I can't even count the number of times I've driven or walked by the Wheat Sheaf Tavern and been intrigued by their claim of being Toronto's oldest bar. So when I found myself on a recent Tuesday afternoon, I figured I'd better finally stop in. I showed up around 4:30 and the bar was already pretty packed, but luckily for me a couple of people were just leaving and freeing up a spot at the end. Score! I wound up taking advantage of the Happy Hour and grabbing a pint of a very tasty lager. I figured I should probably also have a bite, so I decided to go with the very affordable Taco ("cabbage, chipotle aioli, cilantro, onion, lime") and I got the Marinated Steak option. It's a decent taco. The chipotle aioli is quite tasty and zesty, and the other components, including a very fresh-tasting tortilla, are just as good. The meat was a little questionable, however, as it had a vaguely unpleasant flavor I couldn't quite put my finger on. Still, it was a cheap snack that I ate quite quickly. I had always wanted to check out Toronto oldest pub. It's exactly what you'd expect it to be, a gritty old pub, and I love it! It's a really spacious interior, so it's good for groups or people who want to sit at the bar and watch sports. A nice patio as well, right in the heart of downtown. The food was surprisingly good as well! It has a little something for everyone. I came with a couple of people for lunch and a drink. We were the only ones on the patio while a game was on, but the service was still great. Sometimes you get forgotten out there, but our server was wonderful. read more

He didn't let us in because I showed him my driver's license photo instead of my physical ID. You know you're in a pretty rough dive bar when you show up at 11 AM and it's already a bunch of people drinking BOWDEN sauce and looking sad and lonely... And also none of the ladies bathrooms have locks on the doors so you have to hold the door closed with your foot... I should be taking off if you points for that and also for the point that the bartender literally didn't even know that Ernest Hemingway used to drink here. He used to work for the Toronto Star as a writer and work correspondent and I spent his favourite drinking establishment. How can staff not know that? I was a little annoyed that the server wasn't patient with us as we were trying to fill out the COVID contract tracing information and the network wasn't loading properly. we were seating at the high top tables closeted to king st. the first time i was here was to watch the habs play in the stanley cup finals. that time my visit was a lot more pleasant - it started raining and the wonderful server brought us an umbrella so we could stay dry. my second time (most recent visit) i found the server didn't really care to engage in a conversation with us like she was with others around us, it was almost like what do you want, here you go, bye. I ordered the Mozzarella sticks my friend had the spinach dip and my other friend ordered the calamari. The best part of the Wheat Sheaf Tavern is the location. With clubs and condos all around it, change is a matter of life in the area. The Hoxton across the street closes, yet life seems to go on as usual at the Wheat Sheaf. I went for an early Sunday afternoon gathering which ended up ramming the entire back room area, with everyone having a great time. Most people were standing and milling around. The staff were accommodating and helpful, even taking group pictures for us which was appreciated. When someone said, 'Let's meet at The Wheat Sheaf' everyone knows it and nods. This is a decent pub. It is quite large. You can shoot pool. Pretty good selection of beers. There are TVs around to watch sports. The staff was very friendly and effective. The Sheaf does not need to apologize for what it is. Even though it is currently undergoing a rebrand, Toronto's oldest operating pub is the place to go for wings, beer and a good ol hockey game. It's a classic pub menu (think burgers, nachos, deep fried goodies and their specialty- wings). The place is full of locals and all the servers seem to know them by name. The servers are awesome and really funny actually. I've seen them mostly joking around with the customers no matter how packed or empty the place may get. They're located at King and Bathurst which is a very very busy area full of bars and nightclubs and young 20-30 somethings looking their best on a friday night. The Sheaf is a quiet refuge from the madness of line-ups and cover fees if you want to just have a no-frills night with some friends over beer. I typically don't write reviews, but after the blatant disrespect I experienced last night, I feel compelled to warn others. I'm not surprised to see other reviews mentioning the arrogant behaviour of the doorman. In my time waiting in line, I heard crude and degrading comments made to and about patrons. Even when asked simple questions, his replies would be condescending and dismissive. The worst part? After encountering who we believe to be the manager, it became clear that the doorman is merely following the example set by his superior... The "manager" is abrasive and lacks any kind of professionalism. The behaviour that he encourages and demonstrates himself is simply deplorable. This used to be a gem of a pub I'd love going to for good wings, live music and wholesome fun. I'm so disappointed that it has been tainted by these egotistical bullies. This month they have "Thai Hot Chili flavor" for people who like little bit hot and sour. I'd prefer Hot or Suicide flavors They are spicier and sour , unfortunately, they don't allow us to choose more than two flavors for an order of 20 wings or 30 wings. I ended up ordering 20 naked wings with hot sauce on the side and Thai Hot Chili wings. Then, I added ten more wings with Hot flavor in the end. Four people with 30 wings is not too much, right? I went to the new Wheatsheaf to watch the Raptor's game with some friends. This place was renovated recently. Seems this place is a bit more roomy and there is a small stage. They got rid of the big screen in the main room. I ordered the one pound BBQ dry rub wings and a ginger ale. When it came it only had six wings! This cannot be one pound. The wings were bone dry not juicy at all. So salty and overcooked. The old Wheatsheaf was better. read more

It's definitely unique. Just not sure that it's all that good. The best way I can describe the Wheat Sheaf is that of a cockroach that's survived through a nuclear apocalypse, and then watched as the world rebuilt itself around its general location. This is an absolute dive bar in a high-end neighborhood, which "proudly" bills itself as the city's oldest bar -- and has the decor and smell to match. I can't say I was all that surprised when I first walked in here. Hodgepodge collections of sports memorabilia dot the walls along with random signatures - from former staff members? - while the usual crowd hangs near the back and watches sports games on overhead TVs. The smell in the main bar area is terrible, and the washrooms (what's left of them) made me pine for the visits to Grossman's Tavern just north of there. Broken seats, dim lighting and an impressive assortment of anti-Kathleen Wynne epithets dotted the stall walls. With that said, the value's actually pretty good. My three friends and I shared a huge plate of nachos, two pitchers of Moosehead and a decent-sized bowl of chili for about $17 per person. The nachos are one of the "signature" dishes, and they pile it high with different kinds of cheese, three dips and leave it cooking so long that half of it is embedded with the paper sheet underneath it, Cronenberg's The Fly-style. I would have normally given the visit a three-star rating, but the service brought it down. A waitress (a woman who looked fairly young, but also dressed and styled herself as someone way older, with the tattoo to match) spent most of her time standing at the bar flirting with a customer. When it came time to pay, we had to go over and tell her we wanted to get our bills because she was too wrapped up in her conversation to notice anything else. Maybe that's just par for the course here, but I get the sense that this bar is a bit too laid-back for its own good. Wheat Sheaf is a decent experience, but it can't escape the trappings of its heritage and could stand to have better service. The rice was also burnt - I actually sent it back to the kitchen for a fresh bowl. We ordered Caesars, and both were filled to the brim with ice. The drink was extremely watered down and tasteless. The server was overworked and busy, so it was a 'flag them down' type of vibe. I won't be returning, I expect better quality for the price paid. I was a very very regular Wheat Sheaf customer BEFORE the renovations and I visited the place tonight for the first time since it re-opened and yeah I don't think I'll be back. The wings are kind of ruined... They were completely meh and the wings were the best part of the old Wheat Sheaf. $16 for 6 totally mediocre wings? The service, even with COVID factored in was pretty slow also. Just disappointed as this place is near where I live and used to have amazing wings and fantastic wing specials and now it's just another overpriced mediocre bar with small portions of meh food.
