This little trail is moderate/hard as it starts with a pretty intense incline but it gets better the more you walk. It's definitely a great work out and also has amazing views! The trail is kept very clean and has its own parking lot (which can get very packed in the late afternoon time) and they provide doggy poop bags, trash cans, and public restrooms. I didn't see the end of the trail but people said it's about 3 miles round trip. read more

I love having multiple options for hiking in the morning. Luckily Wilacre park is a great trail to take on. The initial uphill can be a challenge but after several runs you can take it on without any breaks. The loop is shy of 3miles, over looks parts of the valley and ends in a neighborhood. The loop can be completed within 50mins or less. It is recommend going early in the morning as the parking lot is small and it does get crowded. I do go at 6am on the weekdays were there are no issues but by the time I am done the parking lot starts to fill up. I probably would not come during the day time because of the parking situation but sometimes you can get lucky. This trail (also known as Fryman Canyon) is a good challenge for new hikers. If you start from the trail in the parking like you'll get a decent climb of about 400 feet within the first mile. Nothing too steep, but something that will get the heart rate going more than just a typical nature walk. There are two ways you can do this loop that starts and ends at the parking lot with the distance ranging from 2.5 - 3 miles. Once you're about 1.25 miles into the trail near where the incline stops you'll see a sign that says "Loop Trail" which will lead you back down, or you can continue down the path you're on going past the Tree People display/area and follow the trail out to Irednell Lane. This street will lead you to Fryman Rd which is right where the parking lot is. When you get to the street on Irednell Lane there is another trail that eventually connects to Gene Autry Ridge and a few other trails. You can easily see where else it leads to on the All Trails or Google Maps app. read more

It was a good trail. Pretty easy and straightforward. The views were great too. We met a couple gophers who were a little on the fence about our presence. Just keep your eyes open for rattlesnakes (apparently). The entire loop was about 2.8 miles from parking lot to parking lot. It took about an hour at a leisurely family walking pace. So if you're moving briskly or running expect to complete the entire circuit in under 45 minutes. Interestingly, a significant part of the trek takes place in a residential neighborhood. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. I wouldn't say it's the kind of place that you should go out of your way to visit if you're a seasoned hiker. But as a local, in the words of Steely Dan, once you go you may "go back, Jack, do it again." read more

I was looking for a place to put out my blanket and read a book and chill out in the lovely weather. I read that there was a picnic area here 5 minutes up. Because I saw people with dogs I decided to leave my stuff and just take some water to check out the scene (I wondered if they were picking up after the dogs. I didn't want a poopy picnic spot). So I walked up but must have missed the trail for the picnic area because before I knew it I was walking for an hour and ended up in a whole other park. But this was a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed the view and the inclines were not horrible (I did this in a dress and was very comfortable. I actually gave myself some cool points, watching people with walking sticks and camel backs while I was in a sundress and a half bottle of water ) I will absolutely return to this park. Maybe next time I'll find the picnic area. Oh, there was some people not picking up after there dogs but it was not horrible. Just kinda watch where you're walking and it will be fine. read more

Gorgeous views of hillside mansions and cute homes, lots of wildlife like birds, lizards, skunks, bunnies. Fresh flowers blooming, nice parking lot with bathrooms. The cons: soooo crowded. It's not a place to seek solitude. To get away from people, you have to take the secluded side trails. Tons of dog poop everywhere too, and if you're not a smoker be aware that a lot of people smoker pot/cigarettes on the trail openly. Still a nice hike to check out but not the best. read more

RE: LOCATION CONFUSION. It appears that some of the reviews under Fryman Canyon Park pertain to this trail since this trail is often called Fryman Canyon Trail which results in confusion. The address for this parking area is 3453 Fryman Road in Wilacre Park. Lovely hike with beautiful views. Easy and good for beginners. It is quite popular but if you want some peace and quiet, there is a little side trail that runs to the left of the main trail. If you use the AllTrails app, you can easily track it. Just a heads up, the trail ends in a residential neighborhood so you do have to walk a few blocks through the streets to get back to the parking lot. If you're not using AllTrails, you'll likely need to use some sort of map to guide you. The parking lot is a reasonable size but most of the spots were taken. I can see having trouble finding a spot during busy days/times. Very dog friendly. Once you reach the Tree People area, there is a little doggy fountain. I really appreciated how many garbage bins they had placed throughout the trail. It almost seemed like they were present every quarter mile. Yet, there were still bags of poop everywhere. I pick up garbage when I hike so I had my trash grabber with me. I picked up way too many of these baggies. C'mon people. If you're going to toss it, you might as well just leave the poop so it can biodegrade. Pick up after your dog AND throw it in the garbage! read more

It's a loop that brings you back to the parking lot which I appreciated, so it was easy to stay on the path and chat without wondering if we were going the right way. Saw lots of dogs! This path is definitely for any kind of hiker - it's a bit uphill at first, but nothing incredibly challenging. Would be a great spot to watch the sunrise! Appreciate having trails open during the pandemic to give us a break from the indoors! I assumed Wilacre Park would be relatively empty on a Friday morning during the pandemic but boy was I wrong. I arrived at 7:30 am and the parking lot was full. Luckily a few groups were leaving already. You will find several piles of doggy poop bags and trash cans overflowing with takeout containers. But otherwise I appreciate how well taken care of the parking lot and trail are. Wear your masks! No mask, no hike. read more

Not too far off from Ventura is this hiking ground tucked in between the mountains. Don't let the traffic in the parking lot scare you off. There are plenty of people coming in and out of the parking and you will get a place to park. The hike is just a little over 3 miles and it's a great way to get outdoors while in the city. It can be hilly in the beginning, but the trail smooths out in the middle and you end up in residential area. They allow dogs on-leash here. read more

I had come here previously at my boyfriend at the time now husband. We came back with our two pups and luckily it wasn't too crowded yet. A decent amount of people with their dogs on this hike. I got a new Fitbit for the new year, and had to keep up with my friend who averages 20K steps per day. Wilacre Park aka Fryman Canyon is the perfect place to hike and get some steps in. It's a pretty easy hike, and it took me about an hour to finish. I didn't take too many long rest stops. You get spectacular views of the valley, and fresh, crisp air. Great low intensity hike that is dog friendly. Took us about 45 min to complete the whole trail. Parking lot is slightly on the smaller side so make sure to come early. There is some street parking in the neighborhood nearby which is also an option. The trail isn't too crowded due to the limited parking available. Would recommend! read more

I'm so glad this place re-opened after the recent renovations. It's the closest hiking trail to me, so it's great to get it back into my life. The renovations? Parking lot is a bit bigger (I'm sure in some weekends, it'll still be hard to find a spot), it's free, they added nice restrooms, a major plus, water fountains and picnic tables. Loved the restrooms addition, nice idea, it comes in handy... The beginning of the trail is re-paved, and some picnic tables up at Tree People have been moved. Otherwise it's pretty much the same, which is fine by me. Nice, easy trail, love the views, missed them! Great place to go for a quick hike, take a moment, enjoy the view. read more

Great hike! I park on the Laurel canyon side and use it to bike to Coldwater canyon where the Tree People portion of the park is. This park is great for a hike with great view of the San Fernando valley. I also recommend it for a quick gravel or mountain bike ride. Since my friend introduced me to this oops ace a year ago it's been my go to for quick accessible hikes in la. Runyon is aCtually closer but with all the hAssle with finding parking you may actually dO yourself a favor by coming here. The park is linked to fryman canyon but this entrance is from the other side of Mulholland off laurel canyon just before Ventura Blvd jn studio city. As mentioned, they have parking which may, upon occasionn, be full but usually waitinng 5 minutes someone eventually leaves and frees up a spot. Another top, restrooms pretty clean for public toilets. Park and trails very dOg friendly and poop bags are even provided. Other pluses about this hhike- not as intense as Runyon- I would say only the first 15-20 minutes is the steeper uphill climb. The rest is generally level or downhill. It's goOd for providing an opportunity to get some cardio without being too hIgh intensity. Round trip roughly just uNder an hour. Part of the trail is shaded which is always a blessing. There are mini trails that shoot off from the main I in case you want variety. As with all good things, I want to keep it a secret but as an elite I feel it's my duty to share the gems of this world and city with others. Enjoy. read more

** 300th REVIEW ** The Valley tends to sometimes serve as a blackhole. Most residents can authenticate that when you live here, it is like you have reached the confines of the earth and can't leave. Going over the hill? Eh, too much traffic. Into Hollywood? Too many weirdos. So, as an avid hiker; I am very pleased to find a canyon hiking area near my apartment allowing me to stay in the Valley but also stretch my limbs. Located on Fryman Road (which is my opinion is one of the cutest, wooded areas of Laurel Canyon); the initial disconcerting factor is that the only provided parking lot is not only celebrity waist-sized teeny-tiny but it also costs $3. Most of the nearby streets are permit-only for local residents so you get stuck searching for some hidden street where you can park. But hey, this adds to your hike. Think of it as a warm-up! The hike begins with an immediate incline which starts pumping that heart rate so you are immediately thrown into the deep end of the pool. No baby steps here. However, it isn't too difficult and does flatten out after some time. The path is wide so it can accommodate larger groups and the scenery is not floral but very green and wooded. Plus, there are several lookout points to gather in the Valley basin and mountains in the background. Meaning, not only is Fryman a pleasant walk/hike but also provides a quiet and romantic spot for picnics. I can safely attest to this as my boyfriend surprised me with a lovely picnic on Valentine's Day at one of the lookout points. There is something about Fryman and Wilacre Park which soothes the soul. I have the stress level of a mouse about to be eaten by a snake and heath issues to boot but Fryman has serenity which calmed me down like chamomile tea. It may not be the most extensive hike but it is a great neighborhood, stress-relieving, increase-your-heartrate, romantic, canyon park. Another reason for me to not leave the Valley. read more

Better than Runyon. Yeah I said it. Fryman Canyon has slowly become one of my favorite hikes. Parking - FREE in the lot or street. The lot isn't that big so it fills up quickly. Hike - the loop is 3 miles. I try to do it twice for a total of 6 miles. If you start the hike entering through the park, you'll immediately be hit with a steep incline. The first .5 mile is like this. Hang in there, it's the hardest part. After that it's a gradual incline for another mile before the decline. The last mile (all downhill) of the hike is through a residential area. I've seen people start through the residential area and finish declining down the steep hill. Whatever your body prefers. Beautiful views all around. WAY less crowded than Runyon. A lot less pretentious too. You see people who are actually there to workout not to be seen. Ironically I've had more celeb spottings here than at Runyon. Dogs are allowed but they need to remain on leash. I love this place so please stay away! read more

This is a great hike and a refreshing break from Runyon Canyon. The park is well cared for, has parking for $3.00 in a lot or on the surrounding streets (be sure to check signs!) and all dogs are kept on a leash. The views aren't as great as some other trails, but the ease of the hike after the initial uphill climb is great and it's easy to get to from both the valley and mid-city. read more

Someone is looking out for me because I went by on a whim this morning with a friend and it just opened! I was so excited that I forgot to take pictures ... but I am sure to be back in the next few days and will remedy that! Here is the rundown on the renovations: Improved parking lot - newly paved, added spaces, some picnic tables, information posted re: history, flora, maps; new restrooms off to the side of the lot Trail - newly paved beginning of trail, which is a large improvement; trail overall is groomed, more trash cans added, brush and vegetation cleared So glad Fryman has reopened! I'm surprised I've never been here before. It was a fairly quick drive to get to Fryman Canyon and parking in the lot on a Sunday morning around 10:00 wasn't too difficult. I had maybe a 5-minute wait to snag a spot. It was much different on the way out around 11:15 where cars where lined up out the lot and around the corner to Laurel Canyon. The hike itself was fairly easy, with the toughest part at the beginning. It's not ideal hiking while wearing a mask, but I was happy to see everyone doing so. The views were very pretty and the traffic noise faded as the hike progressed. Lots of cute dogs along the way. The trail had a nice mix of shade and sun. The residential area at the end was lovely to walk through. A very pleasant way to spend an hour. read more

The Loop is a little tricky to understand your first time around. So you'll get to the top and there will be a gated mansion, beautiful view of the backyards. There is a small sign on the left that says "Loop Trial to Parking Lot" that is a short cut to where you started from Wilacre Park. If dismiss the sign and continue down the trail it will take you to Cold Water Canyon Trail, keep going down until you hit the bottom of the end of the park which is the neighborhood. My first time taking the trail was an awesome experience, Me and a friend who lives near the park got up early walked to the park, if you don't live close there's a parking lot you must use and pay a fee. I walk trails often the negative there's only one path to go on, some people riding bikes so it makes things a little tight, positives everyone up there is friendly and there's shortys up there so stay fresh on the deodorant lol! There were some nice morning views that day and my advice would to walk early or late because the sun could give you a nice sun burn. When I get the chance I would walk the trail again!! read more

Fryman Canyon is my favorite quick neighborhood hike. It's not difficult but the first part will get to you but stick with it. Once you get past the incline, the remainder of the three mile hike is manageable. Step up your pace if you want to get a decent workout or do a double loop. The hike drops you off into a neighborhood but if you're not up for that, you just turn around and work your way back to the trailhead. Perk of this hike is that it's never crowded. There are number of options for parking, you can park in the lot but if you're going at a popular time (i.e. 9am on the weekend), street parking on Laurel Canyon or Sunshine Terrace might be a better bet. read more

When first trying to find this hike on yelp I confused this with Franklin Canyon. I've always know this hike as Fryman, it's the nickname that most people call it. This hike it located on the corner of Laurel Canyon and Fryman. I have been hiking here for over 15 years. I like it because it's pretty easy going, has some nice scenery, it's dog friendly and it's never really deserted. Some days it gets lonely hiking all by myself and I enjoy seeing other people. There will never be a day here you won't see people. I have hiked in over 100 degree weather or in the rain and there is always someone up there. I feel like this hike is challenging, but mostly in the beginning where it starts off with a big hill. However it's not the hardest hike and if you are an advanced hiker this will be a pretty easy hike. But hey, you could always run it for a real challenge. Secondly, I like that it's dog friendly. There are four different spots for dogs to get water. I like that because they know the pups get thirsty too. Thirdly, I like the views, which are very pretty. There are views where you can see all over the valley. Also as I mentioned before this hike gets busy so I don't get that bored. It gives me time to people and dog watch when I'm in the mood. I enjoy hiking with other people but I don't get that opportunity all the time. Also there aren't too many trails to choose from compared to other hikes. They have parking in the lot for free! That is a new thing, it used to be $4 to park in the lot. However on a weekends that lot will be full so you can also park on Laurel Canyon before Fryman. On busy days you might have to park in the neighborhood before the park. There is no parking up Fryman and you have to had a permit to park on those streets or you will get a ticket. Dogs are welcome but unfortunately have to be on a leash. And the bathroom isn't too clean last time I used it there. I would rather pee in a bush, so bring toilet paper if you have a weak bladder! read more

It's been 3, maybe 4 years that I've been hiking here regularly. Like any good relationship, my love for Wilacre Park has gone through many phases. There was the rabid infatuation in the beginning, where I'd plan my entire week around the labored climb from one end of the trail to the other. Then I got pretty fit, and the trail and I started to get comfortable enough to create a longer loop, skipping the residential descent back to Laurel but turning back and taking the trail from the backway. (tee hee!) Pretty soon, that longer 3.6 mile route and I were so familiar, I could do it in 40 minutes flat. I grew resentful of those greenhorn trail hogs who'd get between me and my big, sweaty finish at the bottom of the hill. Well, as you can imagine, pretty soon I felt a little bored of Wilacre. I started driving a little further to Runyon on the sly, running to Magnolia Park, but I'd always find my way back to my main squeeze. These days, when you see me up at Wilacre Park, I might have a pretty serious look on my face.... But that's only because I'm pushing myself and listening to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJgGy2GNIg0&feature=youtube_gdata_player on my iPhone. There's basically no where else I'd rather be! Wilacre is great for novice hikers, just remember to yield to faster moving traffic & always stay on the right! The trail up here is better in the heat than anything in the area, it's got a ton of shade and it's impossible to get lost. It's also populated enough that I'd feel safe hiking anytime and any day, no mountain lion in his right mind would hang out here! That being said, every turn can contain a rattlesnake, so keep both your fur and your skin kids close by. read more

Very easy 3 mile hike that starts uphill and ends going downhill. The hike is located in Studio City on Laurel Canyon and Fryman Road. Park for free on Laurel Canyon, or pay $3 (cash only and exact change) in the lot. The trail begins going uphill for about 1.5 miles with views of the beautiful San Fernando Valley, and then the decline begins passing TreePeople's headquarters and Coldwater Canyon Park to the end of the dirt road into the neighborhood. From here you can turn around and trek back, or you can continue through the neighborhood and loop around. To get a good workout in, we did the loop twice which took around two hours. We started in Wilacre Park and looped around back to the parking lot. Then on our second round, we started through the neighborhood, which inclined on Iredell Lane. and then through the park. read more

I hike all over this city and this one is just A-OK because it's not the most scenic and the trails are so wide that it's also not very challenging. We also call it just 'Fryman' or 'Fryman Canyon'. The good parts are that it's so well monitored so you won't find a lot of trash or neglect. It's also very popular and last I was there (summer) they FINALLY got rid of their weird parking fee system which demands cash or ends in a steep ticket. They also close right on the hour and give another steep ticket if you're not out. So, obviously I haven't had great luck here either. I'd go if I'm in a hurry because it's close, but only in the winter or spring, because it's mostly desert terrain with a lot of people. I prefer more green, less people. read more

Good place to walk your dog, go for a jog, or go hiking! We went on the Betty B. Dearing Trail, which started right by the parking lot. It's not a strenuous hike. It starts off a little steep and switches back and forth. There is some dirt paths and paved paths. You see a lot of people walking their dogs and maybe a couple bikers. You get a nice view of the city as you go up. Lots of trees and green. Very calm and serene ambiance. I love how parts of the trail are shady and other parts were out in the sun. If you park in the lot, it's $3. Cash or coins only. FYI, if the machine is broken, there are envelopes for you to put your money into and drop off into one of their bins. read more

Fryman Canyon, Betty B. Dearing Trail, Wilacre Park, Dearing Mountain Trail Loop- this place goes by a number of different names; it's the P. Diddy of hiking trails. This is a short 3-mile loop located in the Hollywood Hills. This location is named after the former land owner and silent film star Will Acres and I'm sure he would be thrilled with the mash-up moniker. I consider this a not-quite-a-work-out hike. Don't get me wrong, it's a great place to jog or take a causal stroll, I'm just more interested in locations that have further distances and steeper elevation gains. What I do like about this location is that it does have some nice shaded areas with some scenic vista points and benches. It also provides access to the TreePeoples' Coldwater Canyon pavilion. They are a tree planting volunteer group. They have some interesting environmental-type of stations on display. The trail is 2.7 miles long. You can complete a 3 mile loop if you walk 0.7 miles down the residential streets. At the end of the trail you will encounter a cul-de-sac at the end of Iredell Lane. You can walk along the street in order to return to the trailhead. I have read that there is another trail that starts where Iredell Ln dead-ends. There's apparently a path that forks off the street which heads southeast. On the path there is a trapeze swing and a small creek. It ends on Mulholland, right at an overlook point. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail. It unfortunately costs $3 to park and there are no bathrooms. There's free parking and a bathroom at TreePeople's pavilion, at the north fork of Coldwater & Mulholland. read more

This does not make the list for favorite hikes. I was a little bit disappointed. I don't think it is worth doing unless you live you local. Total from start to finish it was 4.25 miles, keeping in mind that this one does not loop around. A few others were running/ jogging and I think this is a good option for this hike because the incline didn't seem too steep. This might be a great one to take kids on especially because: There is a cool little park half way through the hike. The park area is dedicated to teaching about water conservation etc. It has a couple cool posters with fun facts, I did not get a chance to read them. My favorite go-to hike in the area! 4 stars for convenience - right down the street, and parking is free now! Usually not horribly overwhelmed and busy (relatively speaking), except for weekend mornings. 3.5 stars for overall ambience. Nice view of the Valley and distant mountaintops (you can see all the snow on the San Bernardinos in the winter), pleasantly shaded areas throughout (making it doable even in the middle of summer), and most of the dog owners actually keep their dogs on a leash and don't let them run and bite people and crap all over the entire path like most LA dog owners (yes, I have issues, but legitimately so). 3 stars for the "hike" aspect of this. Not really crazy of a workout, and most of it is paved or very easy going; a bit of an incline but not too impressive. I usually have to wander around quite a bit on the side paths to make it more of a workout. Running shoes are just fine, no need for hiking or trail running shoes. At the end of the trail in Iredell Lane, there is a path on the right leading uphill that is paved with woodchips. It is a another trail in and of itself with its own little surprise that I will leave you to find out. Like someone else mentioned below, there is also another side trail leading up to the main trail from one of the cul-de-sacs down below. I haven't explored that path yet, but it is on my to-do list. You can also wander around the Tree People park to explore a little more too. Also, during the day be prepared to see several LARGE rattlesnakes sunning themselves on the path.
