Gooseberry suite
Holly K.

I had an amazing stay at the Wildberry Lodge! Ken and Glinda are very welcoming inn keepers! We booked the Gooseberry room because of the awesome jacuzzi. The room had an amazing view. My only minor issues with the room was that there was no shower just a handheld sprayer as part of the jacuzzi and it could get a touch loud in the morning since it has a bit of an open concept. Again these things were very minor. The bed was very comfortable! The breakfasts were good! Of the three mornings we were there we had sweet cream crepes with turkey sausage, Hawaiian bananas, eggs benedict with hash browns (amazing), strawberry and blackberry crisp, lemon pecan pancakes with bacon, and cheesecake with caramel. The eggs benedict was by far my favorite!! Now the story changes a bit. My boyfriend enlisted Glinda and Ken to help plan a surprise proposal for me. He told me that they were great always emailing him back right away and working with him on all his ideas. They even enlisted a local florist and Glinda handled all the details. Glinda asked Zac and I if we wanted to go take a tour of the honeymoon suite because they had just made a bunch of updates to it. Once we walked in on the rug in front of us was Holly Will You Marry Me written out in rose petals and Ken was already there taking photos and capturing the whole proposal. It was beautiful!!! Zac booked the honeymoon suite for an extended weekend and let me tell you that suite is AMAZING! From the jacuzzi tub that has a waterfall feature, to the shower with ten shower heads, to the amazing view, you cannot go wrong staying in this room. It is the nicest place I have ever stayed! It is about 25 minutes outside of downtown Asheville. But since the room was so amazing and the view was great we stayed at the lodge during the day and then headed into Asheville at night so the distance didn't bother me. But if you want to go back and forth a bunch of times this probably is not the best option. I look forward to going back to the lodge!

But everything else was a solid 3. Nothing wrong with it at all... But, I was underwhelmed based on my previous experiences. When we checked in, the host was fine. The room was fine. The bathroom did leave some things to be desired. There was not a good place to put your toiletries. We also had to climb into a very deep bathtub to get to the shower... If you are clumsy, like me, you may walk away with a couple of bruises. The house itself was very pretty, and was decorated in a manner appropriate for the property. I would've liked to seen some warm blanket to sit out on the patio with, board games, or puzzles to pass the time. There was only one sofa, and it was not in a cozy little nook where you would want to hang out. The food was fine. The menu is heavy on carbs and sweet breakfast treats. They were executed well enough. But there was not any particular breakfast that knocked my socks off. Again it was fine. The location was very convenient to downtown Asheville. It would be a two minute drive or a 10 minute walk to downtown Asheville. This bed-and-breakfast did not appear to be owned and operated by the hosts, rather an absentee corporation or business. I think that made the difference. Everything was fine, but it didn't have that touch of home that you expect when you stay at a bed and breakfast. For example, when we wanted to use the television, and needed some assistance, when we called the number that was left, the call was blocked. On a whim , we texted Fortunately, they responded right away. But ultimately, after 6 PM you are on your own in terms of staffing. Overall, I can recommend Beaufort House, but I think next time I will try something different.

However, I was expecting this to be a special and elegant experience and it was not. When we arrived during the specific check in time the door was locked and no one was in the front office. It turns out they were showing someone else to their room but we didn't know that. We just stood out on the porch not knowing what to do until someone finally came to the door. There's no reason they couldn't have the front door unlocked during the limited window of check in time. The person who showed us around said there would be "heavy continental breakfast ". However, it turned out the breakfast was probably the very absolute minimum they could provide and still call it breakfast. It was very disappointing. If I'm not mistaken it was only available from 8:30 until 9:30 or something very limited like that. Finally, there was no lotion in our bathroom, only shampoo, conditioner, and hand soap. I would stay there again but I would have to weigh the options of amenities and prices of other hotels. A regular mid price hotel has more amenities than what was offered when we stayed.

Now that we've experience the Chestnut Street Inn and Emilie & Arturo's hospitality, we will never stay anywhere else. The Inn is perfectly located, just a short walk and even shorter drive/uber to downtown. The room we stayed in was adorable and super comfy. We loved the furnishings, soft sheets and towels on the bed, etc. But, the in-room gas fireplace was by far my favorite amenity -- I found myself not even wanting to venture out but rather sit in the room warming my feet by the fire. (Don't worry though, we went out!) Throughout our stay, it was fun to discover all the hidden treats in the common areas. There were homemade cookies and chocolate in every nook and cranny of the place! Breakfast was amazing and prepared fresh each morning. Lots of helpful info way of pamphlets and brochures are all over the Inn but if you need any advice, I'd encourage you to just chat with Emilie. This place is a definite five-star vacation destination…read more Judie and Tom were very nice and had lots of interesting stories and information to share about both the farm and the area in general. We got to hang out with their goats, roosters, and -- of course -- the dogs. Katie is an absolute sweetheart. She slept on the back deck of our cabin for the three nights we were there. Though Katie hung out with us for most of the trip, Poncho and the smaller one (I don't remember her name) only visited us at the cabin once -- and that was when they could smell we had food. That reminds me -- Watch out you don't leave any food out back where the dogs can get them. One of the dogs helped itself to some mashed potatoes from a local restaurant. Luckily, I didn't care for it very much anyhow, so it wasn't a huge loss ;) We visited in December for my birthday, but hope to make another trip again during a warmer season. I'm sure it's amazing out there during the Spring. Even in December with frost everywhere, it was still great sitting by the stream by the barn and enjoying some time just looking at the hills and surrounding landscape. Judie also has goat-milk soap, moisturizer and, home-made jam for sale at a few bucks each. Just be aware that, if you're flying back somewhere, the jam is too big for airport security, so either eat it before you leave or ship it home to yourself. Lastly, there are nearby areas and paths to hike, but with a beautiful cabin and an inviting hot tub, why would you ever want to leave? :)

They moved here from some big city, deciding they wanted a more rural lifestyle and made it work - they have a great working farm with livestock and plants. If you go, you'll hear the stories from them themselves, which are great. Visiting this place is kind of like living on a real farm - you feed the goats your leftovers, can milk the goats, pick the fruit and veggies yourself, and feed the chickens. They have a dog named Katie that will hike with you anywhere you want to go. BTW, she will also kill any wild chipmunks that cross her path! I also loved reading the stories from other patrons as they have a book where you can write your own story of what you did while there, where you're from, etc. Highly recommended!

The lake nearby is Lake Glenviille which is incredible. They had a champayne cruise on the the lake and the next day evening drinks. They also served a full breakfast daily in the room. Clare and Henry gave us a map of hiking trails. They recommended Rainbow Falls and Whitewater Falls. Great hikes and even better scenery. This facility is well worth the 4 stars. He had never stayed in a place that did that for guests. It was always delicious and got us ready for a day of exploration. We went to the hospitality hour almost every day. Claire and my husband talked about craft beers and she was such a sweetheart to remember what kind of beers he enjoyed and had them at the next days hospitality hour. We took all of Claire and Henry's recommendations on things to do and good places to eat. Which included; the Champagne Cruise (lots of fun, Claire brought those delicious crackers she makes) different waterfalls to go see, and going to see the Biltmore in Asheville. Long story short we loved this bed and breakfast and if given the opportunity we would gladly go back. Thank you Claire and Henry!
