It was initially an emergency back-up if there was no beer in the fridge. Well, now it's a favorite after having been in town for two months. It's pretty much what we call in the States a "dive-bar". This can have both a negative and a positive connotation. In regards to Dreyer, it's positive. I love this place because it's everything a bar should be where you want to hang out and grab a beer. I don't need all the designer crap most new bars add to their "Innenausstattung". I want some comfortable chairs, a long "Theke" and interesting people. The bartender here (and owner I presume) as well as his wife (I presume) look like they've worked here their whole lives (maybe after short stints working at the docks). BUT, they are the two nicest people you could meet (even though the bartendar is huge and looks like he'd kick your a$$ if you met him in a dark alley). Plus, the people sitting around the bar (who seem to be there every night) sure are characters. One cool feauture is that the owner seems to collect clocks and there's something like 110 of them spread throughout the bar. A nice litte touch which you don't figure out the first night you're there. Anyway, this place is great and definately not your run of the mill watering hole. Check it out if you're up for something different which doesn't remind you of every other bar you've sat in the last couple of beers.

The beer selection is mostly standard, but they do also have Duckstein which makes me favour the place even more. Credit for me finding the place must be given to my old German teacher, Schaida. Apparently it's been a favourite of hers since she was a student at Hamburg uni. I don't think it's changed much over the years.

Yet it's a smoker-friendly bar which is a disadvantage for me personally but what the heck :) As a plus you could get the chance to bump into the odd rockstar coming from Knust or Schanze. The food was about 2 *'s and it's definitely a case of quality over quantity. I got currywurst - the curry sauce tasted bottled, and the sausage wasn't well cooked. My kids got schnitzel and they said it was "mid". Honestly I think German food kind of caps out at 4 *'s - there's only so much you can do with boiled potatoes and kraut and sausages.
