Outside. The porch is huge & has tables.

We really enjoyed this visit. This mansion is BEAUTIFULLY restored, with many details everywhere you look. I stayed with my 13 year old daughter and we both noted how quiet the room was and we spent a very nice relaxing time reading. The breakfast the next day was perfect and the hosts are friendly and gracious. We also got in a trip to the Pony Express Museum because my 8th grader had never heard of it (!) - I changed that with this very informative museum. My pics do not do Whiskey Mansion justice.

Lobby decorated for Christmas. Especially enjoyed the lightly playing period music!

Staid over the Thanksgiving holiday while visiting the boyfriend's family. The lady who welcomed us was very nice and the place is well appointed. Especially enjoyed the vintage Christmas decorations. We only had one breakfast over our 3 night stay, but it was good. Frittata, fruit & two kinds of bread. Staid in the Spa Room and enjoyed the large claw foot jet tub. The boyfriend at 6'4" fit comfortably! The bed was warm and comfortable though very squeaky! Room was large and very comfortable and nicely decorated. Only complaint was the loud bed, otherwise a very lovely stay! Would certainly consider staying here on our next visit.

A beautiful, restored historic mansion in a bit of a sketchy neighborhood in St Joe stand as stark contradictions, but once inside Whiskey Mansion the world outside is much less conspicuous. Having suffered arson and gutting back in the 1990s (from what I understood), this mansion, which was built by a whiskey baron back in 1885, has been meticulously restored to its former glory. Too bad the rest of St Joseph has not been treated quite so well. Entering through the covered porch into the large sitting room, the formal dining room is straight ahead and the room where breakfast is served is to your left. A large entry hall leads to the ornate staircase that takes you to the guest rooms upstairs. On the second floor are seven bedrooms, five large with en suite baths and two "maids rooms" with a shared bath, one of which was our room ($89+tax, including breakfast). The rooms are nicely furnished with antiques or reproductions and have TVs with cable, a small refrigerator, heat/air conditioning (Mitsubishi), and wi-fi. There is even a staircase lift for disabled guests on the back (servants) stairs. Breakfast is served from 7am to 9:30am downstairs and from what I understand, French toast is the norm. Baked in the oven, two large pieces with maple syrup and globs of butter on top came on the plate along with a small fruit cup with fresh pineapple and honey dew melon cubes. The French toast was good, rich and sweet, but there was a little too much of a good thing and I would hate to know how many calories we consumed. Some eggs, bacon, hash browns, and biscuits and gravy would have been nice, but I do not think the kitchen has that capability. If you are paying $100+ per night for a room, you should get more than French toast and some fruit for breakfast. Coffee and tea were self-serve. A historic and important river city, St Joseph was the hub for westward expansion in the 1800s with Station #1 of the Pony Express as well as its headquarters and the prime railway embarkation point for Gold Rush travelers headed west. Unfortunately, there is not much happening downtown these days and many of the beautiful old buildings and homes have fallen into disrepair or have been boarded-up. If you are looking for things to do or good restaurants to eat at, you will be challenged in this "once" thriving town, making $100 per night and up for a room a bit of a stretch. I have stayed at nicer B&Bs in much more attractive locales for $75/night, probably a price more appropriate for St Joseph, Missouri. So, with deductions for being slightly overpriced, the limited breakfast menu, and the sketchy neighborhood ... CombatCritic Gives Whiskey Mansion B&B 7 Bombs Out Of 10 ... Bombs Are Good!

Great stay. I went with a group and we were in several rooms. Very quiet in the rooms. The house is beautifully restored. My husband and I walked around the neighborhood and enjoyed looking at the other houses. Everyone we met was very friendly. Breakfast was great. Breakfast can be served to you in the dining room or outside on the porch. It was a nice weekend, so we ate on the porch. Will definitely stay here again if ever in St. Joe. Highly recommend.

We enjoyed our 2 night stay at Whiskey Mansion. This was our first experience with a B&B. Staff was very nice, room was clean, breakfast both days was good, the place was quiet and relaxing, and the house itself was beautifully decorated with period pieces. I would have given five stars if the pillows were better (they were down and down pillows are always uncomfortable to me), and I don't think our radiator was working (that was probably operator error; the bedding was nice and warm, so that helped). Would definitely stay here again!

Front of the house, awesome porch!

Great stay and the renovation of the mansion is spot on. Loved learning of the history of the place and the town. Great breakfast also.

I've never seen a place with such beautiful woodwork and stained glass windows. Isobel was so kind to answer all my questions and dive into the history of St. Joe and the house itself, clearly a huge passion of hers. My wife and I stayed in the Romeo and Juliet suite and it was so cozy we had a hard time leaving. I was impressed how clean and functional everything was given the age of the home, Isobel left no detail untouched. Isobel was always available to address our needs. I showed up to breakfast an hour early one morning by accident and that didn't matter, she adjusted for me. The next morning I showed up an hour late to breakfast, when I went downstairs expecting to only have coffee available, she still prepared and served us our breakfast which was so kind and not expected. My only concern before arriving was the location not being very central. Turns out I was wrong. My wife and I could get to any of the restaurants downtown or off Fredrick in 3 to 5 min drive. Everywhere else in town could be driven to within 10min. We'll be back. (PS - Glory is wearing a jacket in photos only because we were on our way out the door. The home was set a very comfortable temperature and our room had an independent thermostat just for us.)

Enter the foyer, and you are transported to the late 19th century, though much of the furniture and art seems to harken from the 1910's. While I am no design expert all I can say is that every detail of this place seems to be as it was originally. Every motif, woodwork on the walls -,the wainscoting, beveled glass, hand carved wood above entrance to each room-its breathtaking! Even the vintage radiators are gorgeous! Our bedroom upstairs was quite large with a bathroom containing a lovely old clawfoot tub. The bed we slept in was so comfortable I have never slept so soundly. When we finally found the kitchen (this place is HUGE) we were happy to find it has been updated and has all the modern conveniences. There is so much food available! From cake, cookie and brownie mixes, to freshly baked cookies and yummy lemon cake, to good quality coffee and creamers. And anything you could ever want for breakfast is here - every flavor of oatmeal, cereals, breads, milk, juices, etc. I wish I could better describe the experience of staying, here was but you have to experience it for yourself. The house is huge and you can explore little nooks and crannies, play pool in the pool room or chess in a nook next to a large window, or watch TV in a living room or explore outside in the beautiful garden/yard with a cute and friendly pet cat who follows you as you explore. This was so so so much better than staying at a motel that we will be coming back to experience it again and make the drive from Louisville Kentucky just to stay in this historical oasis.

(If you prefer a ground floor room with a big 6 foot shower with double shower heads, there's something wonderful for you here too.) I can't get over the decor, it was so inviting. No attention to detail was spared. Comfy leather couches next to the hearth. Busts of former presidents, paintings of the revolutionary war era, and lots of country rooster touches. Puzzles, books, and games are all right there if you feel the itch to do something other than take in the peaceful countryside or watch a little TV in your room. We were greeted by Peggy the Inn Keeper with a smile and just a downright peachy attitude that rubbed off on us as soon as we entered. I reserved "The Cottage" which was a typical small town 2 bedroom house right next door. We also had a great time playing the Wii and relaxing in the living room. I highly recommend The Cottage to anyone. Now for the breakfast, truly amazing! The 3 course meal left me full for the rest of the day and Peggy's expertise in the kitchen was on full display through the presentation and quality of the breakfast she had made. Peggy really made the morning fun with her bubbly personality, and hearing some of her stories was one of the highlights of the morning. To top everything off, I somehow managed to leave my toiletry bag in the bathroom and didn't realize it until later that night. So here I was expecting to drive the hour on my lunch break to pick it up when I checked my email and Peggy had sent me an email stating that she found it and had already mailed it to me. Talk about going above and beyond what's required. I can't thnk you enough Peggy for an incredible experience. I'm already planning our next trip back so we can see some more Irish bands at O'Malleys!
