Subject: Formal Complaint Regarding Unethical Billing & Customer Service…read more To Whom It May Concern, I strongly advise against choosing The Hartford for insurance. Our experience has been nothing short of frustrating and irresponsible on the company's part. When my parents and I initially contacted The Hartford to bundle their home and auto policies, the customer service was warm, responsive, and accommodating. However, when an issue arose, every representative we spoke to was dismissive, unhelpful, and, at times, outright rude. This experience proves that saving a few dollars is not worth the stress and risk The Hartford has put us through. The Issue: We moved our home and auto policies to The Hartford after receiving a solicitation for lower rates, switching from State Farm after nearly 35 years. We bundled both policies and set up automatic payments of $390 per month. We reasonably assumed this amount covered both policies. However, in March 2025, we **accidentally** discovered that our **auto policy had been canceled three months earlier, in December 2024, due to non-payment**--without a single notice, call, email, or letter from The Hartford. We had been driving uninsured for three months without knowing. Unacceptable Customer Service & Lack of Notification: - No Notice of Cancellation: Despite being on autopay, we never received a single alert, statement, or notification that our payments were not covering both policies or that our auto insurance was at risk. - Refusal to Reinstate or Offer a New Policy: When I called to pay and reinstate the policy, I was informed that The Hartford does not reinstate policies canceled for non-payment--nor would they allow us to create a new one. - Rude & Unprofessional Treatment: When I requested proof of any missed payment notifications, I was met with condescension. The agent had no record of any letters or emails indicating that our policy was in default. - No Access to a Supervisor: When I escalated the matter, I was told that **supervisors do not take calls** and would have to call me back. I complied, but after 48 hours, no one reached out. - Failure to Follow Through: I called again, and a different agent submitted another request. Three more days passed--still no response. - Finally Reaching a Manager (After Multiple Calls & Delays): When I finally spoke with Jody M. from California, his response was dismissive, stating that we "should have logged into the website" to check for issues--despite the fact that our auto-payments were being processed and we received emails that **never indicated** a problem. The Consequences & Next Steps: - Driving uninsured for three months is terrifying and completely unacceptable.** The Hartford's negligence put us in a dangerous position. - We are filing a complaint with the **Better Business Bureau (BBB)** to formally document The Hartford's deceptive and unethical practices. - We will be **moving our homeowners policy immediately** and transitioning all policies away from The Hartford, including our **second home policy.** This experience has been a disaster. We trusted The Hartford with our family's financial security and safety, and instead, we were met with deception, negligence, and complete disregard for customer care. I like this company because they make my experiences easier. They're very knowledgeable and…read moreprofessional and they care. The only reason I can't give them 5 stars is because of the agents I have been given, they're not always easy to get ahold of. There have been times where I would leave a voicemail and not get a response for a few weekdays. That can be pretty frustrating especially when you need specific info at that point. Other than that I've had a pretty decent experience. I probably wouldn't recommend this company unless someone specifically asked me about them, but that's based upon my personal experience with other companies who I have received a better response from. But I really liked Hartford.
