Just don't expect anything too glam. Or well done. But it's a bit of fun. Nice slush puppies. To be fair if your 12-16 and looking for a hangout with your mates, a bit of "neckin' in the corner" and some naff dance tunes, it's perfect. I think me and Vikki C made a mistake (mainly me) envisioning a 'GoldMember' stylee rollerdisco, you know.. with other adults.. I think it was a fundraising night so the entertainment they had on was local, and the Live Bands were about 15-16 however we DID have a huge giggle whilst there. A HUGE roller rink! Suffice to say can hold 200 or more people easily! As a new roller derby recruit, learning to skate is on my priorities and with a lack of roller rinks in Manchester, I found this place online after a desperate search. However, my birthday was rapidly coming up and whilst looking on their website I saw that Wigan Roller Rink had a private hire party page... I rang and left a message in the evening and they replied the next morning (fast!) which I was pleasantly surprised about. They gave me lots of information about the facility - I didn't realise that it wouldn't be completely private hire (i.e. not including the rink). They explained that the rink was usually open every week from Wednesday - Sunday and it attracts 200-300 people on a Saturday night (when I was planning the party) so it would be impossible to hire out the full rink. The lovely woman then went on to explain what was on offer; a room behind the bar (the bar situated through a door next to the rink) where they could offer to cater a buffet for us or where we could bring our own food! AND it was on £20 to hire the room! To enter the rink in the evenings is £4 entry and if you need skates £2 hire. The afternoons are cheaper for entry. If you're scared of landing funny, a deposit of £5 can be given for wrist guards/pads which you will receive a raffle ticket. When you're done, take them back with your raffle ticket and receive your £5 back :) Like I said at the beginning, the rink is HUGE! There may be a lot of people in there but you'll have plenty of space to skate :) There's also a skate shop on-site that's open all night! It has a big selection - I purchased some wheels and they're fantastic, the guy selling knows what he's talking about too! Aside from the bar room (over 18's only) they also have a food area, with table and chairs and a food bar - this serves burgers, hot dogs, confectionary, drinks and all sorts. The bar also has a pool table for something a little different. Don't be afraid about you belongings - there are lockers available around the rink for £1. You can re-open your locker at any point and the locker hire doesn't end until 4 hours later (in which you're covered for the full evening session from 7pm-11pm). Well Amy W came across the website for this place and a very exciting looking poster caught our eye - Special Event - Circus Night! Live music, DJs, Clowns, Raffles, Fire performers etc - sounded and looked pretty cool.... we thought.... Now I wasn't expecting anything too glamorous or exciting, I was imagining a bit of a cheesy wedding style DJ, maybe a band doing rock n roll covers, and mostly older teens and adults (The circus theme had been running all day with too early sessions so assumed it would be an older crowd from 7-11pm) We arrived about 10 mins early keen to get out skates on. We walked in to what looked like a kids party, feeling a bit awkward we went outside to watch the 'fire performer' until the 7pm session started. So he could swallow fire and twist a stick about but a bit of interaction with the small crowd outside or a bit of music couldn't have hurt. Once the session finally opened, we booted up and headed to the dance floor. The music was terrible, I think they had the same CD on in the place I used to skate when I was in school, bwitched, five and atomic kitten.......seriously! I'm surprised the evening session was still aimed so much at the children. The CD was turned off after about half an hour and instead we have a children's entertainer trying to get a young boy to juggle on the stage. I really felt as though we were gate-crashing a children's party. Put the CD on again please?! We grabbed a cheese toastie, had another quick skate while a couple of sixth formers played their songs and left. On the good side of things the staff were very friendly and the money raised was going to a good cause. I feel they could have made a bit more of what the night was all about and why they were raising money as the only reason I knew was a poster on the wall. Maybe they did this after we left.... If I had have been younger I would have loved this place, however for a 20 something year old the night was a bit of a disaster. We thought we would have a laugh and we were right but maybe for the wrong reasons. read more
