Whitney Canyon Park offers well-maintained hiking trails in a lovely environment including chaparral and riparian habitats. And there are waterfalls, too. Having hiked here twice, I encountered one waterfall that had water and one that did not. I'm not sure if the waterfalls are year-round or if they depend on the rainfall in any given year; either way, they're located in beautiful canyons well worth the effort to find out. There are wildflowers to be found in spring, also depending on rainfall. Whitney Canyon was named after a local rancher, John Whitney, who owned the property at one point. The property was then purchased by the county and used as a recreational ranch. Oil was also discovered and there are active oil pumps nearby. The land (442 acres) then narrowly avoided being turned into an OHV site or dump; it was dedicated as open space after being purchased by the City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. Thank goodness. Free ample parking. Free admission. Great place to relax, hike, and get some fresh air and exercise. Highly recommended.

My BF found this hidden gem and I'm glad he took me here. The pathway is mostly paved until you surpass the first stream of waterfall. Then if you're adventurous and up for a challenge, you'll have to do a bit of bouldering to maneuver pass the first waterfall to get to the second and third tier. I was hesitant but with cautious planning, it's definitely doable. I highly recommend this trail if you're looking to find a hike that isn't crowded. If you choose to just stick with the path, this is easily doable for all ages. However, if you want to see more waterfall, then I'd rate this hike more on the tough moderate level side.

Excellent choice for a family friendly trail. I would consider the trail easy. If you go during the right time you could see one or more waterfalls on this trail. I used the alltrails app and it worked perfectly and guided me correctly. To make it to the first waterfall you will have to hike in about 1.5 miles in. The trail is currently green and nicely shaded in some parts. Parking is easy and you can park on the concrete parking lot or dirt parking lot. The trailhead is close to the 14 freeway. Keep in mind there are two trails here. Take the one closest to the dirt parking lot for the waterfall trail. I am definitely looking forward to hiking here one day with my husband and future children.

It's a well maintained series of easy to mid-tiered hiking trails, that has excellent and easy off/on freeway access with a smaller upper parking lot, but a larger one just around the corner. The trails are well maintained and you can find waterfalls in the canyons or peaks up above; the trails even connect to various other parks if you'd like to hike far enough!

Epic, multiple waterfalls. Very buggy trail, mostly flies. Hike is easy until the very end where it becomes a little precarious with some scrambling and rope assisted areas if you wish to reach the many upper falls.

This hiking place is good for work out. My hiking buddy and I took The Beast and we didn't finish it. It was a hot day when we hiked. We are almost to the top when we decided to come back down. It is better to hike this trail early. Elsmere Canyon Trail is manageable. Lots of shades and easy trek. Parking gets full but you can always find a spot. No bathroom facility.

    Trail close to the trailhead.

So far my favorite trail locally. It's approximately 3.2 mile out and back. You'll be crossing more than 6 streams. If you're planning on seeing the multi level waterfalls make sure to wear shoes with very good grip. It gets really slippery walking the rocks specially when wet.

Such a great hike! Placerita was closed for Christmas so we decided to check this one out. My new fav! The path we took included lots of uphill treks but then also got pretty low into a valley. This means you have to prepare for both sun and shade. There isn't really a rewarding view or anything but the workout factor is great. There aren't many hikers around so don't come alone.

This was very easy to find. Definitely a great first time experience with lots of different trails to go along. I went on the trail that leads you to a few waterfalls. This hike was more like a long moderate trail that loops around. In total about 3.5 miles or so. I highly recommend this place for a great easy to moderate hike.

Great trails for hiking and biking. You can hike up in elevation or just follow the creek to some small waterfalls.

Ask the Community - Whitney Canyon Park

How do you find the waterfall?

By taking the Elsmere Canyon Trail I guess but when we took this trail last time, no water falls at all. Probably because it hasn't been raining that hard and the water dried up.

Can you bring dogs on this hike?

Yes just be sure to have your leash on your pup because you can't always see people coming and just in case it's always better to make sure you're safe.

When going to the waterfall, which trail is it? The Beast or Elsmere Canyon Trail?

I think it's the Elsmere Canyon. I went up the The Beast and didn't led me to the falls..

Can you park an RV overnight?

There's no over night parking of any kind

It was so intense but so worth is at the top I saw some coyotes on the others side- like a pack but the stayed on their side. Some people bring their hiking sticks and whistles and some just brave the wild :/. While we made it out alive, won't lie. Seeing like 5-6 coyotes at once kinda scared me but they were pretty far off. They have a nice little park (not a kid park with swings) you can walk around for a calmer and easier walk. They have other trails there that I haven't been on. So I'd just say wear good shoes if you're gonna tackle the big trails and maybe there hiking sticks (I need to get one) and anything for safety. It has many signs that there are rattle snakes. I haven't seen one but I believe them lol. I prefer to go early because in my mind, they wouldn't be out and about yet ‍ since it's not too hot.

The fruit has not been properly tended to in decades, so it's not really yummy grapefruit, but on occasion you'll see some people plucking and tasting to quell their curiosity. The park has a relaxed and open atmosphere that makes it easy to enjoy without feeling rushed. I noticed right away how many teenagers were hanging out there, whether they were sitting on the grass, using the playground, or taking pictures around the park. Seeing that many teens made the whole place feel energetic in a way that I think teenagers would really enjoy. What surprised me most was how playful certain parts of the park felt even though it is just a regular community park. The bright playground structures and big open fields almost look cartoonish from a distance, which makes them fun for taking photos. I did not have to pay anything to enjoy any of the areas, so walking around felt simple and stress free. Even though it is not a themed attraction, the colors and layout give it a lighthearted vibe that teenagers who love taking pictures or hanging out would appreciate a lot. This was my first time visiting the park, and I did not realize how much there was to enjoy until I walked around. There were plenty of places to sit and relax, and the park felt clean overall, although a few areas looked a little older. That is part of why I am giving it four stars instead of five, because it is a great park but not perfect. Still, I appreciated how easy it was to enjoy myself there. The teenagers around the park made the space feel more alive, and it reminded me how fun it can be to be in a place where people are just enjoying themselves. Even though I have only visited once before writing this review, it left a strong impression on me. I would definitely recommend it, especially for teenagers. They would love the open spaces, the photo friendly spots, the relaxed environment, and the chance to hang out somewhere that feels playful and creative.
