WH Smith seems to be taking on the baton passed by the floundering ship Woolies, what with its confused collection of products: yes there are the expected ranks of newspapers, mags and books to work through on your train, plane or automobile journey, but now the shops also sell all sorts of foodstuffs and other travel accessories. They also have an annoying system of tempting me to buy silly newspapers just so I can have a 4-kilo Dairy Milk bar for free, and other such pointless offers. Having ranted all that, I suppose I should enjoy WH Smith while I can, as a colleague in the know told me yesterday that it's parent company is in deep trouble and the brand is not expected not to last beyond next year. read more
