However my favourite part of an escape to the Yarra Valley would have to be exploring what the wineries in the area have to offer. Coombe Farm is owned by the family of the famous opera singer Dame Nellie Melba. It's one of the oldest vineyard estates in the area and offers free tastings seven days a week (Tuesday and Wednesday is by appointment, I believe). The tasting room is far more relaxed than other nearby wineries. I was there round midday on a Sunday and the two ladies working could not have been more helpful. They were informative, friendly and keen to educate customers about their range of wines. It was such a pleasant experience. Compared to other tastings at different wineries, Coombe Farm stood out as somewhere more enjoyable. I felt as though I could have sat there for ages, chatting with the staff like old friends and trying wines. In particular it was non-intimidating, so I felt comfortable enough to ask questions that I'd been pondering about wine. As much as I may love drinking wine, I'm not extremely knowledge on the subject and this was a great opportunity to ask and learn more as I tried. In contrast, I felt rushed and a little bit intimidated at other wine tastings in the area. Next time I visit Coombe Farm, I would love to relax outside on the deck and watch over the vines, with a glass in hand. I'm already dreaming of another lazy Sunday wine exploration!

This was an expensive tasting that really left us with a bad taste in our mouths due to how bad the whole experience was. I WOULD DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO PAY FOR A CHANDON TASTING AS UT WAS JUST AWFUL AND A COMPLETE WASTE IF MONEY.

It's a little out of the way from the main vineyards of the Yarra Valley, but is definitely worth a detour on your way to/from the Valley. I'd suggest allowing plenty of time for tastings here, as there are a huge variety of wines to sample, including some muscats and masalas which are to die for! Being a small family run business, the service here is friendly and personal, and all of the staff that I've encountered here have been incredibly passionate about their wines. The wood fired pizzas available here are delicious! If you have a group visiting the vineyard, it is possible to pre-arrange food such as cheese/fruit boards, and Dorothy (one of the owners) is only more than happy to accommodate any special requests. The vineyard is really picturesque - the handmade sandstone building creates an inviting area for tastings, and there is also an outdoor seating area which is lovely to be able to enjoy a glass or two of wine and look out across the vineyard. This place is definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!

All the staff know their wines/beers/etc inside out and are fantastic guides to find you what you are looking for. Saturdays and some fridays they have tastings which are always really great. Join their mailing list so you know what is coming up. This place is definitely more than just a bottle shop- its like a community meeting spot and wine educator. They are also huge supporters of smaller craft producers. If you are on their mailing list you will see their great mix 6/12 deals on interesting wines (its worth joining with little spam I promise!). And their beer collection is varied and really interesting. A little on the ex-y side but they have beers from all around the world.
