I was very much looking forward to a relaxing massage while in New Zealand. Through online research I saw advertisements for Polynesian spas, heated pools, therapeutic massages, etc. I had to really read to distinguish between a therapy massage and more of an activity type of spa.
I settled on the Maori healing massage because the reviews were good and the website boasted about its healing principles through the Maori culture so I believed I was in for a tea treat purchasing the combo of Romiromi & Mirimiri. This service was supposed to last 75 minutes, it only lasted 60.
It was at a placed called the Royal Palms Spa Resort, sounds relaxing right? It's not. It looks more like a motel and the spa rents rooms to do their services in. The woman that worked on me was incredibly sweet and she explained to me that this was a spiritual experience as well as body work so all of that matched with the website so far.
She prayed over me in the Maorian language and then began body work. If you've ever had Airrosti therapy in the states, it reminded me a little of that. It's not relaxing, it's more about triggering pressure points for release. I'm all for that and appreciated the body work given the long flight but I would've incorporated more massage into the practice. This was not bad, it's just not what I pictured at all. I thought I would be at a relaxing building overlooking the lake with a massage/spiritual procedure being performed but that's not exactly what occurred. I wouldn't do it again, consider the source for the online reviews I guess. I've had loads of massages at some of the best spas in the world, this is not one of them. read more
