Greenwich Book Time is a real gem specialising in selling remainder books at knock down prices. Locals may remember this place as "the £2 bookshop" but since its takeover a number of the titles have increased in price. Nevertheless, there are still bargains to be had as many of the books still retail at full price in the High Street chains. They stock everything from keep fit books to cookery books, celebrity biographies, children's books and classic fiction. The only downside is that their stock levels are inconsistent and there is no guarantee that if you see a title for sale one week that it'll be there again the next. They are also unable to order specific books in if you require them and they also do not accept National Book Tokens or credit/debit cards. This shop trades in CASH ONLY. Don't worry if yo have forgotten your card as there is a cashpoint in the bank next door. Being a small shop it does tend to get a little overcrowded easily, especially when they put a clearance table in the middle of the floor but don't give up on it. Hustling and bustling your way around the shop to see the full selection can be of benefit to you as you are bound to spy titles that at such a low price become irresistible purchases and you can easily leave with an armful of books for under a tenner. If crowded shops aren't your thing then it is possible to browse later in the evening where you can pretty much roam the shelves undisturbed. The shop serves another somewhat cheeky purpose. They also sell greetings cards (most of which are blank) and gorgeous wrapping paper and makes an ideal stop off if you've forgotten to buy someone a card or gift. Other items that are stocked include calenders, note books, postcards, address books and a small selection of games and puzzles. Greenwich Book Time is a 3 minute walk from Greenwich Railway/DLR station and Cutty Sark DLR Station. Parking outside the shop is impossible as directly outside is a bus lane monitored by cameras. Car parking is available in surrounding roads although they are all either residents parking permit spaces or on a meter. Car parks are also within walking distance but if it's a flying visit you're making then short term free parking (1 hour) is available by Maze Hill station on the opposite side of the town which is around a 10 minute walk away but gives you a great opportunity to check out Greenwich Park en route to the shop. read more

This is one of those clever shops that doesn't pick up second hand books, but rejects from publishers. This means that they'll have a spelling mistake on page 214 or something. Bonus for us as we pick them up for £2! wahey! Some of the stuff in here is rubbish. But I've also picked up some great bargains. Such as a Katharine Hepburn biography which is one of the best things I've ever read. A copy of Birthday Letters by Ted Hughes which started a bit of an obsession with him. That said, I've picked up some tat too. There are some books I'm drawn into buying that I've never read. They look great on my bookshelf though. But it's £2. If you don't like the book, you haven't really lost anything. And it's great for getting random presents for people. Three books makes you look very generous indeed when really, you were being a bit cheap. read more

The shop used to be lovely but has gone majorly downhill over the past year. I live locally so often pop in whilst passing by just to waste some time and have a little look round. The staff that work on the shop floor are lovely but the current "manager" is an absolute joke. He is often shouting at the staff and being very offensive towards them. I overheard him make remarks a while back about hiring a new person but not to hire anyone "foreign because they are lazy", despite him being 'foreign' himself. He often makes jokes about his staff being 'fat', 'lazy' and 'stupid'. The way he speaks about staff is revolting and spiteful so God only knows what he says about the customers. The language he uses whilst talking is very inappropriate for use in a family bookshop with young children. The stock in the shop used to be wonderful but it is now just the same stuff all the time. There barely ever seems to be new stock and when there is, the boxes are left in the shop for days. I asked one of the girls why there had been boxes in there for 3 days to be told that they aren't allowed to open or unpack the boxes without the manager going through them first. What is the point of this?! If that is the case then surely he should be in Monday-Friday on a regular basis? The shop used to be lovely and vibrant but now seems as if there is a constant 'cloud' lingering, probably due to the atmosphere the manager is causing. Greenwich Book Time is one of the best shops in Greenwich. My family used to bring me here as a kid & at nearly 30, I am still shopping there! One of those shops where you can go in JUST to have a look & come out £30 poorer! The range of books is fantastic, although they won't ever have any new releases as the books are all remaindered so usually a few years old. The selection of children's books is particularly good with classics from Peter Rabbit & Thomas the Tank Engine to modern ones such as Minions & Peppa Pig. They are a great shop to buy supplies for children's birthday parties from, as a few 'cheap' books last a lot longer than some sweets will. They have a great range of cookery books although they sell very few vegetarian books, & sadly no vegan ones, though I know they would like to as I have spoken to a few members of Staff who have said they have looked to order some in but they aren't available in their warehouse. They also sell graphic novels at a very cheap price compared to comic book shops in Central London. One of the best things about the shop is their calendars! They get them in usually at the end of November & they start out at about £3 though do go down in price after the new year but the popular designs go very quickly. They make fantastic presents & I have been known to buy extras to cut up & frame. All of the Staff are lovely & helpful. They will often try to track down books & phone/email with updates. I have gone in first thing in the morning & just as they were about to close & they have never been anything but polite & friendly. read more

This place is just way too convenient, places smack bang in the middle between Greenwich Station and the University/Museum; you can't help but be taken in by all the books. It's fabulously cheap and the stock is on constant rotation with new stuff, I've never left disappointed or without making at least a small purchase and lets be honest, that's what you want from a book shop. read more

This bookshop has been here for years. Its changed hands in the last three years. The prices are now £3to £5 Still really good value. There is a large choice for such a small shop and it caters for all ages and tastes. Really a great place for pressies for all the family and friends. Worth a visit, opposite the cinema, right by the bus stop. read more

The selection of books is quirky and interesting with great prices, so that gets high marks. The problem I have is with the customer service. I walked in 5 minutes before closing time (which I was informed of after I walked in) and the girl at the till was rather eager to close shop (in my mind I was thinking "who would turn down business?!") She was unwelcoming and needed exact change (which I, as a tourist, did not have). Once again I thought, "who would turn down business just to get exact change?!" Nonetheless I complied and somehow managed to dig through the depths of my wallet to hand her the two pounds. read more
