If disappointment had an official headquarters, it would be Montrose Marketplace. The place somehow…read moremanages to feel overcrowded and underwhelming at the same time. Parking is a nightmare, the layout makes no sense, and getting in and out feels like a test of patience. It tries to come across as trendy, but it ends up feeling more like a collection of random businesses with no real flow. Unless you enjoy circling for parking, dealing with traffic, and wondering why you came in the first place, there are plenty of better places to spend your time.

The fear of more high rises being built in this area has been a huge let down in the community. This isn't the right area for high rises and it's sad. Thankfully, whoever bought this lot, has really made an effort to collab with local Houston vendors to showcase their homemade artwork and food trucks to sell. This new "temporary" addition to the area has been a great livelihood to people who live around the area. Especially for myself who lives just down the street. I noticed when the lot being torn down, and cleaned up, small little tents started to pop up and then weeks later, on the weekends, more and more tents. And eventually a full on market. Its gotten so much attention just driving down Westhiemer that you can't help but pull into the lot and check it out. I've personally boughten a few items from local vendors and its nice to know that you're supporting the community. They open on the weekends, Saturday and Sunday from 12-5pm.

Last but not least, the Chilaquiles tomatillo & chipotle salsa makes the the list for one of my favorite salsas. The prices are definitely more than you pay at the grocery, but everything is local and fresh. Definitely worth it! I plan on trying to make it by every month to stock up. Tip: park on the opposite side of Heights Blvd and walk over instead of trying to use the parking lot.

While there are a couple of farmer's stands with fresh produce, nuts and dairy, I would say most stands sell prepared food items. There's a wide range of items from fresh baked bread, salsas, kombucha, donuts and more. There's also several coffee vendors to grab a nice beverage to sip while strolling the booths. Parking is very limited for this market. Expect to park on a neighboring street (be sure to pay attention to parking signs) and walk a couple of blocks to reach the market. Another solid option is to walk or bike in from the heights bayou trial. This is a great option to get a little exercise and reduce congestion in the area. Overall, a great market! Don't forget a reusable shopping tote and bring some cash if you can!

Afterall, this market is smackdab infront of Downtown Houston's City Hall and only up and running on Wednesdays 11am-2pm - LUNCH TIME! I mean, who really wants to buy a bag a produce and haul that back to the office? But samosas? Or puposas? Or a plate of soul food? Cold brew coffee or fresh juices? Hell yeah. That's a fantastic lunch. And all in an outdoor setting. This market features 30+ international food vendors from all over the world. Jerk chicken. Brazilian churrascaria. Dumplings. Tacos. Additionally, there are food trucks a'plenty. AND... there's live music. I'm lucky enough to work from home, but you downtown "deskies" can appreciate the fresh air, music, vitamin D and good eats.

Located on the artsy…read moreand colorful Esplanade along Navigation, this market is open year-round - but only on Sundays. It's not a food/produce/meats heavy farmers market like many others in Houston, but you will find some local farmers selling produce, eggs, CSA boxes, and pre-packaged meals. And you will find a lot of artists goods/gifts and unique purveyors: dog food/treats, soaps, jewelry, bagged coffee, barbecue sauces, Indian food... If you are ever on the hunt for a locally-made and unique gift for a friend, check out this market on a Sunday. I recently bought a handful of gifts for a friend's birthday (and a purse for myself!). On a hot summer day, like the present, they have industrial fans blowing in every direction; they also have live music (sometimes mariachis on holidays). The newly placed shipping containers house permanent shops that are open beyond the market hours, so you're able to check them out on different days of the week, including Perry Ideas and Rasa Libre Coffee (they sell buñuelos, too!) I think as the crowd grows in size, more food and produce vendors will pop up. Support this market on a future Sunday, and then pop over to Ninfa's for some margaritas and brunch.

Growing up without seeing a single business owner of color, I planned to pass this beautiful gift on to my children...and y'all, I finally found it! I found the Houston equivalent! I've watched this market grow from a budding toddler to post pubescent adults, & while they now have a physical location in Pearland, for anyone who just read that sentence and thought "but that's too far", this review (of 1st Friday & second Saturday market held at the Buffalo Soldier Museum) is for you. I truly have a love affair with Blck Market Houston (and yes, they leave out the A). One of the largest meets of black owned businesses & entrepreneurs, they really puts the ease in supporting local black owned businesses. In the last few years, I've noticed a spike in vendor variety- artists, bakers, coffee cos, clothing, plants, alt milk, waist beads, "you name it"! Plus, there's often food trucks & live entertainment, so the whole event feels like a mini festival. They offer both indoor & outdoor vendors. My friend even held her book launch here (back in the before times). They've also recently pivoted to maintain a safe environment during "these uncertain times", so if you're truly looking to learn about/support small black businesses in the greater Houston area, they have you covered. Just make sure to get a ticket ahead of time.
