I've never had a nice beer in Schanze - I prefer to spend all my late Saturday nights wailing away…read morewith my friends in this dark dive off of the Reeperbahn, hoping that Peter the barkeep will act like an adult for once and not indulge us when inevitably we ask for a round of Mexikaners along with another platter of Astras. No one decides to go to Seilehütte - one just finds their way there. If you're unlucky and come on a night when my friends are there, you might not get a seat - it's not really a bar where people remain standing up, nor are there more than 15 or so seats. This makes for a somewhat intimate atmosphere, though certainly it's not a pretty sort of intimate. No, a night at Seilehütte has a kind of raw intimacy, as if someone came into your heart, scraped off all the hardened plaque and black matter and smashed it all together. It's morose and you'll die alone, but at least you and your friends will all go down after beers together. Additionally, Seilehütte I believe is currently closed but may return shortly. So I guess you'll have to wait on exploring that sadness.

Astra Stube is one cool little bar! It's basically a tiny little gig venue located under the S-Bahn…read moretracks in the north-west of the schanze. It's a bit out of the way, but if you're into your local independent rock and indie music, then you'll definitely want to put this on you list of must-visit places. The only real drawback is that the place is just too small, so it gets very sweaty very fast. Oh well, you can't have everything :) Since writing the above review two years ago a few things have happened. 1) The bar was going to be closed (along with many nearby businesses) due to work on the above railway bridge 2) There was a large outcry; notably the Jan Delay album "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Soul" features a photo of the bar as it's front cover; The work was put back a few years 3) The popular Hamburg-based film "Soul Kitchen" featured a scene in the bar, somehow managing to make the bar look something other than tiny.

I'm having a hard time remembering the names of the food I had, but the nice thing about Bei Teresa…read morewas that they had many explanations in English. Food here was a little more expensive than I would have liked, but the prices definitely reflected the portion size. I ordered a Kartoffelsuppe Zurek (potato and sausage soup reminding me of a Toscana style soup) for 5,5 Euros, a hot fruit tea for 2,9 Euros, and a large order of fish and pan-fried potatoes (Pannfisch Bratkartoffeln) that I split witih a friend for 14,9 Euro. Definitely plenty of food, and really good. The soup was very flavorful and not too heavy despite the potatoes. The fish was also good, there was 1 salmon, and 2 pieces of white fish (maybe a herring?) topped with a slightly sweet mustard sauce, and the pan fried potatoes with its cripsy edges were great! Included a small side salad and sauerkraut. Only 2 people were really working there, but service was good and we were able to communicate well enough despite our waitress' limited English.

Rude and xenophobic waiter. The bold waiter is the rudest…read moreperson I met my whole life. After we asked to be served for 20 minutes (after a festival in the city) and see 3 tables being served before our even arriving later than us, this bold waiter came and when asked the menu he was rude asking if we had waited for too long. When we said that was quiet long actually, he was rude and shout at us making jokes about the festival we were, and we shouldn't expect a fast service as we are festival goers. He kept making jokes about us and the music we listen... We decide to leave instead of having a problem with our food after all this rudeness. I can't understand how he is still working there (maybe he is son of one of the owners!). If you expect to be served in less than 30 minutes (if you are not German!) and have the minimum customer service and politeness do NOT GO TO THIS PLACE!

The drinks were moderately priced and shots are only 3€ which is pretty cheap. I tried the beetroot Negroni. I thought it was a bit too bitter but was interesting. The bartenders were super friendly and helpful. The bathroom wasn't bad as well. Would definitely recommend this spot in this area. Especially because it wasn't as crowded compared to clubs and the streets.

Walk through the front door into the kitchen/utility room. In the back there is a living room, then further back still is the bedroom (also where you'll find the table football table, oddly. Update: We went to 3 Zimmer Wohnung again last night and I accidently found out that theyve massively expanded! Basically I was looking for the toilet (having never been to them here before) and took a wrong turn in the maze downstairs which landed me in the table-football room. After talking to the barman it seems that they only opened the room up a few weeks ago. So the upstairs is the same 3 Room Flat that we've always known, but downstairs there is a new long room with a few sofas, a second bar and 6 table-football tables. Yes, 6. It's quite a cool game, but it's depressing how good all the locals are at it...

Better than the average British indie night…read more Ended up here, en route to the Schanze, and stayed all night. EUR4 entry and EUR2.50 for a bottle of lager is pretty reasonable for a Saturday and the music was the same clichéd bands you'd hear in the UK: Oasis, Blur, Joy Division but with more variety- eg instead of playing Love will tear us apart they played Disorder. Not recommended if you want something quentissentially Hamburg, but a good safe bet.

Not as stylish as the Sofabar across the road, but more music going on.
