Like a lot of places in town, the menu was a little small. They had one type of omelet, an eggs benedict dish, one pancake dish, etc. I chose the "eggs my way" dish on both my visits, since I just wanted something basic and flexible. This came with a number of optional side for an extra cost: baked beans, spinach, roasted tomatoes, sausage or bacon. (Australian bacon is like a piece of Canadian bacon joined to a piece of american bacon - back bacon meets pork belly). We saw a lot of regulars here, with a few sitting in the same spots (I assume they get there early). Nice hometown feel, but that's true of a lot of places in Merimbula. A really nice spot, but not my favorite in town (that role is filled by Bar Beach Kiosk); Grading on the local curve, this one gets 4 stars.

Smitten enough that I decided to make it my first Yelp review on my work trip to Australia. One of the best parts for me was the short hike here (1.5 km) from town on a path through some beautiful shoreline forest. It totally made my morning to walk this secluded path both before and after breakfast. Speaking of breakfast, my baked egg dish, with tomatoes, cheese, beans and homemade toast was excellent. My coffee (a long black) was hot, fresh and strong. The vibe was friendly, upbeat, and very casual. Beach casual. Combine this with the beautiful setting, and Bar Beach Kiosk has became (for me) the ultimate breakfast spot in Merimbula when the weather was clear. The kiosk sits on a slope overlooking the inlet to the sea, with breakers in the distance and the beach in the foreground. It's just a 20 meter stroll down to the beach and another 30 m to a small boardwalk with scrambling access to the rocky point. Another path leads uphill to an overlook, then the local aquarium and pier. The kiosk building itself is very small, consisting of a compact kitchen and counter, so all seating is outside except for a partially-covered breakfast bar. Given that, it's not the best place to visit on a rainy day. On a beautiful sunny day, though, get there early if you can. The locals come here in droves, especially on weekends. I'm a big fan. I hope to be back a few more times before my trip is over.

We were greeted by the owners beautiful dog, then the owners themselves. They were warm and genuine. This little place has it all: hot meals, sandwiches, cakes, pies, sausage rolls, snacks, drinks, tea, coffee... not to mention locally made crafts. We had breakfast and it was well priced, not fancy, more home-cooked, but definitely in a good way. There's a few tables inside but if the weather is suitable, go to the deck out the back and enjoy the views over the gully. There's toilets available for customers, and sufficient parking out front. This is a common problem that we all face from time to time but luckily Willis Bakery is happy to take up the challenge for a mid morning breakfast. Where Watefront calls out for tourists to enjoy the view and the hum of humanity, Poppy's is more understated, relaxed, secluded. In a shady alleyway off the main strip, it was a good spot to drink coffee, grab a bite, and read a book; or have a quiet conversation. The menu here was small but excellent. On my first visit I enjoyed a delicious breakfast of fried eggs, local sausage, roasted tomato, homemade rye toast, and a rosti (hashbrown) made from potatoes and pumpkin. I was wishing the latter had more pumpkin flavor, but it was still a great meal. On my second visit I was in the mood for a light lunch and ordered their Asian-style salad with chicken, off the specials menu. It was delicious and fresh; and just what I wanted I enjoyed my meals (and the excellent coffee) at Poppies, but I have to say one of the best aspects was the seclusion. I've had good lunches here so far. My hamburger was fantastic; good beef on a quality, focacia-style bun. The Portuguese-style chicken sandwich special was also a hit; it was a popular repeat order with our small lunch group. In fact, we didn't try many other places in this town after discovering Evolve. Lots of locals stopping by here, and the staff seemed to know them all. It felt like a neighborhood haunt. If I was local I think I'd haunt this place myself.
