The raving reviews really oversold this place to me. We travel a lot and with kids, and sometimes we like to find a library for storytime, participate with the locals, enjoy some of the events libraries hold, etc. We've enjoyed sewing classes and STEAM activities all while traveling and not even checking out books. Sometimes we go just to read in a different environment. The reviews cannot rave more. But, having seen many libraries, I can assure you this was fine, but not overly incredible. This place was swarming with kids and parents, very few of which were masked. For some reason, that bothers me in places like libraries. There were also at multiple families who brought in their takeout lunches and were eating their lunches and walking around licking their fingers as their kids were running around. It just seemed more like a community rec center than a library. Kids were playing tag, running all over the place and it was honestly mayhem. Good luck trying to read in that place! We were there about 2 hours and there were no fewer than 100 people in the kids area while we were there. Having just spent a week in Flagstaff, AZ and visiting their library many times over the week, they required masks and limited capacity. This was obviously not the case here. It seemed disorderly. The play structure was neat, but kids were left to play and were not being kind to one another, telling others they couldn't come into the play area, making my 7yo and 9yo feel very unwelcomed. I did find a sweet parking spot outside and the machine charged me for a full 3 hours with a glitch, so I paid the reasonable (but annoying to pay what you didn't ask for) $4.50 for our library trip. There's also a convenient parking garage across the street you can use, also payment required, as is all of downtown Telluride. read more

One of my favorite places in San Miguel county! Helpful and friendly staff, generous use policies (Don't need to live in Telluride proper to get a card, no late fees, etc.), and really incredible amount of services for a mid-sized library. They have ton of free programming for all ages and interest types (versus some libraries that mostly do children's programming). They have unique items to check out other than books and media, like bikes, yard tools, computers, cameras, tablets, board game kits, and tons more. I feel welcome here. read more

Such a great facility! First time to Telluride and was told to visit the library because it's been ranked for many years! I was most impressed with all the live plants--specifically the giant live fig at the landing on the way up to the second floor. Amazing! Also loved the history archives room! Great space to be quiet, read and learn. read more

In college I won the dubious award of "Most Likely to be Found in the Library." I still rack up major time in libraries in whatever town I visit and have strong opinions about how they can save the world. Telluride's Wilkinson Library is a beautiful, community-focused, differentiated space. The first floor is devoted almost entirely to youth. The children's section is clearly organized by topic and fully accessible to little people. They have tubs of magnatiles and legos and wonderful reading nooks. While I didn't spend time in the teen section, the packs of post-schoolday kids seemed to love it. The second floor i more geared towards adults and has large and small meeting spaces, tables, comfy chairs, and helpful staff. Kudos to the town of Telluride for devoting resources to designing and maintaining such a wonderful community gathering and learning place. read more

What a fun library to visit (and judging by how busy it was, it's very popular with both tourists and townies). The children's area was pretty amazing--reminded me of a children's museum because they had so many interactive and play-based learning centers: robotics, building sets, toys, board games, costumes, a treehouse, and more! read more

First time ever leaving a laptop charger at home. Calls to tech shops bombed. Called friends who said to check the library. Second floor has a charging table for any Apple product you could imagine which is a great idea! Sadly I had a Dell. Extremely friendly staff were sympathetic, finally Andy sorted through an office area then basement storage to find what I needed. Everyone was so helpful. Took advantage of the great library while charging. Even remembered my name when returning three days later. This is a community library done right!!! read more
