Inn At Battle Creek

We were pleasantly pleased and impressed! Dreamy Victorian/country decor and design. It's spacious and has a neat history! -Interesting use of closets to create bathrooms too! Lynne made us feel at home. She welcomed us at the door upon arrival, gave us a tour, we visited a little, then she gave us our privacy to enjoy. We had a loosely-planned schedule that took us to Ida Grove for wine tasting, a terrific meal, sight seeing and some hiking.  In the evening, we made a point to spend time on the porch at the B&B to sip some wine in some pleasant June weather. It was relaxing! Lynne, knowing these plans from our conversation upon arrival, was so thoughtful and left out two wine glasses along with a corkscrew to open our bottle of wine that evening. Breakfast on Sunday morning was delicious and delightful at a table next to paned windows overlooking the side yard.  We couldn't have been happier! We now have an amazing memory that we will share and tell for years to come! We think the price was very affordable! In fact, we plan to come back in the fall. We highly recommend the Inn at Battle Creek!

The rooms are spacious and charming; the fridge and pantry are generously well-stocked; the living room and game room are large and make the stay unique and special. It is a mansion home away from home. Across the street is a three mile hilly woodland trail (behind the Art Museum and rose garden). The neighborhood us safe and beautiful. Highly recommend for both business and leisure travel. Seven large bedrooms can accommodate a group. Please note: The only negative reviews that keep this from being five star was many years ago under prior owners. I was here at that time and had a very positive experience during my stay, though the family/owners were dealing with very difficult health challenges. The atmosphere in the home is five star now.

Beds are very comfortable, linens wonderful, and plush towels and robes in each room. There is access to snacks and drinks 24/7 and the refrigerator is well-stocked to make yourself an amazing breakfast. The shared spaces are comfortable and inviting and the game room in the basement is a fun addition! We were there to bike the area trails with friends and the location is just perfect. One of the trailheads is right down the hill and we biked downtown to the Des Moines Farmers Market and beyond and got an easy 20 mile ride in on beautiful trails. We highly recommend the Butler House on Grand for a getaway for two or for a group of friends!

The room was well decorated and so clean that we were convinced we were the first to stay in the rooms. Upon talking to the owner we learned that she just loves what she does. There were also some sweet touches like Odwalla juices and popcorn and a yummy breakfast. I highly recommend this place for couples, friends or anyone looking to stay in a sweet charming town....especially if you are a Bridges of Madison County fan.

We stayed in rooms #3 and #4. Loved the decor in both rooms and it was nice to have a small kitchenette in each room as well. Breakfast was excellent during our stay and delivered promptly to our room. They had treats for snacking as well as a refrigerator filled with a variety of drinks. The hospitality was outstanding. Winterset is the town where the movie "The Bridges of Madison County" with Meryl Strep and Clint Eastwood was filmed. The B and B was also in the movie as the motel where Francesca's children stayed when they come back for her funeral. Neat experience to stay there as we are big fans of the movie. Also, Winterset is the birthplace of John Wayne and a nice museum is also in town honoring him and his acting achievements. Thanks to our excellent hosts, Justin and Johna for a wonderful stay!

The house is literally within walking distance of the Story Country Conservation Center and beautiful McFarland Park, a 200 acre park that offers nearly 6 miles of walking trails through tall grass prairie and woodland habitat with a 6.5 acre lake and streams. Owner and chef Stewart Hinerfeld shows off his culinary skills using fresh produce grown on the property. And it goes without saying the food is amazing and unlike anything I have ever encountered at other inns. The house offers all of the charm and nostalgia of yesteryear with its antique furnishings, yet with all of the modern ammenities including very reliable wireless internet service. I was literally given access to the entire house and property and was most grateful for the opportunity to set up my microscope in the living area so I could continue to study prior to my exam. I especially enjoyed the company of the two friendly felines, Stewie and Stella, who took an exceptional liking to my microscope and enjoyed sitting next to me while I continued cramming for my exam. I really enjoyed my stay at the Green Belt Bed and Breakfast and sincerely appreciated the country setting and will most definitely return! Greta Heismeyer Krafsur, DVM
