Alexandre Park This place was a big part of my early…read morechildhood, and was built in 1861. We use to go with family, friends or alone to play on the swings, chase geese, feed ducks and climb the various monuments around the place. This park is very close to the city centre, and has a lot of places for you to sit, enjoy the weather or just walk around. The huge greenhouse has been around since before I was born and is great if you're botanical! There's places to swing, slide and twirl the little ones. The boathouse is still there, but converted into a coffee shop, which has a decent array of sandwiches, drinks, pastries and ice creams. Although it has shrank in size, and there's a few places still closed off and under repairs, it's still a great park in the heart of Oldham where you can relax and take in beautiful surroundings.

I grew up here and have fond memories so it's nice to see the park has not gone to tatters like most of Oldham has over the years. There are some real beautiful authentic Victorian fixtures like the bridge and gazebo stage thingamajig. There's also what looks like a mini Japanese tea garden section that's lovely to take pictures in and read about the history of the park. I'm yet to try the boat rides and Boathouse cafe, but there are so many lovely spots to have a picnic or gaze into the water. My young nephews love playing badminton and frisbee here so it is a great place to bring the kids for a day out to burn off some energy. They also have a nice play park with a sandpit and some (challenging) climbing and swinging structures (difficult for an old codge like me!) The greenhouse isn't usually open when I am here, but I love the house and garden behind it. It's nice that they have a free parking lot too, hope it stays that way! Definitely a "Thing To Do" if you're visiting or reside in Oldham, UK.

There are playgrounds for younger & older children, while not very big I don't think the park was kitted out with the mind set of visitors from out of the area. Tennis Courts with static steel netting in place of traditional netting (unfortunately the park is situated in a council estate and the local kids in the past have had no respect or stuff that is put into the park for their enjoyment) Basketball courts. Rugby & football playing fields and open areas for walking dogs.

Queen's Park was somewhere my family used to head to on occasion throughout my childhood. There was…read morea time a good few years ago when it fell into a serious state of disrepair and neglect and was no longer family-friendly, but after a sizeable injection of lottery funding and refurbishment it went on to win the national 'People's Choice Green Flag Park' award in 2010 and has held 'the Flag' each year since then. The park is Grade II listed and still has some of the original buildings and structures from the 1870s including the Lodge House and Victoria Fountain. It was presented to the people of Heywood by Queen Victoria in 1879. The green spaces are well maintained and there are plenty of pathways to wander along. It's probably in need of a little TLC in some parts, especially around the Boating Lake, but the vast majority of the amenities are being looked after. Speaking of which, there are plenty of things for families to do here, from the tennis courts (they're on asphalt), children's play areas, crown green bowling greens, outdoor gym and café. There's also a large BMX course which had been constructed in the last couple of years next to Heywood Cricket Club. Tip: there is a large free car park opposite the Park on Queen's Park Road.

First-Hand Experience: I saw Oldham play Rochdale live once, and I've seen Oldham play away from home too. My friend Alex and I came here and saw a few other games here and there in the MCR area. I have no affinity with Oldham and watching them was nice, but not one of my favourite experiences. I still really respect them though and they get a 3. This is the listing for the football club, not for the stadium. I've created a new listing for the stadium and hopefully those reviews that are just for the stadium will be moved over there. Every team and stadium should have their own separate listings as all the North American teams do and a lot of the British ones. This is one of the many great teams in the Manchester area, which is where I used to live. It's perhaps my least favourite of the smaller teams in this area even though they were a Premier League club (so to speak - it was called Division One then) back in the 1980s, with their legendary player Andy Ritchie and their legendary manager Joe Royle. Formed in 1895 as Pine Villa, which is like Aston Villa only in a forest. Known as the Latics because their movement is static and their history a little pathetic (jk), they play in awful blue, but I have to say that even though Paul Scholes is a fan (ew), Michelle Marsh is too (ooh) so that's a score for them. They were knocked out of the FA Cup in the Semi Finals by local rivals Man United, twice in 90 and 94. Boo. They were league runners up in 1915.

Went here last weekend to see Oldham Athletic in FA Cup action. I had been warned by football…read morefriends to avoid this place and instead go see Bolton Wanderers of FC United instead. I heard it was the colest stadium in England and that was enough of a reason to go - try something different. I was disappointed that the bitter cold winds weren't whipping off of the Penine hills, which you can see from the stadium since a few years ago one of the longer stands was torn down only for the team bosses to later realize that they have no money to build a new one! This makes it unique. I was alone at the game so struck up a conversation with a couple fans and we sat together, had a couple beers together and I got to learn some Oldam team history. There were meat pies (but didn't have any) and other basic food, so you don't have to leave hungry. There was also a nice fan shop where I bought the team's 3rd shirt, which is orange, for 10 pounds. A nice souvenir, I think. For an interesting football experience, I highly recommend Boundary Park.

This is a fantastic local swimming pool. They hold public swimming sessions and also run swimming…read moreclubs there. My daughter has attended Aqua Bears swimming club held there for over two years on a Saturday morning. There are swimming classes for young beginners, right up to the more experienced swimmers. I have also attended classes for pregnant mums, which were a good way to meet new friends. Importantly the changing rooms are clean and in good repair; the toilets have been recently refurbished. There is a free car park attached and there is usually attendants who are very helpful. I can thoroughly recommend this swimming pool.
