This place isn't a corporate-type chain, but a wooden-beamed, crooked doorways, real, actual pub. Some reasons to love it: 1. Chequers is so cozy. There is a big fireplace and soft cushy chairs and sofas to lounge in. Even the dining room is warm and friendly and feels more like your grandma's house than a pub. 2. The menu. It is fabulous. There are a few favourites that you can always get, but there are always new dishes as well. They also have a vegetarian AND vegan menu--vegan friendly meals seem to be a rarity and I was impressed to find so many options. I've tried many different meals here and have never once had one that I didn't like! On the one occasion I wasn't keen on the options, they offered to make me something else. 3. The game room. Next to the bar is a small room packed with books, cards and board games. I'm a big-time sucker for a good board game and have wasted many an hour playing Scrabble in here. Everything about Chequers is welcoming and we're always happy to go back. Even my dog is welcomed with a bigh dish of water and last time was personally greeted by the owner. Definitely a winner for me!

Open fires in winter and a fairly decent menu of pub grub, with veggie options. Not very child friendly - don't take your little darlings unless they know how to behave. *GUSHGUSHGUSHGUSHGUSH!!!*…read more I can't say enough wonderful things about this pub. This five stars is 90% based on the food. Best pub food ever! First of all, there are 5 or 6 veggie options on the menu, which is a rarity. Some of their options are a mushroom stroganoff, vegetables au gratin, ploughman's sandwich, and a mediterranean pasta. My husband had veggie lasagna which was served with chips and salad. I had vegetables au gratin - broccoli, carrots, aubergines (eggplant to my american friends), bell peppers and onions, drowning in a rich cheese sauce topped with breadcrumbs. Heaven in a bowl!! There was a lovely salad on the side along with a generous portion of coleslaw. There's a nice selection of homemade desserts as well, which seem to change every week. We sampled the almond cheesecake which was amazingly delish. Aside from excellent food, there is good selection of beers. The manager is a super friendly guy who remembers us every time and always stops to have a chat. There's a cool layout with the bar in the entrance and two rooms off to either side. There's plenty of room for groups, however it's still small enough to feel cozy. Lots of outdoor seating as well. The White Hart is now a weekly trip for us!

Quite lovely Sunday dinner. Food was plentiful and very good array of choices. We have done several…read morepub meals and this was one of the best . We both chose the chicken, spinach an mushroom pie from the specials board. There was also quite good new potatoes (nice alternative choice from chips, they also had mashed) and the vegetable side was a veritable garden. Green beans, broccoli, peas and carrots - all in a portion size that would have sufficed alone. The tomato basil soup starter was delicious. We were unfortunately too full to partake of any of the yummy sounding desserts. Service was friendly and location is quaint-true locals type of place we go out of our way to find.

A great country pub in the small village of Woolmer Green. It has a great selection of well kept…read morereal ales with frequently changing guest ales. A good selection of larger and wines also on offer. The food here is wonderful, all made and cooked on site by their resident chiefs and all produce is sourced locally. The prices are very reasonably and on a Wednesday and Saturday they have a selection of home made pies priced at £5.75 which and are brimming with fillings, it also comes with a potato side of your choice and fresh veg, I normally struggle to finish it. The puddings are something to die for, highly recommend the cheesecake. As for the staff, I have not found another pub that has staff this accommodating and friendly, nothing is to much trouble for them, if something you want is not on the menu, they will try to accommodate your needs. The pub is an old coaching house it has a large bar area split by a fantastic open fire that is lit during the colder periods giving it that real country pub atmosphere. It has some big round tables in this area that can seat 6-8 people, ideal for having a chat and a drink with friends, it also has some soft sofas for lounging around on. They have a defined restaurant area, which is set to the side and tastefully decorated. I believe they also do B&B so an ideal location to stay if you like your country walks. All in all this is a lovely pub, give it a try if you are in the area.
