Honestly, the whole reason why I wanted to come was the world's largest indoor carousel. It is beautiful. I definitely sat there for awhile watching it. Side note on the Carousel, they have no horses but they do have a bulldog and as a owner of a bulldog, I literally bought everything in the gift shop that had a bulldog on it. Till this day, they are still uncovering more items in storage lockers so they probably will continue to add more items. I do think this place is worth the price and it is something you won't find anywhere else. I would love to check this place out again and I do highly recommend it. Also, the gift shop is big and had a lot of different items for everyone.

It will take you about an hour to check everything out, maybe a bit more if you do the scavenger hunt, which I did alongside my kiddo. The interactive exhibits were great as well, and they do a great job of teaching you about environmental issues plaguing our water systems and use art to do it in a way that conveys a great message. We arrived about an hour before closing and despite having to visit at a fast clip, I'm so glad we added this to our agenda. Most of the rooms contain visiting exhibits, and my favorites this time included the up-cycled plastic art and the large canvas from the 19th century depicting whaling that is visiting. If you're in Winona, this museum is a must-add to your places to visit list!

This is a small one-room museum on Main Street, which opened in Nov. 2020. (Don't go to the address…read moreon West Street unless you're planning to do research in the archives.) $5 is a bit steep, though perhaps I was spoiled by an excellent museum I'd visited earlier today for the same price. There is a collection of buttons from Oktoberfest, with two costumes from the 1960s; a small but interesting exhibit on the Ho-Chunk (Hoocak), which focused on arts and crafts; some artifacts from the War Eagle shipwreck (the only underwater location on the National Register of Historic Places that I'm aware of), and a few other odds and ends, including an exhibit on "pearl" buttons made from shells, a "combination" a lady would wear under her corset (they were made locally), and a few Hmong items, including a beautiful detailed aluminum necklace. I didn't really come away feeling I'd learned about the history of La Crosse, but this certainly painted in some details.
