There are two spans here, with the upriver (westbound) being the Cass Street Bridge and the downriver (eastbound) is the Cameron Avenue Bridge. They connect downtown La Crosse with Barron Island. It is only when you are on the La Crosse West Channel Bridge and you go from Barron Island to cross into La Crescent Minnesota. The Cass Street Bridge (the one that I drove heading west) opened in 1939 and replaced a swing bridge that was damaged in 1935. It is a cantilever bridge 17 panel rivet-connected warren through truss with a a total length of 2532 feet and a width of 30 feet. There is 67 feet of clearance below to the Mississippi. It is paired with the Cameron Avenue bridge that is more modern and opened in 2004. If you're here, do check out the deck truss approach spans which are curved. Another interesting feature is the stairways that are midway along the approach spans at each end of the bridge and allow pedestrians to climb up to the bridge sidewalk. The western stairway includes a crossover stairway that passes under the deck truss allowing pedestrians to switch which sidewalk they are walking on without walking across the roadway. Yes, the Mississippi starts somewhere up not too far north from here in Minnesota at Lake Itasca and flows south to New Orleans. This is where the east meets the west in the north. This bridge carries Interstate 90 and joins La Crosse Wisconsin to Dresbach Minnesota. It was fully opened to traffic in October 2016, replacing a previous 1967 plate girder bridge. The bridge consists of a pair of parallel, concrete box girder structures over the main river channel and precast concrete girder structures over the back channels. The bridge has two lanes in each direction and includes 18 feet of shoulders inside and outside. The bridge is rather boring with few features or accoutrements but it gets the job done. There is no toll in either direction. The building itself is amazing, tall ceilings, open floor plan, etc. I would not suggest it for anyone with any kind of mobility issues as the staircase to the bedrooms is quite steep. It was unclear on the website, that the two bedrooms are located in the basement, which is quite damp and musty (as expected of a basement.) It feels like someone had a great idea to turn this into an Air BnB, but put no effort into the final product. It was not only dirty and dusty, there were basic amenities missing, like complete sheet sets on the beds and toilets that work correctly. When asked about the sheet situation (no top sheets on any beds) the owner made a joke about how silly we were, the duvets are the top sheets.... Am I missing something? I have a duvet, a duvet cover, and a fitted and flat sheet set on my bed, isn't that standard? Besides, neither of the twin beds even had duvet covers on them, just old blankets and an old quilt. My theory is all of the bedding was donated by friends and family and is all just mismatched hand me downs of threadbare linens. The downstairs bathroom had a toilet seat that moved when you sat on it, everyone knows what I'm talking about, the kind that makes you feel like you're going to fall off when you first sit down because it moves suddenly to the side. Tried to tighten the plastic screw below, but I think it was missing. Then the flusher was tricky, it didn't seem attached tightly enough. the handle finally just fell off so we couldn't flush until we got into the tank to fix it ourselves. Unfortunately there was a plastic nut missing from inside the tank so we just had to leave the tank lid off to flush the toilet. The shower had great temperature and pressure, it was just unfortunate that it pointed sideways just past your head, and was probably a 40 year old shower head that was not adjustable. I suppose the shape and location of the shower necessitated the sprayer direction, but a handheld sprayer would've made it so much better. Overall, it was just a very dusty, dingey, musty place. Even the curtains are hung backwards. The pictures of the outside area on the website are not accurate. The patio table and chairs were about 20 yards from the house and were covered in leaves, and you had to walk across a yard of muddy earth covered with rotting black walnuts, not easily traversed for anyone with mobility issues. The BBQ is a mini Weber. This could be such a fun, cool place to stay and wouldn't take much to make it that way, but I don't think there's been much effort since the initial opening 23 years ago. This is a good reminder that you can't always trust what you see and read in advertising and brochures, up close and personal can be a completely different experience. I think this would be a great place for a large group with a lot of kids, but not so much for people who enjoy their comfort away from home.

They even stored our bikes up front and let us pre board to get them loaded before seating was called. Fun staffers escorted us and bs'd for a minute. Ticket checkers were cherry and it all felt like black and white movie. Stops were quick and efficient. Ride was smooth and quiet. The observation car was stunning while the light lasted and gave a good destination for twitchy legs. Snack and bar cart downstairs did us right too. Cost effective and a solid alternative to flying or driving.

A beautiful walking path along the river, with plenty of benches to sit on to enjoy the view. There are boat tours daily during the warm months (beginning in May) and currently there are some "Hear Here" tours that were fun to listen to - call a number, plug in the location number and story number, and hear someone tell a story about that location. I don't know if this is always around, but as an out-of-towner it was fun to listen! As you stroll along you will eventually come to the Friendship Gardens - a beautifully put-together space of gardens inspired by different countries (and sister cities of La Crosse). It was such a nice place to quietly walk through and enjoy the flowers and sculptures. They had many sculptures that included flowing water - unfortunately at the time I was there none of them were running. I bet they are so beautiful when they are!

I took many more photos than what I posted because you really have to see the collection in person. They really have some special gems including a Subaru model that only 209 of were manufactured in 2019, so super rare. I consider this a must-visit when in La Crosse whether you are a car enthusiast or not!

The best museum in La Crosse and like best auto museum in Wisconsin…read more The downtown museum is in an optimum location with free and easy parking right on the street in front of the museum. Adults $5 with seniors even less. The cars are packed into the location but visitors can access each car with360 Degree clearance so you can see the from every angle. The age of this collection goes all the way back to 1909 up to 2016 and each car is pristinely restored and maintained. Displays for each vehicles gives year, model, and model specs as well as cultural details relevant to its time. Really interesting! They capture the not only the timeline of the dealership since its founding, but aspects of La Crosse's specific history, the auto industry as a whole, and America's culture. The hood ornament collection and the gas pump illuminated signs really complement the value of this museum. All of this is accomplished by adding great graphics and neon to pull it all together. My only wish is that the building was even bigger to hold them and grow this magnificent collection. I am not knowledgeable about cars, but this museum was a delight even for people like me. I would guess about 40-50 cars and trucks are on display. Many convertibles! I spent about 2 hours here appreciating this beautifully curated collection. Oh, the space can also be rented for corporate functions and small weddings, too! Finally, It is never packed so it is easy to enjoy time here without having to fight your way through a crowd. Don't miss it. It is worth a special trip to the city just for this museum on a rainy day.

Plus I hear they're renovating their top floors to add in studio space for local artists. Not to mention their great mix of programming from new release to family favorites and some cult fare.
