Lakeside has retained the marine lake to perform numerous wet sports activities such as canoeing and yachting, kayaking, wind surfing and raft building. There are now lots of dry activities also available: cycling climbing and orienteering and a well appointed fitness suite. Lakeside welcome disabled and special needs visitors and people of all abilities. The facilities here are undeniably good and quite unique to the area; an invitaion for tourists and a great boost for the local economy. There is on site accommodation at "Lakeside Lodge", 14 en suite bedrooms with all guest requirements; even more incentive to visti from further afield. On a hot Tuesday we decided to head for the Lakeside Bistro (within the activity centre) for a cold drink and a bite to eat. The décor is modern and clean and the food is extremely well priced, we got two meals and two drinks for less than £7! I had no complaints about the bistro or its service, some of the other diners may have been less content. At one point the kitchen was temporarily closed so it could deal with a back log of orders and the large queue of hungry beach goers looked decidedly put out. The bistro looks out onto its stunning surroundings and also onto the fantastic children's play area, from which my fiancée had to hold me back.

There are 4 badminton courts available in the sports hall which is bright and spacious for groups. However, the floor could be more solid. In terms of the gym, this is one of their better features. Though small, it still has all the usual apparatus you would expect a gym to have. If you love football, then here is a good place to come as they have a large synthetic football turf with real size goal mouths. There is even a stand for spectators to cheer you on! As a whole, this sports centre ticks most boxes when it comes to your fitness needs. They offer classes too which is always popular with the locals. In addition, they have a nice little cafe on the ground floor so you can sit down and relax once you've finished.

Therefore I took their gym induction to give a look at the place and at the machines. The gym is ok, not very big to tell the truth. I was actually rather disappointed with the induction itself, cause it lasted only five minutes, the instructor just hastily showed us the rooms, we didn't even have time to try any machines. Also, we were more than ten people taking the induction, and I was expecting something more serious and personalized since I was paying for it.

This isn't too expensive, especially when it's split between the two of us. The one thing that annoys me here just a tiny bit is the fact that you have to pay 20p for a locker and you don't get it back. It's quite cheeky to get you to pay for the privilege of having your stuff safe whilst you're exercising. Surely, after membership and court hire, that should just be a given.

Well, thats me shot then- I am quite happy pumping some iron in my velour tracksuit bottoms from Primark that have seen better days and my faded Superman vest top, but this will not do at David Lloyd, oh no! The receptionists here are a little scary, they remind me of my Home Economics teacher at school who would take no-nonsense from anybody and gym members give audible sighs of relief when they get past these formidable gatekeepers. The gym itself is gorgeous and the facilities are unparalleled. There are 8 indoor and 4 outdoor tennis courts, 4 badminton courts and 3 squash courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a kids' splash pool. The gym is large and full with the latest gym equipment but I find its open plan layout slightly intimidating. You almost feel like a dressage pony on display as you battle the stepper but you can distract yourself with the tv screens dotted around. The wet facilities are superb and I have to admit, I will work out for 30 mins but spend three times as long in the lovely steam room, sauna and whirlpool jacuzzi. David Lloyd is all about the changing rooms; totally gorgeous and clean, they have hairdryers and you don't have to risk electrocution or embarrassment by sticking your head underneath an awkward hand dryer. This is not just a gym, it is a day out! The restaurant is great and you can undo all your good work and have a tasty sandwich or larger lunch if you fancy. There is an internet cafe and a tv lounge to relax in, and a hair and beauty salon- this is a posh home away from home. There is a great creche with lovely staff to mind your cherubs( for a fee of course) and I would totally endorse it. There has to be a but though hasn't there? The "but" here is the membership fee- it is a pricey deal here and I will not lie that you can go abroad for the same amount as the gym's annual fee. My quote for full membership was nearly £900 a year and although there are several levels of membership packages- a useful 3 month flexible membership has caught my eye- you are over paying for the privilege of this place. Posers paradise, stunning sauna, cracking changing rooms and amazing atmosphere is David Lloyd in a nutshell.

The life guards are almost never on duty even when the weather is amazing and you feel like using the outdoor pool. As others have stated it is a posers palace but not the clean nice place that others think it is. If the reception on 5* then they must think premier inn is a five star hotel. Facilities are basic and not in great shape and whole place is tried. During COVID things have gotten much worst and therefore I'm staying away from what now must be COVID central. Low standards of hygiene and have just been informed that air con is not working and the spa is closed due to technical issues. £168 a month for a family of 3 and most of it is off limits. No thank you.

An outdoor and indoor pool, a range of classes, well equipped gym and studio rooms, personal trainer, 20% discount for Village accommodation, 10% discount for the spa and restaurant, free wristband that locks the locker so no need for coins or locks... certainly not something you come across everyday! I've has experience with a range of gyms in different countries, and the Village very cheap yet high quality, which is great. The staff are very friendly and the gym is kept clean. The wristbands for the lockers are pretty cool as well. They work like a sensor, so you just touch this machine to unlock, then pick a locker and press the button with the sensor part of the wristband and it locks. It's rubber and hence waterproof as well, which is very convenient and secure. Most of gym equipment is new and everything as a tv screen and internet to watch youtube etc. The negatives are that the pool is crowded and full of kids most of the time. There are no lanes and the adult swim times are very limited, so I would not recommend it for any serious or pro swimmers out there. Another thing is the cycle machines peddles and very far back than usual so it puts a lot of pressure on the knees and their didn't seem to be a way of adjusting the seat backward or forward. There are also only 3 bikes, but like 20 treadmills and cross trainers... I guess those machines are more popular in general. Overall: Cheap membership prices, good quality gym with 2 pools and various discounts attached.

Nice, bright and airy building with loads of space to climb or even just watch others climb. Couldn't find a traverse wall anywhere but the place is so big I may just not have seen it. A small gear shop if your need some new shoes or trousers and a membership desk come coffee shop as you enter with a large viewing platform built on top. Hopefully they will have a monthly standing order membership though as not sure how NY have the money spare to pay for a yearly membership even though that is the most economical way to climb if you're keen.

Lifestyles Alsop is the newest leisure facility in the city which opened in 2007. The facility boasts a state-of-the-art fitness suite offering more to its members and the local community, 25 metre swimming pool, cricket nets and a large sports hall catering for many sporting activities. The centre also offers free access to all Liverpool students up to the age of 17 under the 'Futures' scheme playing a vital role in the community, bring local people together, and improving health and fitness to all ages. Although it is a compact place, I would definitely recommend a swim here, especially if you've got kids as they will love a splash. The centre has a welcoming feel to it and is a breath of fresh air compared to some of the more dated leisure centres within Merseyside.
