We looooovvvveeee this Taekwondo academy! My son has been going here for a little over one year…read morenow. Master Kim and Master Yuk are great with the kids. There are people of all different levels and they truly care about teaching the right techniques. A lot of Tae Kwon Do places might try to push for more belt tests to make money, but I know that they really try to prepare the students to excel and move up on belt levels only as necessary. My son loves going and he looks forward to his lessons. I highly recommend checking it out if you're not sure. I think they have some introductory lessons at a discounted price. Talk to the owner, master Kim, who has trained with the best in Korea and here in the states too!

Firstly the Korean master, who received years of strict training in Korea, takes his class seriously and right technique and spirit of Taekwondo is always his aim. It's also not a crowded Dojang with reasonable numbers of kids in each class (typically about 5 kids). So each kid can get enough attention. One thing that Master Kim earned credit for himself among the parents is that he never intends to commercialize his class. Instead his belief is "It's the quality that makes difference", and he never mind teaching a little more and a little longer. Before my daughter joined this school I did some research about other taekwondo schools in Lincolnshire, Northbrook and Deerfield. I am happy that I made right choice!

This martial arts school transformed me into the woman that I am today. I spent half of my life…read moretraining at US Elite Martial Arts, I practically spent my childhood and grew up here. Though I was too young and immature between the ages of 3 - 14 years old to notice, I can see now the lasting effect that this school had on me. As I was strengthening my physical body, I was nourishing mentally. Through every kick, I was gaining patience and discipline. With every punch, I became more confident and driven. I could write a book about all the things that I learned between the ages of 3-14 years old while I was training with US Elite Martial Arts. But to give you a short version, Master Greer reminded me that one's voice and the ability to ignore is more powerful than any kick or fist. Every time he made me spar with someone bigger or older than me, he was training me to accept a loss and a "no" and grow and learn from it. With every passing year, I grew more patient and more hardworking. My ability to read and understand others stemmed farther than anticipating my opponent's next kick. I began to organize and manage my time more efficiently, leaving room to get good grades, spend time with friends and family, play other sports, and train here at US Elite. It's crazy to think about how pivotal being taught these things at a young age was for my growth. When one is that young, they learn the most from their environment, and I am truly grateful every single day that this was the one I was apart of. Not only was I learning and excelling in martial arts, but I was also pushing and developing into a disciplined, self-confident, and motivated individual whose communication skills, respect, and kindness were pillars of their being before the age of 12. Master Greer and the team carved out a path for me to truly understand myself. They showed me that I am in control of my own life and that I can't go around pointing fingers at other people because I am not where I want to be. Through US Elite Martial Arts, I was taught to be confident in my decisions, to never give up, and to always work and train harder than anyone else in the room.

This is a very kind environment and I would recommend this to other kids trying to get in better shape or just to get stronger and have a quality time. I met a lot of great people there and some of my current best friends were from Martial Arts. US Elite helped us get stronger both physically and mentally and we have been proud black belts the last two years. --Danny W. & Alan M.

We visited 3 other places before finding ATA and stayed. The first three places weren't very kid friendly and the instruction was more geared towards teenagers and up. The ATA program is definitely designed better for kids and they teach confidence and respect.

Instruction is poor. I have studied tae kwon do in three different martial arts schools. This place is in every way inferior. A mixed combat arts class at the local gym has more discipline and technique than the classes offered here. Or maybe that's how the instructor was with me, as the solitary female student in an adult class, and a groupon student at that. Further, not one of my classes ever started on time (7:45 p.m. class started at 8:25 p.m.). Instructor would frequently take breaks to chat with colleagues, play with his phone, or do his own thing. As a female student, and a white belt at that, I was severely injured by the black belt instructor and owner of this tae kwon do school. The instructor hit me hard enough to leave black and blue marks all over my hands, arms, legs, thighs, neck and back. I cannot even bend my right knee any more, and my doctor has ordered radiology tests and specialist appointments. I asked to wear padding before any contact activity, and was told it was unnecessary. I brought my own protective gear from home and insisted on using it during the entire class. Still, the instructor hit me with enough force that now, almost two weeks later, I still cannot walk without pain or stand up straight. The cost of the doctor's appointments alone negate any value obtained from the groupon. This is a martial arts school to avoid at all costs. If you like tae kwon do, try W. Kim Tae Kwon Do (Lake Zurich or Palatine) or Ki Martial Arts (Mundelein). The instruction is of higher quality, and female students are not discouraged from attending.

I am very proud and impressed at his growth - in strength, balance and confidence. This in less than a year. As a child and teenager (I am 34 now), I took Kempo/Kung Fu from a fantastic instructor in Plano, TX for many years. During that time, I also studied Taekwondo at another school, and took classes in various other martial arts. When my son turned five and told me he wanted to take Karate, and wanted me to take with him, I knew I had to find a school that taught Kempo. The problem was, the closest one I could find was way out in Paletine, and didn't really leave me impressed (I watched, but didn't take any classes there). I called my old instructor and friend Mr. Portnoy and told him the only schools close to me that met my qualifications were both USSD schools. His response was honest, and not totally positive. He said that although many of the techniques, etc... would be similar, my family's experience at USSD would be quite different to what I had experienced with him, and I may not like it. He explained USSD is known for an academy-like atmosphere and that they are set up like franchises (he actually referred to USSD as "McDojo". He knew I didn't like the cookie-cutter feel of the Taekwondo school I went to - and he warned me about the high costs. He was right, except I like the school I am at. In fact, I'm very happy. Yes, USSD is operated like an academy, and the schools are franchised. Both aspects are something that have added to mine and my son's success. He was right about the cost. The fact is, I feel that I am getting my money's worth. In One yelp review, Jim P. from Niles posts a 3-page essay about one of the local USSD schools (Skokie) which at one point states that USSD couldn't be good due to the rotation of instructors. That's ironic because I have always found great value from learning from different people - regardless of rank or style. My first instructor, Mr. Portnoy, from Plano, TX, is a very respected, highly ranked Grand Master of a different style. I think very highly of the advice he always gave me and consider him a great friend. He said repeatedly that learning from a variety of people was key to his growth and success in martial arts. Mr. Portnoy always pointed out that different people have different perspectives, and have honed different skills. That is the most positive aspect of the style of learning at USSD. You take what works best for you, and work on what you can. The difference to what Mr. Portnoy's school does to gain those perspectives for his students was that he brings in outside guest instructors for periods of time. At USSD, the knowledge base comes from within the USSD system. That works because the system is enormous. That contributes to the cost, which is also worth it to my son and to me. USSD also does without the "cookie-cutter" feeling that permeates many other systems. I receive a thorough explanation of what you are learning and why, which I found lacking in many other styles and schools (most notably my experience with Taekwondo). Most importantly, advancement is not based upon a time line, and not forced. It occurs only when the skill level attained. As it should be. I feel very strongly about the positive experiences I've had, just as I feel about knowing there are similar experiences awaiting anyone who brings a positive attitude to USSD. It's fun, and not easy. Nothing this good for you could ever be. It IS very rewarding.
