Not coming back with my kids. I'm surprised a place like this exists in ritzy Southlands. Riding coach Nancy Brook is not certified, though her $80/hour fee and (leased) adjacency to the Southlands Riding Club would have you think so.
I am an accomplished horseman who was looking for a good place to start my two children in lessons. I was stunned at what I saw, and that this place continues to function.
Wildwood is run down and hazardous. Animal Control and the SPCA have visited several times over the years, due to ongoing animal neglect, plus an agressive Pitbull mix who has bitten several people. Ms. Brook has a very pleasant personality, and is apparently adept at nodding "yes" and complying with care orders. Unfortunately, SPCA officers only do very sparse followup, for one year's time. Then Ms. Brook is back to her neglect.
Ms. Brook keeps small pets such as bunnies, guinea pigs and ferrets in tiny, filthy cages in all corners of the property. Some have frozen to death, others have died due to exposure to predators. Imagine what it's like for a tiny creature to be left out at night with coyotes and hawks prowling. They do not receive vet care, and sometimes have no shelter from the weather. They do not get out for exercise. One example is the ferrets who were freezing in her tackroom. She did not even acknowledge their suffering until all their hair fell out.
Her lesson ponies, for the most part, are kept in tiny paddocks with no room for exercise. Their feet are overgrown to an inhumane level. I checked their teeth while assisting in bridling them for my children, and discovered the poor things do not receive dental care. Ponies and horses require annual tooth trims, as their teeth continue growing. These ponies are in pain every time they chew or have a bit in their mouths.
And oh yes, I saw a large rat scuttle up a drainpipe into the barn. The gaping hole around the drainpipe allowed this.
Hardly a place to take animal loving children and show them how to care for animals. Visit the Southlands Riding Club for a list of certified coaches and find a humane one. read more
