No idea why I haven't reviewed this LHBS sooner. I don't brew much at all these days, but I was tired of my kegerator being empty so I made some hard Seltzer and got a keg of beer from my local brewery on tap. I needed some hardware and a fresh CO2 tank and the folks at What Ales Ya were, as always, super friendly and helpful. Absolutely the best place in the valley to get brewing supplies, knowledge, ingredients, personal connections in the homebrewing community, etc. W.A.Y has been around forever, and only seems to be getting better. Adam and Allie are both great people who you can tell are very passionate about what they do and won't try to upsell you or get you to buy more than you need. Ingredients are all fairly priced, and come in perfect amounts for your recipe size. In a hobby and world where so much is found online, it's a breath of fresh air to meet and learn from others in person. read more

I firmly believe in supporting local Mom and Pop businesses and I've held off writing this for 3 weeks so I wasn't just responding emotionally. My wife and are long time customers and benefited greatly from Chuck's experience as we assembled our brewing supplies (all from What Ale's Ya). We evolved from kits to to partials, all the while adding more fermenters, corny kegs, taps, a CO2 set up, hoses, equipment, parts, supplies and ingredients. We even met, and spent an afternoon with Adam, Allie and family at one Chuck's Christmas parties where we shared our brews. We had brewed a Stone Cali-Belgique knock-off which Adam really liked and he introduced us the the art of quick cooling that he had rigged. When Chuck told us he was selling to them, we were thrilled! Fast forward...Covid...building a new house.... moving to Surprise... we are finally gearing up to start brewing again. We have a whole room dedicated and sadly unused. 3 weeks ago, was my best friends 50th birthday. He rented an Airbnb to accommodate family and friends from all over. He purchased a keg of Warsteiner from Total Wines not realizing that he needed an A System Tap Coupler (heck, neither did I!) He called me in a panic as he was trying to hook it up to the kegerator we had given him, and we determined what the problem was. Guests were on their way and I told him I had his back. I contacted Total Wines and they only had hand pump adapters and recommended What Ale's Ya. Perfect! Problem solved! I love What Ale's Ya! When I got to What Ale's Ya, there was only one person working and a line to the door. I felt for the poor guy and even let a couple of customers in front of me so I could have his complete attention. I explained my situation and told him that I needed an A System Tap Coupler desperately. He and I walked over to the wall where they have the couplers in boxes and there were none available. While I had been waiting patiently, I had noticed that they had several opened couplers sitting on a shelf between the register and the Yeast cooler. I asked him if there was an A System coupler there? He said, "Yes, but they aren't for sale." I told him I was a long time customer who's referred many other customers and asked him to check with Adam. He called Adam and after some resistance got permission to sell it to me, "as is, at full retail, out of the box, on a shelf and with no promise that it even worked." He handed it to me and said, "Here it is, but there are no returns. If it doesn't work, we will help you with the parts to make it work, but you can't return it because it doesn't work." Other than sitting on a shelf with an $89 price tag and looking unused and with no other choice to help my friend out, I agreed and bought it. I drove back to the party in North Phoenix and prepared to get the Octoberfest pouring! It wasn't an A System coupler! I don't even know if it worked or not! It flat out wasn't what it was told it to be! Needless to say, this was a big disappointment and other beer choices had to be made. Later that week, my wife went to speak with Adam and Allie, who were now both there, and explained what had happened. I wasn't there and can't speak for their tone, but it didn't go well. My wife felt very disrespected and they finally agreed to "give" us a store credit for their error. Needless to say, I am enormously disappointed in how this whole thing went down. I will use up our credit and then I will never refer anyone, or take my business there again. What were they thinking?! Why would they burn a relationship?! read more

We just bought a kegerator for the house and needed a place to fill out CO2 thank. This spot was great! The employee was super knowledgeable about beer making and dispensing and gave us a tons of great tips! There store is very cool and has many options for hops and beer flavoring. Right away made us feel stupid for not being so knowledgeable instead of helping us in the right direction. Told us why we are even here if we don't know what we doing. Won't hesitate to go back. I didn't go there for what most likely would. I went to fill some co2 tanks for my pool. There aren't too many places in the area. I was originally told that I had to be there by a certain time, as they would be closing. Due to traffic, I was about a minute late. Adam, one of the owners, stayed open anyway. At the same time someone else came to also have tanks filled so there was no way he would get to close on time, but he was still smiling. While filling the tanks, he was talking about the business and TV things people could do, including classes to make bottles of wine and of course craft beer. Stayed friendly the whole time, and even though a little higher than someone else, it was worth it, as he would fill my tanks right away as opposed to leaving them and driving back in a day or so to get them. I will certainly be back and maybe for things besides filling my tanks! read more

Super friendly and attentive customer service! My boyfriend is new to brewing and had to pick up some things he needed. Norman at What Ale's Ya helped guide us in the right direction and provided some much needed advice. My husband and I have known Chuck for a few years, he's always friendly and just a great guy!!! I bought a home brewing kit for my hubby for Christmas a few years ago. Since he's loves it and has made several flavors! Every time we go there we deal with Chuck or Norman both very helpful and knowledgeable. They've both had very in depth conversations to show us how and why!!! Then my birthday came and I wanted to make wine. Chuck walked me through all of the steps answered all of my questions. Whether you're a seasoned home brewer needing advice on how to perfect a recipe or a first timer looking for a lesson in how to brew beer, they will be happy to help you out. You can find everything you need to start brewing beer, wine and soda, as well as a full selection of pre-boxed recipe kits as well as all the grains, malt extracts, hops and yeasts to make your favorite batch. They also have a good selection of books and guides. The best investment (and the largest) I've made at What Ale's Ya is their Kegging kit which contains all the equipment to start kegging your own 5 gallon batches of beer. It saves a ton of time and the owner walked me step by step through what seemed like a really intimidating and difficult process, but after his help I'll never bottle my beer again! Prices are reasonable and the service makes this the only place in the valley I'll go to get my supplies now. Okay everyone, I've been doing business with these guys for a little over a year now and have done quite a bit of business with them. So you're probably asking why 4 stars and not 5? Well they don't deserve a 5. As you read through the rest of these reviews, there's a person in this store with a little bit of an attitude. The old man and chuck are cool and willing to help, especially when you grow balls and start experimenting with new recipes or need help. I continue to go back because these 2 guys. I also like small business and the personal touch to that business. I am like some people on here though. I have tinkered with the idea of doing business online as I really don't like the snobbish attitude of the one guy that works there sometimes. Overall they normally have what you need. I hate to be the first place to not love this place, but hear me out. I have been in here a few times recently as I am new to home brewing and I am getting quickly addicted. I don't know nearly as much as I would like to on the subject, but I can't be the only newbie walking into this store. The first time I walked into this store I had a great experience, however this most recent visit was less then satisfying. The gentleman that was helping me seemed very knowledgable but very abrasive. Every question I asked seemed like a burden to him. I appreciate local business and I truly want to support them, but I would rather order my supplies online then deal with the trouble of feeling stupid in the store. read more

I don't know who the young fat guy is with the Mohawk is (who hasn't realized he's not in high school anymore), but he has drawn the last straw for this buyer. I have been in there four times now and dealt with him, and gotten nothing but snobbish attitude from him. Chuck, the owner, is always helpful, but unfortunately is not there a lot. The problem with home brewing, and buying supplies for such, is that occasionally you run into these people. They have all the knowledge and don't feel that they should share that knowledge with up and comers. That guy is exactly that type of person, and the one reason I will be going elsewhere from now on. Today he actually had the nerve to say "We don't recommend that, but if you want, we'll always make a sale." Very disappointed. They have all the supplies you could need for home brewing, and as long as you get Chuck or the other older guy you will be fine, and even have a great experience. There's not a lot of choice when it comes to home brew shops in the valley. My experience is that for the help in the store you either get the highly educated college professor type of brewer who knows everything, has all the answers, but won't share his info / opinion / suggestions with you unless asked a direct question (questions like "I'm brewing a lager what yeast do you suggest" gets met with 15 more questions, no real answers and a roll of the eyes) or you get the newbie extract brewer who has limited knowledge and just got a job at the brew shop to get a pay check and eventually grow his new found hobby into something more. At least I thought this until I met Chuck and the crew down at What Ales Ya. The small shop was a destination to get my CO2 tank filled on a Saturday afternoon. When I arrived they informed me the tank was out of code and would need testing prior to getting filled. Frustrated with the answer given they offered me several different options all of which cost about the same as getting the canister tested. Once settling on an option I realized I was without my wallet. Rather than sending me home for it Chuck let me take the $80.00 canister home and trusted that I would call him later that day and pay for the purchase over the phone. I didn't ask the guys too many home brewing questions but heard a few other customers talking to them about their brewing. These guys are old school original home brewers who have witnessed the craft grow over the last 20 years and know whatever there is to know about home brewing. What Ale's Ya is a great homebrew supply shop in my opinion. My first visit was today and was met by Chuck, the owner. I'm a newbie brew and know just next to nothing about the subject. Chuck is very approachable, friendly and knowledgeable about all aspects of brewing. I explained that I was interested in getting into this hobby and chuck took a half hour of his time explaining the different aspects of the brew process, walked me threw the starter kits, and answered all my questions. I love beer so I started brewing beer. For something like brewing beer I figured and heard that it is worth going to a local homebrew store and getting the down low. What Ales Ya is the closest store to my house about 30 minutes each way. The drive is completely worth it as all other posts here point out. We were greeted as we came in and once I let them know I wanted to start brewing beer their excitement level grew. This business has been sold to new owners... and.... they are freaking awesome!! Adam and his big fluffy cool dog Charlie welcomed me in. Such a great welcoming experience! Nothing against the old owners. I browsed and got what I needed and went to the counter for grains and yeast. Super helpful and super communicative. Got everything I came for and asked about the new ownership arrangement. Everything is the same. All the same ingredients and equipment and gases are available. I always hear about "supporting your LHBS," but this place is overpriced, even when accounting for shipping charges. I spent about double the online price for an 8oz bottle of starsan when I realized I'd run out on a brew day. The staff are also rude / condescending. I went in looking for PET caps once and got grilled with questions, to which I explained that glass is not allowed in parks. He asked me why I can't bring something else and I had to tell him I'm not looking for advice and it's not up to him to decide if I should drink commercial beer or my own beer when I choose to go hiking or go to the pool. read more

Just had a terrible experience with the chubby kid with freckles. Went to purchase a beer brewing kit that he tried to overcharge me on. When I asked why my total was so high, he responds with it is higher in the system. When asked about honoring the price that was clearly marked on the item, I was told that he "wasn't going to drop the price because of somebody's finger slip". I chose not to buy the item and he was a total asshole to me with his genius responses such as "awesome man" and "fine with me". Sounds like these people should reevaluate who they hire on. FYI: they work on at least a 100% markup (confirmed) so the "mismarked" price would have still been profitable by quite a bit. I would have purchased if it wasn't for the pompous attitude of the staff. Recommendation: do yourself a favor and find another shop/source read more

Went here 2 weeks ago because I got a beer starter kit and wanted to see what all I needed to get a batch going and plus I needed to buy bottles and caps. When I went into the store the man with the grey handle bar mustache was pretty insulting right off the bat. I said to them, hey I got this beer brewing kit from Target and he stopped me right there and said, " Ya a Mr. Beer, I am familiar with it" in a very condescending attitude. Before I could even ask another questions he continued by saying, "Let me say you are going to get mediocre beer at best, OK beer. We here are brewing the best beer on the planet if you want to brew good beer you need to get something different, but a Mr. Beer is an ok place to start to see if you like it." I was pretty insulted by this and at that point didn't want to spend a dime at that store but I really needed the bottles and the were the only local place I knew I could by them and the cappers. Well one case of bottles (24) and one manual capper and 400 bottle caps was over $40. So not only did I get poor service, but it cost an arm and a leg. I have already bottled one batch and started brewing another. This time I was smart and went on online and was able to get 1 lb of priming sugar ($6.99), 1 case of bottles and caps (16.99) and it was less than $30 shipped to my door. I really wanted to be able to support local business like this but with this type of attitude it is hard. Hopefully they will realize that if you want to be successful you are going to need to be a little more welcoming to the newbies because they are the future of your business. read more

Chuck is awesome! Extremely helpful, kind and will talk to you and help you experiment with new brews. The store has everything you need. It is more expensive than online, but when you get to talk with Chuck, it makes it well worth the extra price, plus it keeps my money local. The 3 stars is because every time I am in there and am helped by one of Chuck's other employees, they are abrasive and talk to me like brewing beer is beneath me. I have friends who brew who've experienced the same thing there. I really want to keep shopping locally, but I'd rather not deal with that type of treatment. Chuck, as much as we enjoy shopping with you and keeping it local, we hope you get some better help soon so we can continue. read more

My husband wants to start brewing his own beer. He has already tried mead but he knew that he needed to gain some more knowledge. He searched the internet and found What Ale's Ya and asked me to accompany him on his trip. While we drove there he decided to try brewing beer this time instead of mead. Immediately when we walked in we were greeted by Norman. My husband told Norman his plans to brew beer and he didn't hide the fact that he is still very new and needed help. Norman literally gave him step by step instructions and set him up with a home brewing kit, bottles, recipe, pot and two other things. He also gave him some further printed instructions and told him he can call them if he had any questions. This meant a lot to my husband and I know he left feeling more confident and happy knowing that there is a place to go to for help and guidance. Norman was super sweet and we had a great time talking to him. The store itself has a lot of supplies and I was impressed with what all they have to offer. We plan to go back for sure!
