This property is a very nice and welcoming vacation spot. My Mother and I came out from California to Snt. Joseph Missiouri for a graduation. Owen and Holly were absolutely impeccable hosts. We really enjoyed this visit. This mansion is BEAUTIFULLY restored, with many details everywhere you look. I stayed with my 13 year old daughter and we both noted how quiet the room was and we spent a very nice relaxing time reading. The breakfast the next day was perfect and the hosts are friendly and gracious. We also got in a trip to the Pony Express Museum because my 8th grader had never heard of it (!) - I changed that with this very informative museum. What a wonderful experience. My husband and I were just passing through town on our way to take our daughter to grad school in Indiana. We had a lovely stay and felt like we'd experienced part of St. Joseph history. We stayed in the double queen room and had a wonderful nights sleep. The property is beautiful and living in a historic home myself, I have very high expectations. I'm also used to staying in high end hotels and the Whiskey Mansion B&B did not disappoint. The breakfast was top shelf! We have a wonderful souffle. The host was very charming and made us feel right at home. I loved our stay and if I am ever in that neck of the woods, I will stay again. On a side note, the neighborhood is in line with the rest of the town . I think that the other reviews have been unfair. Since we were moving, both of our cars were loaded up and we had a small U-Haul. We had no problems with security and I felt completely safe walking through the neighborhood. read more

Staid over the Thanksgiving holiday while visiting the boyfriend's family. The lady who welcomed us was very nice and the place is well appointed. Especially enjoyed the vintage Christmas decorations. We only had one breakfast over our 3 night stay, but it was good. Frittata, fruit & two kinds of bread. Staid in the Spa Room and enjoyed the large claw foot jet tub. The boyfriend at 6'4" fit comfortably! The bed was warm and comfortable though very squeaky! Room was large and very comfortable and nicely decorated. Only complaint was the loud bed, otherwise a very lovely stay! Would certainly consider staying here on our next visit. read more

A beautiful, restored historic mansion in a bit of a sketchy neighborhood in St Joe stand as stark contradictions, but once inside Whiskey Mansion the world outside is much less conspicuous. Having suffered arson and gutting back in the 1990s (from what I understood), this mansion, which was built by a whiskey baron back in 1885, has been meticulously restored to its former glory. Too bad the rest of St Joseph has not been treated quite so well. Entering through the covered porch into the large sitting room, the formal dining room is straight ahead and the room where breakfast is served is to your left. A large entry hall leads to the ornate staircase that takes you to the guest rooms upstairs. On the second floor are seven bedrooms, five large with en suite baths and two "maids rooms" with a shared bath, one of which was our room ($89+tax, including breakfast). The rooms are nicely furnished with antiques or reproductions and have TVs with cable, a small refrigerator, heat/air conditioning (Mitsubishi), and wi-fi. There is even a staircase lift for disabled guests on the back (servants) stairs. Breakfast is served from 7am to 9:30am downstairs and from what I understand, French toast is the norm. Baked in the oven, two large pieces with maple syrup and globs of butter on top came on the plate along with a small fruit cup with fresh pineapple and honey dew melon cubes. The French toast was good, rich and sweet, but there was a little too much of a good thing and I would hate to know how many calories we consumed. Some eggs, bacon, hash browns, and biscuits and gravy would have been nice, but I do not think the kitchen has that capability. If you are paying $100+ per night for a room, you should get more than French toast and some fruit for breakfast. Coffee and tea were self-serve. A historic and important river city, St Joseph was the hub for westward expansion in the 1800s with Station #1 of the Pony Express as well as its headquarters and the prime railway embarkation point for Gold Rush travelers headed west. Unfortunately, there is not much happening downtown these days and many of the beautiful old buildings and homes have fallen into disrepair or have been boarded-up. If you are looking for things to do or good restaurants to eat at, you will be challenged in this "once" thriving town, making $100 per night and up for a room a bit of a stretch. I have stayed at nicer B&Bs in much more attractive locales for $75/night, probably a price more appropriate for St Joseph, Missouri. Great stay. I went with a group and we were in several rooms. Very quiet in the rooms. The house is beautifully restored. My husband and I walked around the neighborhood and enjoyed looking at the other houses. Everyone we met was very friendly. Breakfast was great. Breakfast can be served to you in the dining room or outside on the porch. It was a nice weekend, so we ate on the porch. Will definitely stay here again if ever in St. Joe. We enjoyed our 2 night stay at Whiskey Mansion. This was our first experience with a B&B. Staff was very nice, room was clean, breakfast both days was good, the place was quiet and relaxing, and the house itself was beautifully decorated with period pieces. I would have given five stars if the pillows were better (they were down and down pillows are always uncomfortable to me), and I don't think our radiator was working (that was probably operator error; the bedding was nice and warm, so that helped). Would definitely stay here again! read more

Beautiful building with nice touches throughout. Breakfast was scrumptious and more than filling. The downside - the remainder of the guests were a large party that was very loud until well after 1 a.m. Then someone messed with the chairlift (which we didn't realize until 4:30 a.m.) when my husband got up to see what alarm was going off over and over. We met some friends from another state for a 3 day getaway and Whiskey Mansion was the perfect place! Gracious host, delicious food (understatement), and beautiful surroundings! Only complaint was the bedding could have been a little cozier. St Joseph didn't disappoint either. We found plenty of things to do and see, plus some surprisingly good restaurants! I give it a three because we paid for a lesser room, but as it was a slow weekend we got a free upgrade. I can't even explain how bad the first morning's breakfast was. French toast soup, or whatever it was the next day, was better than that, and it was terrible. There was another strange 'regular customer' staying there, as is usual at these places. The owner doesn't live on site, so that sort of thing happens. The en-suite toilet was totally inadequate, so we usually used one downstairs. So much for that upgrade. read more

Found this place on Yelp, but it was also recommended by Paul at Il Lazzarone (by luck we found that place, some of the best pizza I've ever had... Who knew St Joseph had such a gem!?). The Whiskey Mansion is run by Oleg, who rebuild the place after it burnt out in 1995. He apparently rebuilt it single handedly and runs it by himself. Looking at the pictures of the project in the album by the piano, I'm astounded and amazed that it was ever damaged at all because walking into the house is like going back in time. Feels like I'm in 1890 in the last corner of the civilized world before heading out onto the wild western frontier. It is an amazing achievement to have restored this historic house, and we really enjoyed staying here. The point of coming to St Joseph is to appreciate US history, and what better way to do that then stay in a historic house? The rooms are great and comfortable, the breakfast is outstanding, the host is wonderful, the location is perfect. Sit on the porch, sip a quality craft beer, and enjoy. I really enjoyed our night's stay here. We had the room with the adventurous jacuzzi tub and got a kick out of that. The host served a fabulous hot frittata to us for that morning's breakfast, with fresh fruit and the best sourdough bread. The furnishings and pictures were well kept, solid and interesting. After discovering this downtown hideaway this weekend, I want to share this hidden jewel with the rest of the world (or Missouri, at least). If you're looking for a home away from home with the same great hospitality you'll experience like staying at your grandparents' house (aka spoiled) then you'll find it here. The owner, Olin, welcomed us and checked us in himself. He made sure that all the guests had everything they needed. We marveled at his own restoration efforts in keeping this historic mansion, which is still ongoing. The breakfast was a perfect ending to our stay. We had sausage quiche with homemade bread and honey from his own bee farm. If you decide not to stay here, at least check out the cafe that opens Mondays to Fridays 8:00 am -1:30 pm. read more

Very dirty, we got to our room late and the refrigerator wasn't cooling and dirty...very. We tried to call the host that was supposed to be available until 9pm (we called at 8:30) and left a message but never heard back nor did she address it in the am. The neighborhood is very shady, there are a few nice houses but most are very run down or burned out. The patio is very dirty with beer cans and trash. The rug in our room hadn't been vacuumed for a long time. The mattress was very cheap and broken down with a cheap feather top on it, the sheets were cheap and had small holes in them. The towels were cheap, small and scratchy and they also only supplied one towel per person and as a woman I use two, one for my hair and one for my body. They left the tub on the sprayer mode when cleaning it and when we turned it on water sprayed all over the room including on the plug in that was located right behind the tub. There was a old towel laying on the floor behind the tub when we went to try and reset the plug in so the jumpers would work. Everything is on a extension cord with surge protectors but there is no bedside table for phones or anything else. They put a cheap plastic mattress cover on it that was ripped up. The room was decorated for the time period but there was a huge kimono hanging on the wall which was totally out of place. The portable air conditioner was filthy with deep dust on it. The main level had a handy cap bathroom that was extremely dirty and had broken tiles. The dust on the fixtures was literally 1/8 inch deep and I have pics to prove. There was dried hair all over. The main floor was not very clean with old coffee on the floor that was there the hole time we were there and although they dusted the main furniture they forget about the cob webs and dust building on the doorways and such. The breakfast was a baked waffle with a fruit cup and no offer of any kind of protein. The view from our room was the back yard/garden which was full of trash and toppled furniture. The pantry which was viable when they forgot to close the curtains shows there is food product and cleaning supplies being stored together along with bedding. The side of the house visable from the street had trash all around it and there is a cat that's friendly but it is obviously very sick. I know its theirs because there were cat food dishes on the porch also and I seen the cat eating the food they gave him. All in all this could be a nice place but it would need managment change and people that actually clean, care and invest in better linen if they want to continue to charge high prices for this place. read more

We had an excellent time at the Whiskey Mansion. The structure and decor was absolutely gorgeous. The Inn Keeper, Olin, was very friendly and helpful. He had perfect suggestions for places to go around town. He was warm and welcoming - just the right amount of interactive. Our room was comfortable and luxurious. Our breakfast was so good. I had a delicious French Toast. We truly loved every single thing about our stay here and cannot wait to go back. STAY AWAY!!! As a very open minded easy-going traveler, I find it hard to have to write this review. After 480 miles of driving, we arrive at the Whiskey Mansion only to find a shoddy run down attempt at a B&B in a shoddy, run down part of town. The website is horribly misleading. I realize a business has to put a bright face on the web but this is bordering on blatant misrepresentation. I firmly advised I would not stay therek and was given a broken record response of a week's cancellation. It is obviously struggling and I am not willing to put lipstick on this pig of a property. After years of dank hotels, concrete high rises in war-torn Serbia, and frequent "shady rests" I still couldn't find a way to overnight here. Keep driving!!! read more

This place was St Joseph at it's finest. The Whiskey Mansion has great charm, large rooms, lots of amenities and the feel of home. The homemade french toast was great. They even made a slightly different version for my son who can't have corn products. Olin (owner) was very accommodating. He even let me "borrow" the kitchen to make my homemade eggnog for my family gathering held elsewhere in the city. My husband, the history buff, found the old photos and newspaper clippings about the building's history very interesting. It's definitely the place to stay if you ever find your self in or near St. Joseph, MO. read more
