    Large Southern Pacific Rattlesnake.

Rattlesnake shake.. Wilderness Gardens would still would have been a fun hiking experience even without seeing the big Southern Pacific Rattlesnake. Other than the long drive to get to this Preserve we had a great time walking through all of easy trails they have here. It's a family friendly experience with one minor hill and some small rocks and boulders in you way. The trails are maintained and are pretty wide so you don't have to worry about snakes ( like my Rattlesnake friend just sitting next the path). A good plan would be to go up the Upper Meadow Trail first. It's my favorite trail here because it's full of green overgrowth and vines. Once at the top you have a great view of the area. There are only three miles of hiking trails here so you can do it all in a few hours. One thing, on some portions of the trail you will hear bees...It can be a little unnerving with the loud buzzing of swarming bees around but I think the hives are not too close to the actual trails. - Can get HOT here, bring lots of water and hats. - Family friendly hike. - $3 to park but the trails are clean and they have chem-cans.. - It was basically empty on a Saturday afternoon.

Opened: Th-T 8am to 4pm * Closed Wednesdays and the month of August (Due to extreme heat) *** What to take? -Water -Hat -Cash ($3) When getting off the 76 into the driveway, turn right to the gate entrance. Drive down the hill, where there is a small parking lot. Park and fill out a pink envelope located on the large green sign. De-attach the top portion to leave on car's dashboard. Then place $3 into the envelope and insert in the drop off box(remember to fill it out). The trails are quite short (less than a mile or so). There is hardly any shade. After the hike, a picnic would be perfect!!!

What a pretty park! They are open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday through Monday. Closed on Tuesdays , Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Closed August 1 to September 4 due to high temperatures. There is a $3 parking fee. I saw the sign when I drove in.. but there was no ranger station in site and no soul to be seen.. so I could not figure out how to pay the $3. So I parked anyway and came back to a ticket. Who put that there, a ghost? What the hell?? I had to mail in a $3 check. One star off for that. If you are coming from the west on the 76, don't look to your right it's a looong way down! There are 4 miles of trails. I'd say these trails are appropriate for beginners in hiking or anyone who wants a peaceful stroll. There was no on else around during a weekday. Nice wide flat trails. The Upper Meadows Trail was more narrow and shaded.. we needed our hiking sticks to clear the spider webs out of the way. Totally worth it though for the views. The pond appears overgrown from ground level but more water can be seen from the Upper Meadow Trail. Definitely work checking out!!

We got to walk with the park ranger today. It was an amazing experience having someone tell you the history of the land. He told us about different plants that native americans used or ate. It was interesting how many things they could eat. It is a pretty flat walk but round up to 4.5 or so miles. There is a bit of included at one point but it's not too bad. I took my 3 kids and will come again!

Wonderful park with some good trails. Great for novice hikers or anyone who enjoys flat trails with some good sights. The are only a few miles of maintained trails but the might be more that I didn't have time to check out. Great to take the family to even for those who don't go hiking. There are picnic tables around the park and a few along the trails. Good for a family lunch. Park closes at 4PM. There is a $3 parking fee.

    Pond trail, in the rain.

Ask the Community - Wilderness Gardens Preserve

Does anyone know of a place to camp during covid?

Is this trail open? It's a little bit of a drive for me and I don't want my little girl to be disappointed if we get there and it's closed.

Yes it it open, they are open from 6:45Am-4:00Pm every day besides Wednesdays, and Christmas. They do also have Ranger led hikes on some weekend days.

Does Wilderness campground have RV spots?

It was very easy to book ahead online and pay for our daily parking pass once we checked-in. The campsite itself is tucked into the forest, very high up on Palomar Mountain. We were all very impressed with the simple but clean and well maintained facilities. We did do a dog friendly hike that starts in the Doane Valley Campground and it's about 4 miles round trip. Some reviewers commented about how the trails are unkempt, and that's mostly true on the Eastern side and the Nature Trail. It wasn't too bothersome, as most of the trails were wide enough. The annoying part, though, is that there's a lot of dry, dead weeds/plants that carpet the trails with little splinters, which inevitably get into my shoes and jab me. Other than that, it's an easy, flat-ish 4 miles of walking. Lots of birds by the lake. Parking is paid in the lot, but there's also free parking along the street.

Note that the trail isn't marked very well, and you'll have to use trail intuition to find your way in the overgrown areas. The trail is mostly dirt, small boulders, and large flat smooth rocks. Expect mud and sand in some areas next to the lake. Not the best hike if you have bad knees. The actual hike was fun ( early spring after many large rainstorms). You'll walk by several Oak Trees and many wildflowers blooming. This is a birders paradise as many waterfowl make their homes here. It's about 4.5 miles there and back unless you are foolish and decided to walk around the ENTIRE LAKE.. That will make your hike 5.5 total. Note there is NO TRAIL to connect Kumeyaay to the South trails on the other side of the lake. Foolishness - So, once you walk to the end of the Kumeyaay Trail ( there is a private property gate) you might get the harebrained idea to cut through the swamp to get to the south side of the lake.. Okay, we did it ( with three kids).. There are a few things to know before deciding to cut across the mash to the other side.. Much of your hike will be through a large stinging nettle forest. If you're wearing shorts forget about going to the other side of the lake. If you have long pants / jeans you should be okay. Next you'll have to go through various reeds and muck. Then you'll have to cross a small stream about ten feet wide, a few feet deep.. You're going to get your shoes wet unless you're one hell of a long jumper. Finally, you'll have to ascend up a vertical cliff to get up to a road..One you're on the South Side of Lake Wohlford you still have a long way to hike to get back to your car. There is no shortcut and you'll have to walk along the busy Lake Wholford Rd for over a mile. Worth it?? Yeah it was pretty adventurous. - Tips I wouldn't kike this trail in the summer. There are soooo many places for rattlesnakes to hide.
