What a disappointment. We called ahead to see if all amenities were functioning and they said -…read moreabsolutely! We based our decision to stop off of that information. Even at check-in, they didn't mention any of this. Well, we get there and head to the grill because we were famished and ready for a burger, walk in and were told they only had one cook and they had a limited menu: chicken strips, wings and pizza. Not what we expected when the menu online had much more of a selection. It was basically a kids menu. So, we had no choice but order what they had. A corn dog, wings and chicken tenders. Gross, gross and gross. Undercooked corn dog, dry wings and processed chicken strips. The swim up bar was closed. The snack shack was closed. The slides were closed. Kids in the hot tub (which is clearly marked no one under 18 in the hot tub). One trash can for the whole area. Water was clean enough and drinks were okay, nothing special. Everyone was nice, but the person on the phone clearly should have told us what we were walking into. They put us in the spot right next to the playground area. We called and asked if the lights were on all night and how bright they were. Yes, on all night and no, not bright, was the answer. Good thing we requested to move because those lights were incredibly bright! Even from four spots down! Sunset was nice. Park is clean and maybe it's fun when they are at full capacity and everything is open and functioning, but it was less than stellar of an experience. Limited on pretty much everything. No maps with park info or anything. We tried to make the best of it, but not what we expected at all. Pretty bummed about the whole experience. Front desk needs to up their game and offer accurate information so campers know what to expect. Should've left when they said they didn't have any maps or info about the park.

They have good 30/50 amp service, cable and water. Back-in parking. Some sites are gravel / asphalt but they have several with new concrete pads and are adding more concrete pads. Gravel is well packed and easy enough to level up on. There is a circle turnaround at the far end. There are currently no pull-thru's. If you have a long rig (our 5th wheel is 42 feet) it can be very tight to turn around in the circle. So if that fits your rig, ask about an easier access site without having to use the turnaround. I was able to manage with a bit of patience. We backed our rig into a site on the south side which placed our doors and awning facing easterly which is great for being outside in the shade late afternoon and evening. Don't let the back-in situation scare you off. If quiet is what you seek, this is the place. The laundromat is clean and well cared for. Internet service is excellent. Outside our dining room windows we watched a horse and 2 donkeys graze. Definitely relaxing over a cup of coffee early in the morning. Corn fields on either side as this is a big agricultural area. Our dogs were welcome, must be on leash. Being located between two small towns, Bay City & Wharton, it definitely has a country feel and both towns are just minutes away. Bay City to the south is a bit bigger than Wharton it seems. They have a Wal-Mart and the usual comfort food restaurants plus a hospital / urgent care clinic. This little diamond in the rough is one we will definitely stop at in the future. 4 stars instead of 5 but they are still actively doing some updates and construction to the place. Can't wait to see it in the future. P.S. we visited two campgrounds in Wharton and one in Bay City. This one is off the beaten path, peaceful and priced reasonably. The other campgrounds don't cater to overnighter/short stay folks, charge too much, and the appearance of the long term camp trailers at those locations are less than pleasing to the eye. Not being snooty, just a fact.

I really don't get the negative reviews for this place. Yeah, it's not the Ritz but it's cute and…read morekitschy and the experience is everything I expected it to be. The teepee itself is fine. The bed was comfortable enough (a little small for two people but what do you expect from a teepee?!), there's a TV, couch, mini fridge, microwave, desk. That's pretty much everything you'd get from a more traditional hotel so I see no problem. The bathroom is small (again, teepee) and doesn't have a real door so I wouldn't recommend sharing a teepee with someone unless you're pretty damn comfortable with them. There is a vent in the bathroom so that makes matters a little better. It's really nice to walk outside in the morning, sit at the picnic table and read, listen to the traffic go by. What more could you really want from a small town Texas experience?! I love the story behind this place. I love that some locals won the lottery and reopened it. I love that it exists. Oh, and I love that they allow dogs! My pup thoroughly enjoyed her stay. We frolicked through the lovely open fields surrounding the row of teepees and reveled in the excitement of knowing we would be sleeping that night in a room shaped like a teepee. Thank you for being you, Teepee Motel and RV Park.

If you really want to try something different and pay little to nothing for a stay in Wharton, look…read moreno further. But first off a few things that you might want to consider before taking the jump to sleep at the Tee Pee Motel. Are you low maintenance? Because the hotel takes care of your basic needs: A bed, AC, and running water. My experience started off very naive since no one I knew had every stayed there before. My boyfriend went inside to pick up the room key. He had said that the lady told him that there wasn't running water and they wouldn't know when it would turn back on. They assumed that it would be a 2 hour wait. We took the room anyway because we had no place to stay for the evening. And frankly, the price was hard to pass. One night, 2 people was about $70. When walking in, we knew the space was small and it truly is just enough room for two people comfortably. All my photos are shot with a wide-angle lens so it appears a lot wider but in actuality the teepee is like the size of a dorm room. As we scoped around the place, we saw that the decor and the age old telephone were just elements of how these motel rooms were a part of a city's pastime. I was turned off by the idea of the water not working but it came right on about 30 minutes later. A lot shorter waiting time than we had expected. And the AC was great. It was so cold and running well on a warm Wharton day. In the bathroom, there were towels provided, a hair dryer, and a coffee machine with styrofoam cups, coffee grounds, and hand soap. No free bath wash or shampoo like the nice hotels. Or top of the line appliances. Honestly the appeal of staying here is lost once you spend the night. It's a small room with an outer wall that looks like a teepee. It's still a neat experience that I would only recommend to people who are comfortable sharing a bathroom at close proximity.
