And while you're queuing to pay, there are more temptations on your way to the till - for book junkies this is worse than the sweet counters in supermarkets! Daunt Books is a small chain of independent booksellers with an emphasis on travel and literature. I like the way they curate their shops and always succeed to find a gift here - but not without buying one or two books to keep myself.

It's not big, but not too tiny, and is independently owned and operated. They carry all the latest fiction and non-fiction, and not just the best-sellers, either. They do special topical displays. Yesterday was a rack of about 10 books about finance and the global economic crisis. They have a large section of Jewish books, catering to the local demographic. Their sale/discount section is one of the best I've seen. It's a couple of shelves near the back, and one right under the cash counter, but they're not the typical cheapo books you see in those sorts of bins. Lutyens and Rubinstein is a wonderful independent bookshop on Kensington Park Road, near the…read morejunction with Elgin Crescent, about ten minutes' walk from Notting Hill Gate tube station. Although it is not a large shop, the owners have managed to cram in an eclectic selection of books, both contemporary and classic, with an emphasis on the twentieth century, and can order in any book currently in print but not in stock, within 24 hours. They are arranged in alphabetical order rather than by subject, although children's books, large illustrated books and poetry have their own separate shelves. The lovely owners and their assistants are happy to make (and receive) recommendations. Delicious coffee, tea (and sometimes biscuits) are available downstairs for a minimal charge and the shop also sells framed linocuts, cards and a quirky range of perfumes. Well worth the detour.

I suppose it is a bookshop but this place takes the biscuit. There is an insane amount of books here and their warehouse apparently has over 1 million books. You can go and view but with prior arrangement with the owners. However, that said this place is amazing next to us to the Osterley bookshop, which I've also written a review about. It's one of the best book shops in London, no doubt at all, the prices are incredibly reasonable. The selection is insane, finding the book you want. May be a bit difficult because it is absolutely rammed. I think only three or four people at a time to get in there and brows, but the guys who run it are really nice chaps. I love these kind of places anyway and I especially like them as an antidote to Waterstones, WH Smith and all those. The stories have stories somewhere like this and they've got the coffee and tear stains to show for it. And for all that compromise there is a significantly reduced price, especially if you have a look on the shelves outside you can get some really good bargains. Especially, worthwhile considering how many books you just read once and never really look at again.

Close to the entrance gates of Osterley Park is this wonderful and eccentric little second-hand…read morebookshop. The shop's tagline, the shop that has fans, not customers seems very appropriate: the interior is cramped and chaotic, and many of the shelves are lined two-deep with books, making this a place to rummage rather than browse. But that's part of the charm, and also makes it possible to find the odd bargain, hidden away (as I did). They also sell an extensive line of reasonably-priced greetings cards, a selection of small antiques - and their own honey. Eclectic indeed. The staff are helpful in a nice, laid-back sort of way. Eagled-eyed visitors will spot of the unusual design of the building: from 1884 until 1934 this was 'Osterley Park and Spring Grove' station on the District Line, until replaced by the present Osterley station, half a mile away. The bricked-up access to the footbridge can be seen at the back of the shop, and the platforms are still in place.

Although I normally prefer small,…read morehole in the wall, second-hand bookstores, and this is exactly the opposite of that- I absolutely loved it. The design of the library as well as the decor and atmosphere made it feel much less like a department store styled bookstore, and like a public library. The staff were very friendly and helpful as well and seemed to be very enthusiastic about their job.
