along the walkway to the lot nor in the parking lot. A safety concern that I hope the venue addresses in the near future.
