I love WHYY, but when I signed up for Passport it took 6 days (!?) to activate. A century in this digital age. When I called to get information about when I should receive it, i discov that membership "services" is only open 9-2. I guess they think all their subscribers are independently wealthy or retired! Anyway, when I called back to the central switchboard, they sent me without a word ba k to member services--which they clearly knew, or should have known, was closed. When I called bac to ask who I could talk to, they let it ring for about min before hang up. Takeaways: don't expect you passport to go through until it's convenient for them, don't expect to be able to get member services unless you are free during work hours, don't expect service from member "services." read more

It was great to get some NPR through Central New Jersey when my radio this morning landed on WHYY. Headlines and BBC World Service as I drove around on my way to the library was helpful. It's Philadelphia's NPR radio outpost so the personalities are prone to emote in whispers and overly articulated diction but whether you agree or not with their politics the programs are always interesting and extremely well produced. If you have to drown in empathy, it helps that it's barely audible. You might not think that a fifteen minute immersion in the origins of Mahjong or the gestation of the Cicadas is compelling radio but strangely enough, it works. Compared to the homogenized playlists and formats of a dying terrestrial radio, WHYY is addictive and sticky. So, while their politics can become a one note chorus, the pleasure in listening is always to understand both sides of an issue. I guess I'm a fan, even when they speak in erudite whispers ala Niles Crane. Quiet down, they're about to go off on a fifteen minute jag on the origins of the Victrola. I'll be listening. (This is only about the WHYY Vehicle Donation Program) Even though I don't live in the WHYY market per se I do listen several times a week to things like Fresh Air, Radio Times and Morning Edition all of which are excellent/intelligent programming. So when we had a very old vehicle to dispose of I somehow remembered seeing on their site that they accept vehicle donations which are processed by a 3rd party company to an auto auction to get the station of few extra bucks and to me, the satisfaction of helping them out. I'll start by saying that in the future if I decide to dispose of another vehicle, it will not be via WHYY as more or less what they have on their website regarding this program while I suppose idealistic is not how it played it out for me. Initially I filled out all of the documents on line and because I'm not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV, I called the 800# number listed on their site to ask specific questions about how the title needed to be filled out/notarized so that it could be done right the first time. I wrote down the instructions and to the letter of the law of what I was told executed the instructions. Of course, the title/paperwork gets kicked back from the 3rd party company in RI who handles the transaction as being done wrong even though I assume the 800# is probably their number in the first place? So, after waiting weeks to get everything sent back I had to go back to the notary and pay a second fee to have it done now the "correct" way. I wasn't around for the vehicle pick up so I have no idea as to how that went. The other issue involves WHYY's benefits to the person donating. When you do this the station makes you a member and is supposed to send you a membership card good for a year which gets you a discounts (most miniscule but there are some BOGO ones as well) at various area attractions & restaurants. We made the donation at the end of September and the discount card just showed up this past week after nearly six months. Now naturally you would think that the date would be a year from March since that's when I received the card except the card is dated from September which of course negates half of the time period/value of the card. So between taking six months to put an envelope in the mail and then having to pay a second notary fee because the advice I received from WHYY's agent for this program was initially incorrect, why would I do this again? read more

We held an event here and the space was pretty great. The non profit had great prices and included all the AV (includes all tv screens to post whatever you wanted on there). We used the whole bottom floor although there were areas where others (prob worked at the radio station) could walk through but no one noticed. They have so much AV- but it's prob because of all the broadcasting. Went very smoothly! read more

WHYY has done a few interviews on me and I'd have to say that the woman that came out was kind and she came into a very bad neighborhood just to interview me and I think that that took a lot of a warrior spirit to do something like that even as we were talking and being interviewed she was hearing gunshots and things like that but we kept going and the same place has spoken to me about what's going on right now in my life because they've done so many interviews on me for different things that I typically know them and can call them and say I have a story is there anyway this would be good for you to post especially on one of your morning shows or the radio shows, and they always say I always have something good to give them now what I'm going through right now if I were to do that there would be a place that would lose their whole business and on top of that there would be a woman that's going to lose her job that works for the government if I told them the secrets that she does and there would be a woman that would probably be putting Jail for all the child abuse she did read more

On November 2, 2011 I gave a $150 donation for the 3 Steps to Incredible Health with the understanding that I would receive the items in 4-6 weeks, which should have been mid December and now here we are heading towards the end of December and I still haven't received the items, nor have I ever received an email regarding the pledge or phone call for that matter. My complaint is simply when you order from any other business, you get some type of acknowledgement and when there's an issue with your order you're given a heads up, so why aren't I given the same courtesy from WHYY? Poor service WHYY, I don't think I'll be giving support in the future, if this is how you do business... read more

I had the experience of volunteering at WHYY TV a few times. The most recent time involved a fundraising project. WHYY had a staff member there to make sure that the volunteers were taken care of. We had a private space to chat and they kept us informed of what was going on. Before we began filming, we got a mini-tour of the area and we were shown the bathroom and water fountain locations. We had a short training lesson on how to take pledges and input the info into the computer. The system was simple to use. I also served as an intern at WHYY's Applause Magazine. The organization took an interest in my perspective. Because they are a nonprofit with limited budget, I was actually utilized as an entry-level worker in the publishing industry rather than as a coffee-getter. The staff were super helpful in providing information about the city and how to get around while I was still learning my way. I really had a full behind-the-scenes view of the company and also received a full tour of the establishment. I really gained a full understanding of magazine publication without having to have the "Devil in Prada" experience typically received in New York. WHYY is an asset to Philadelphia. Their eco-friendly, high-tech building utilizes space well. Employees seem to understand what they're doing and why their jobs are integral. Money isn't wasted here and employees and volunteers are seriously appreciated. WHYY's TV and radio stations really provide an open-minded alternative to the nearby FOX News affiliate station. Now that I am very familiar with Philadelphia, I'd say that WHYY accurately represents and promotes local culture and activities. read more

By far my favorite radio station, and I've been lucky enough to come here for different events twice. First checked out the studios for an event with Rabia Choudry, talking about the podcast Serial and the case of Adnan, then was back last night for a story slam co-sponsored by American College of Physicians. The studio is nice and open, and the room in the back is plain, but great for events. Each that I've attended were cheap, around $10 a ticket. Looking forward to checking out more cool stuff going on here! read more

I couldn't get my Real Player on my mac to work properly, so I sent a short but detailed note to WHYY customer service asking what to do with a file that was downloaded from their site, only to receive the following replly: Thank you for contacting WHYY with your question. The information you are receiving has nothing to do with WHYY. You are receiving information boxes based on the settings of your computer. You need to make the decision on how to proceed, not WHYY. That's it. If they think this is customer service, then they better think again. I wish I could give 'em no stars. Jerks. read more

I would give WHYY 5 stars if they didn't constantly air funding raising events. If they were to look around in the marketplace, it would now make sense to run commericals. Other public service stations do, the one in allentown does as does njtv. Having a 5-7 minute pitch every 15 mins is a pain. They should do them at the begining of the show & then at the end. Just the way radio stations do. That way they could use neilsen to increase their rates. Since washington saw fit to cut 90% of their funding i have been waitting to see if they would yield to a conventional broadcast format & i think now is the time to do it. Economics force it. Is it right, no...but that in my opinion would be less offensive than the constant sales pitches. read more

I don't always have time to read the Inquirer each day, so I depend on WHYY Radio (90.9 FM) to give me news, NPR, and things to consider throughout my days quite often. As compared to other cities' radio news sources, WHYY is really balanced (in my opinion), and even in their local talk shows (I love the 10-12 interview segments), they always answer to both sides. You also get Fresh Air, News & Notes, Business Review, and other NPR programs that I've grown addicted to. I truly think amidst a decaying age of media news, I couldn't live without WHYY (and when I'm out of town, I stream on the Internets sometimes), because they give me all that I want, nothing I don't. The station used to be much better when they had more music programs. Now the music programming is very light. Also they repeat programs way too much. Especially on the weekends, when Garrison K. rules the waves. I used to financially support ALL of the public radio stations in Philly, but now I supplement my "live" listening with NPR webstreams of the programs I like; both music and news. read more

I want to talk about the situation with part of the building collapsing on Lindley ave and the red cross supposed to be helping us but they chose to help a few families and the rest may get displaced with our animals and belongings that we could get & the rest my be getting stolen because the door's was knocked in our rent was paid faithfully each month & my family getting treated like we owe money & we was in our own comfortable space & management not doing anything but making excuses & my anxiety& depression is going haywire i don't kno what to but ready to give up completely than maybe the ppl who really need the help gets it seeing someone has to end they life to realize that the ppl get the help ppl really need. They have us at the high school making it seem like they really helping like it was our fault this has happened to us smh. WHYY and NPR push the Liberal agenda with partial funding by taxpayers. Rarely are both sides of most topics presented. New construction was financed from DRPA funds from Gov. Rendell. How can one expect an equal balance of an issue with major sponsorship from liberal politicians? I am happy WHYY conducts fundraisers by soliciting members but how many of those members realize over $1-Million in compensation is being paid to 3 of its employees. My organization, Freedom Center for Wildlife, Inc., just tonight volunteered to take pledges during the WHYY campaign. Everyone was nervous and excited, but we all had the best time! We learned so much just by observing all the details that go into producing a show, and were taken very good care of . All of us have decided that if we are asked again, we will go happily! We were put at ease right away, had all of our questions answered, got to speak with many of the tv personalities that host the programs, and spoke on the phone with so many people concerned that public television is suffering from the economical climate.
