Great bookshop, record store meeting place, venue for talks by authors : for example in 2011 An Evening with. . .Owen Jones Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class

By far the best bookstore I have ever been in. A wonderfully unique collection, charming building, and very helpful staff. I spend a few hours in here and could have spent a few more. Didn't try the cafe though, I was too busy!

I am in book heaven! As soon as I stepped in I thought I was in a dreamland and dared anyone to wake me! I've come here a few times to collect items for work, so I never get to spend more than 20 mins. The staff are incredibly friendly and would go above and beyond to help their customers. I'm hoping my next visit would allow me more time to explore from top to bottom. Love this bookshop!

Has a great selection of London-centric books, perfect for any tourists wanting to bring home a literary slice of the city!

“They occasionally have the odd book signing, the last I went to on Gower Street, was for Aravind Ardiga's White Tiger.”

I'm not much of a shopper on vacation, but I do make exception for bookstores. Hatchards is…read moreexceptional, and I'm so glad we made for it on our short trip to London. The oldest bookstore in the UK, Hatchards was founded by John Hatchard in 1797. It's been in its current location on Piccadilly since 1801. Hatchards has sold books to the royal family since Queen Charlotte (1744-1818) became a loyal customer. The store holds appointments by royal appointment to King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Beyond its amazing history, it's also just an incredible shop. Several stories, with a gorgeous spiral staircase, Hatchards sells everything: rare books, signed books, Harchards publications (The Hatchards Library), and so much more. My husband and I spent less than hour browsing Hatchards (in different sections; I lost him for a while), and we left with maybe 8 books. The store is so well stocked, I kept finding more books I wanted to take home. The customer service was friendly at checkout, which was the cherry on top of a great store. It is simply one of the nicest bookshops I've ever had the pleasure to shop at.

I adore this bookstore. They have multiple levels and endless novel options. If you don't see what…read moreyou are looking for all the staff can assist in finding it for you. They are super helpful and kind. I was able to snag a novel I was searching for that I couldn't find because it had a different cover than in the US. So happy they helped me find it!

If…read moreyou're unsure about opening hours and you want to visit, I recommend firing off a tweet to @SECONDHOMELDN ** Popped in to Libreria last night for a quick reconnaissance mission. New independent bookshops aren't exactly ten a penny. It also happened to be World Book Day, I have just realised. It was meant to be. I love how it looks from the outside. Like a portal to another world. You go down Hanbury Street, think you must've missed it and then...suddenly it's there. Stylish black shopfront with a nice inviting glow. This was only a very quick visit but I like how they do things in Libreria. First, I have to note that there was a Riga RP-1 record player with Velvet Underground & Nico on the turntable so...good start. No espresso bar here. No mobiles allowed. Comfy seating and little nooks to sit down and check out a book. Tick tick tick. Sally, Libreria's director, introduced herself to me and explained how things were laid out. Very friendly and helpful. Books are largely organised alphabetically, fiction on the left and nonfic on the right. However, within that, books are clustered into themes or ideas, in order to promote interesting combinations of books nestling next to each other. Great idea. Pure A-Z is so 2015. Also, they have asked celebs to do a mini-curation of their favourite books. Shami Chakrabarti's faves are currently on display. I think the idea is to change everything round every quarter. Events are also gonna happen here. I dutifully added my email to the mailing list on the front desk. Waterstones can do one.
