It's been tough the last few months due to the over 100 degree days in a row. I lived in Las Vegas for years and when it hit the hundreds I would drive an hour away to Mt Charleston and hike their many trails and the temperature would be around 25 degrees lower. Unfortunately not a place to do this in Oklahoma that I've found yet. Anyway , this was my first time in Edmond and I had read before about this place in nearby OKC. The one thing that worried me was all the comments about the ticks. I hate ticks ! I decided to go anyway , since I was here and of course my spray that I have for ticks and bugs I left at home , I usually have in my backpack that I keep in my truck. Parking lot was good size and had a couple of port o johns. I talked to a fellow patron and he said he's been pretty lucky about not getting ticks and he does the trails often. I have a military like hat I use for hikes and it has a pull out flap that covers your neck , so I put it on and pulled up my socks. A few steps away from the parking lot is a Ranger Station / Visitor Center. They have a small display , but it is pretty good. Some live animals like turtles swimming , snakes , etc. They have a cool display of different insects and an interactive area with a racoon , owl , and such that you push a button to hear them make their noises. The Ranger was there telling some kids and parents about some animals and such. I was told he is very friendly and helpful. They also have several taxidermy animals like a armadillo , skunk , and a racoons eating cracker jacks. There are lots of trees for coverage from the sun. A lookout deck over a pond filled with turtles sunbathing on platforms. I saw a crane also in the water and a large bird flying above like a hawk or buzzard in the distance. They have several short trails and I'm used to doing much longer ones like 8 or 9 miles , these are like 1 or 2 miles. As I started the first one I met up with a couple of deer. A doe and a fawn. The fawn go a little close to me then walked away then the doe came up to me about 6 feet away. I guess some people may be feeding them and that's why they got so close to a human. I came up to another observation deck with a bunch of stairs you can climb up to. There was a couple people on it. I only did 2 short trails due to how hot it was. I would like to come back again when it is cooler. When I got back to the parking lot I took off my hat and checked it for ticks , took off my shirt and did the same , checked my shoes and laces and socks. No ticks thankfully. I will definitely bring my spray next time. I would hate to get bitten by the ones that will make you no longer able to eat meat without getting sick. That would be terrible since I love bbq , fried chicken , and a good steak. I thought Rocky Mounted Spotted Fever was bad , but dang !

The track is a mile and a half long; not too long, not too short. I would consider it to be a lively park! There's always soccer practice among the children, firefighters doing running drills, boot camps, a man preparing his dog to participate in a dog show, softball, baseball, a water park, the YMCA, tennis courts, a playground, birthday parties, all sorts of stuff. It being such a popular park, at times I cannot find parking and that's my only complaint.

It's 2024 not very many people keep cash on them. The lifeguards were continuously blowing the whistles at kids just having fun. Pool is nice to chill in but the management needs work.

This season (2020-21), they also had a snack food truck, a very small ice skating rink, and a couple of touring "trains" to ride for $3 a person. There is definitely more walkable space now than I remember a couple of years back. This is THE metro area light display that puts all others to shame (sorry Midwest City). The nightly line of cars at times backs up all the way onto the highway, but it moves pretty fast. It is likely to get worse as more people move to the metro, and discover for themselves -- this is the place to visit for some Christmas cheer and whimsy! I do have two wants...One, more vertical lights in the trees would be a nice addition. Two, they need better signage or map displays for drivers to find the entrances to separate parts of the park. One can even sponsor their own light display additions. Most are sponsored by local businesses, families and churches. Other sponsors are memorials to dearly departed that loved this annual display. It has become a yearly tradition for my own family, and a must-see Christmas delight.

It shouldn't be closed for a week for the 4th of July and it should be completely cleaned of all debris from the fireworks when it reopens, closing it for other activities limits the time when people are able to use the park for jogging or walking their dogs and I don't think that is right especially if that is something that the park was put there for.

Hidden history, hometown pride, and one very cool rocket ship!…read more After finishing my visit to the Edmond Historical Museum, I stepped outside and realized Stephenson Park was literally next door. Since it was such a beautiful Oklahoma day, I decided to spend some time exploring--and I'm glad I did. This isn't just another neighborhood park. Everywhere you look there's a little piece of Edmond's history. I especially enjoyed reading about the famous Rocket Ship Slide, a playground icon that generations of Edmond kids remember. While the original slide has been retired, the restored rocket display is a wonderful tribute to the park's past. The new playground is outstanding, with plenty of room for children to climb, play, and burn off energy. The walking paths, shade trees, benches, and open green space make it just as enjoyable for adults who simply want to relax. As a retired Air Force veteran, I was especially touched by the "Peace" military monument honoring the men and women who have served our country. It was a meaningful reminder that parks can preserve memories as well as provide recreation. I also noticed the park hosts Thursday evening concerts, and after seeing the setting, I already know I'll be back when the weather cools down. Whether you're visiting the museum, traveling through Edmond, or simply looking for a peaceful place to spend an hour, Stephenson Park is well worth the stop. Sometimes the best attractions are the ones you discover by accident.

I haven't been here in a while and my friends and I decided to go for a walk to get some exercise…read more We got up early and went to beat the heat. It was very nice walking the path in the morning. There were a couple other people up early as well. The path was fairly clean, although we did pass an area where someone threw at least 4 used diapers on the ground instead of walking 40 feet to the trash can. There is not any shade at this walking/ biking path, so bring some sunblock, wear sunglasses, and wear a hat. There are lots of birds and animals to see. We saw some sort of mongoose looking animal that was super cute to watch. He has brown fur and was long and skinny. He was jumping from rock to rock at the lighthouse area. There's a lot of restaurants near the parking area we were at.
