I have to say that I've been to a lot of Wetherspoon's pubs over the years and this one comes out tops!

The quirky decor, though faux, is appealing if you like chandeliers, Victoriana (likely from China), and stuffed stag heads. Music is a quite loud speakeasy playlist. Lots of menu options, from tapas to burgers with a gastro pub range of mains. Nice cocktail list too, and they have a gluten free menu - though sadly, as everywhere else, the only gf pudding is sorbet. Service seems fine, and they serve meals all day from 9am to 10pm, and breakfast is served til 6pm! There are a lot of stairs, though there's a lift to the first floor to get you started. The main restaurant is only open Fri, Sat, Sun in winter, but you can eat in the first floor cafe/bar the rest of the time. There is a third floor dining area with terrace for summer, which we did not explore in January! The food is very serviceable if not exactly a gastronomic experience. We had excellent game stew, with lots of chunky pheasant, venison and rabbit. The promised root vegetables in the stew were a bit few and far between, but it came with champ (mash and spring onion), and was gluten free. Dessert was chocolate croissant bread and butter pud, with fine vanilla custard (for me) and (good quality) mango and blackcurrant sorbets for my GF partner. A rum based espresso martini to finish. So dinner with two courses, and drinks was fifty quid for two, which is pretty reasonable. So, definitely will be back, and we recommend it.

The Hop Inn - Tea is served.

Terrible service. Waitress had a very bad attitude, not helpful at all…read more Fish and Chips £12.95: grease Fish, grease Chips. It came with 2 mushy pieces of white bread not toasted. The Peas look like they came straight from the freezer to your plate, very bland with no taste whatsoever. I left the peas and the mushy bread untouched in my plate. The Calamari was £5.95 and it came with only 5 small grease rings. Very bad experience, too expensive, I do not recommend this place to anyone. One star is way too many. I will never come back.

It's a bar I know, but somewhere I was smelling a strong smell of old cigarette butts. Tea served, a, ok. Took a good while, breakfast was served, I ordered a full English breakfast, but you can also get a BIGGER version, I would have ordered this if I had known, but in the end, I am glad I didn't. Came with the toast well buttered, too much for me, but nice they buttered the toast. My food other then the sausage was just warm at most. Bacon was cooked, but not hot, my fried potato thing has a strong taste of onions, yet no onions on my order. Tomato was grilled, but cold in the center. I am guessing it was not all cooked at once and got cold before it was served. Between my and my food, it was a 20 minute wait, way too long for something that should take 5 minutes. Service: only at thre bar, and delived to thre table and that was it, no check up to see if every thing was okay.

As a carnivore I loved the choice of meats, sides and sauces for an affordable, enjoyable full Sunday roast we didn't have to cook at home. However I wouldn't be able to bring my vegetarian family members and boyfriend here again as there was nothing except dry vegetables for them to eat - upon asking if a certain item contained meat we were informed 'probably not', not exactly reassuring! I know traditional carvery restaurants are supposed to be all about the meat but many do provide vegetarian options so families can enjoy a meal together, something that would be ideal here. Be sure to book in advance on Sundays or bank holidays as it can get very busy.

Prior to arrival I spoke to Angela who was very helpful and had no issues with my partner and I checking in early before attending a wedding which was a great help. The staff and owners were friendly and polite on arrival. I checked in quickly and ascended the stairs (no lift so not suitable for people who require disabled access) to my room. We had room 3 which was the four poster suite, it was very spacious with a good size en-suite bathroom. Despite the dated decor the room was bright (lots of big windows) and airy and as well as the four poster bed had a living room area with a sofa, table, arm chair, side table with tea/coffee and biscuits, tv and magazines. The room also contained a dressing table/draw and chair, wardrobe, two dressing gowns, a second arm chair and bedside tables. The bathroom was spacious and had white fluffy bath sheets and hand towels and consisted of a fill size bath would shower overhead. Sadly the water temperature was a little temperamental and the shower had no pump so the pressure was weak but was adequate for a quick wash. The room was spotless and the only parts of the room which need attention due to feathers, dust and cobwebs is under/behind the bed and the top frame of the bed but other than that the room was spotless. We needed an iron the morning of departure which was quickly delivered to our room however no ironing board was available so we had to use the table which wasn't a problem for us. The hotel does not offer breakfast but there is a pub restaurant which offers lunch and dinner. There's a small car park right outside and a little seating area/front garden where you can enjoy the sunshine. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would stay again.
