Whataburger original location in Corpus Christi.
    Jose D.

Eating at the original Whataburger location in Corpus Christi is in itself an experience. Overlooking the Gulf from the second floor is a plus. The ambiance at this place is one of respectful history. There are two stories to this building with an elevator. Food was great! Our food was hot, as I like it! The service is spot on. They come to your table with a tray full of condiments for you to pick out. This is a nice touch. The staff uses the stairs to bring the food. Daily exercise completed. LOL!

It's Whataburger (by the bay!). I normally do not think much of reviews of fast food restaurants. They are always an aggregate poor rating, which is what one could expect of any fast food joint. However, Whataburger has a special place in my big blue Texas heart. And this is a very special Whataburger for many reasons. For one, it is its flagship location in its hometown of Corpus Christi. Secondly, it has a beautiful view of the Corpus Christi Bay! I have always *loved* Whataburger, well before I started eating better. And once I did start eating more selectively (for health), Whataburger was one of the first to start making it easy to order from their menu à la carte. I can now easily get a pile of meat and eggs on the go, and on the cheap! A lot of folks in Texas were up in arms a few years back when it went from local family owned to having sold majority ownership to a Chicago investment firm in a bid to expand. From what I can tell, not much has changed since then with respect to menu or company values. My perspective is the more *Texas* we can spread around the country, the better. Anyway, whether you want to eat better or not, Whataburger is so insanely good. There used to be a debate on whether In-N-Out was a better chain - in my mind, there is a clear champion!

Whataburger is terrible. Order placed at 8:06 and it says order will be ready at 8:18 and i get it at 8:28...

Prime example of how terrible Whataburger is. Order placed at 8:06 and it says order will be ready at 8:18 on the long end. So we arrive at around 8:17 and they take care of the one person at the counter. Then the team members walk away and I am left at the counter until about 8:20 or so and somebody finally helps me and i verify dine in (same as i did on the app). They pull up my order and provide a number and a receipt and i wait until 8: 28 and i ask about my food that was supposed to be ready 10 minutes ago. The lady gets my food that is in bags to go (that was for dine in verified on the app and in person) and apologizes. We proceed to eat our semi warm food and colder burgers with stale buns. I told the wife before we went here this is my final chance on whataburger since this is the "original" one and should be one of the best. However, this location is just as shitty as practically all other locations with me having to wait excessively for food that is not fresh. Born and bred North Texan here and i don't understand the hype. If i were to get fresh food from Whataburger i would like it. The fact this place is more expensive than other fast food places and i consistently get poor quality/temperature/accurate orders than elsewhere. They claim they cook to order but i can say for certain this is not accurate and I am served old and cold (barely warm at best) burgers . In N' Out is far superior to Whataburger. I have NEVER been served food that is not fresh or having good quality ingredients there. I will no longer give Whataburger my business as they make me wait for old/not fresh food.

As a die-hard fan of Whataburger, I was super excited to visit this one. A 2-story Whataburger? Say whaaaat? My boyfriend and I were on a day trip to Corpus and we wanted to try another restaurant for dinner, so we only got Whataburger Jr Combos for lunch so that we won't be too full. The price is higher than other locations but it makes sense, this place is almost like a tourist spot. Food tasted the same, nothing too exciting. The service here is friendly and they're quick to replace drinks when it runs out. If you sit upstairs, there is no tea, only a soda fountain. There's the option of elevator or staircase to access the second level. Overall, it was a cool experience but it wasn't anything too special.

Let's be honest. ..if you aren't a Texan, you probably don't love Whataburger. Those that throw Whataburger in the ring with Shake Shack, INO or Fatburger are smitten with nostalgia. If we pit them against the lower tier fast-food burger joints with drive-thrus, I'm conflicted were they'd rank. Culver's, Portillo's, Steak 'n Shake, Checkers. ..hell even White Castle are all regional and better. I think Whataburger is in the same class as Jack in the Box, Sonic and Krystal's. Each being local favorites. As far as the national chains, I'd probably still opt for Wendy's, DQ & Mickey D's. I may concede BK, but not certain. Burger King was pretty good long ago, but went downhill quickly years ago. The fries, spicy ketchup and shakes kept me from rating one star :-\

TLDR; THE MOST PHOTOGENIC WHATABURGER If you find yourself in Corpus Christi doing the Selena stops then you have to do one of Corpuses. Corpus Christi is the birth place of WHATABURGER and this is the iconic two story WHATABURGER by the Bay. It is a less than 10min walk from the Selena Memorial but aside from that it has seating outside on the second floor that oversees the Bay. If you're going to get WHATABURGER while in CC go out of your way and go to this local. You won't regret it!

Whataburger Founder, Harmon Dobson! Thank you for the hospitality and the amazing goodies!

Whataburger is fresh and delicious and staff are extraordinary and friendly! We love their chicken sandwiches!

Pulling up into the parking lot, we got extremely lucky and saw a few people walking out; otherwise this little parking lot is completely full. The shop itself is also pretty small, basically a hallway down the entire unit, with a bar on the left and a row of small tables on the right. There is some outdoor seating available as well. We ordered lunch to-go, which was pretty quick and easy, as our order was already prepared when I arrived and I was able to use Apple Pay. I noticed their packaging was very nice. We ordered the Philly Cheese w/ pasta salad, the Teriyaki Salmon w/ mac 'n cheese, and also Ahi Tuna sandwich w/ the soup of the day, being broccoli and cheese. My Philly Cheese was tasty, but on the salty side. My bride absolutely loved her Ahi Tuna and the kiddos enjoyed their Teriyaki Salmon. Overall, the food was excellent (but it is pretty pricey). We definitely recommend this spot in you are in the area.

Once we found out where and how to get our food, my goodness, my pork BBQ sandwich is probably the best I've ever had. The pork itself was very tender and excellent when it came to thickness, which was the perfect amount; not too thick, not too thin. However the real star of the show was the bread. It was wanting to stick to the paper because it just couldn't wait for me to devour it. The softness and texture was next level. I have no idea what the hell kind of bread it is, but I need to know just about now. I would definitely come back if I lived here.

I sat at the bar and just ordered a burger, fries, and a couple of beers. The food was actually better than I expected. Fries were hot and crisp, and the hamburger was very good. So high marks for the food. But don't think for a second that the people behind the bar understand that they are in the hospitality business. They're not overtly surly, just totally unresponsive. A smile or words of welcome are simply not in their vocabulary. I'm sure they'd say they're busy, and they do have to handle drink orders from the restaurant. But I was one of only three people having dinner at the bar, so I don't buy it. It's obvious that no one has explained to them that part of their job is to make people feel welcome. And that's on ownership/management.

My parents used to take me to the original location back in the 80s, and it was always a great experience. Back then you stood in line, ordered at the counter, and had more of a self-service experience. I think I still prefer that style over the newer sit-down service, but that may just be nostalgia talking. My son and I stopped in on a late Saturday afternoon while we were out around town digging through vinyl shops. He immediately requested Wallbanger's. Our waitress, Fantasia, was great and pointed out they had a $5 half-order appetizer special during happy hour. We started with mozzarella sticks and chipotle BBQ boneless wings. The mozzarella sticks do seem a little different from what I remember at the original spot, but these were still fresh, hot, gooey, and really good. The marinara they serve with them is great. The boneless wings were solid too, and their chipotle BBQ sauce is one of my favorites. My son ordered the crispy chicken sandwich with that same chipotle BBQ sauce. The sandwich was huge and he ended up taking half of it home to finish later. I went with the Uncle Sam burger, which is a classic burger setup with bacon added. It was very good. Their sidewinder fries are always on point. One thing that deserves special attention here is the bun. They make their buns in house and they're excellent. Fresh, soft, and full of flavor. It's not just something holding the burger together. The bun is part of what makes the whole burger experience work. This place has been part of my family's routine for decades now. I hope it sticks around long enough for a fourth generation of my family to enjoy it.

This place screams modern tourist burger joint. The sort of establishment where every burger arrives with twelve unnecessary toppings, a quirky name, and a price tag that makes you briefly consider checking your credit score before ordering. Quite frankly the place should be renamed "Upcharge Central" or perhaps "Tourist Burgers Built for Photos, Not Stomachs" The outdoor seating itself is lovely though. Proper island atmosphere. Wooden picnic tables, sea breeze rolling through, cold drinks sweating in the Texas heat, tourists waddling about sunburnt and optimistic. It's the kind of setting where you want the burger to absolutely save your afternoon. Unfortunately... Mine did the complete opposite. I ordered their "world famous" Lulu Burger, their take on a jalapeño popper burger, and I genuinely believe it may have been one of the worst burgers I've had in the last couple years. Now look, I'm not against creativity. I enjoy innovation. But somewhere along the line society decided burgers needed to become science experiments. The moment that completely sent me over the edge? A massive slab of cold cream cheese slapped directly onto the burger. Not melted. Not slightly warm. Not blended into the burger. No mate. Refrigerator cold. The sort of cold where you could practically still see the HEB dairy aisle condensation on it. Completely threw off the texture and turned every bite into a confusing mess of hot beef meeting Arctic dairy product. Absolutely criminal behaviour. Now to be fair, my lovely date ordered the Hangover Burger which was noticeably better. Fried egg, bacon, cheesy goodness, all the things you'd expect after a rough Friday evening involving tequila and poor decisions. Still overpriced for what it was, but at least it tasted like somebody in the kitchen had a coherent vision. The sweet potato fries were actually quite decent as well. Crisp edges, soft middle, solid seasoning. No complaints there. Maybe I'm old school. Maybe I'm too particular. But when I think burger joint, my mental checklist is simple: Hot burger. Balanced toppings. Quality beef. Reasonable price. No culinary jump scares. And unfortunately this place missed the mark on several fronts. 3/5. Lovely atmosphere, decent service, and a fun island vibe, but the burgers themselves simply didn't justify the hype or the price tag.
