When we came to Waterworks, my 10 year old was literally doing the back float and turn by himself by like the 2nd or 3rd class. My 6 y.o. was loving the water now and doing back floats as well. They learned really quickly in this environment and loved their coach, Brenda. We had other ones as subs, and they were all great, but they really took to Brenda and her coaching. Now all they want to do is swim and it's definitely thanks to Waterworks.

My daughter started lessons with very little confidence in the water, and thanks to Cynthia's patience, encouragement, and incredible teaching skills, she is now not only swimming but truly loving it! Cynthia has a natural gift with children--she made each lesson fun, engaging, and perfectly tailored to my daughter's pace and comfort level. What impressed me most was her ability to balance safety, skill-building, and fun all at once. My daughter would light up before every lesson and leave the pool beaming with pride. Thanks to Cynthia, my daughter has developed strong swimming skills and a newfound confidence that will stay with her for life. We're so grateful for the care and dedication Cynthia brings to her work. She's a true gem and a major asset to Waterworks! Highly recommend her to any parent looking for a kind, skilled, and passionate swim instructor!

But this past summer was a bad experience all around. I believe they also have a new director. My son likens her to Ms Trunchbull in Matilda. He witnessed counselors shoving kids, literally shoving them to get in line. My son was also physically hit by a counselor. Of course they can't verify it and other counselors didn't witness it or won't say. Both my wife and I experienced his counselor as extremely petty, without any sense of training, and badgering kids when they don't fit her personal preferences (rather than some value or rule of the camp). The YMCA is an already dated and dying institution. This is going to seal the deal very soon.

I looked long and hard for a school that fit my daughter's and my needs. I wanted somewhere with caring instructors and a place where my child felt at peace and happy during the learning process. If you are looking for the same, this is the swim school for you! I could go on and on about how pleased I have been with the lessons but I also would like to make special note of the customer service here as well. I have emailed and chatted with almost every swim school in LA, in fact I even had my daughter at another 5 star rated swim school on Yelp. Honestly, the previous school doesn't hold a candle to HAW! Head Above Water REALLY takes a personal approach to their business. The people I've spoken with have been amazingly professional, including the school's owner. The instructor gives me tips after each lesson with things I can do at home to build on the skills she has taught in class. Several other moms I know are attending this school as well and have found that the teacher not only works wonderfully with each child but is great about talking to parents and giving them pointers and encouragement. I cannot say how pleased I am with this experience and tell everyone I know about it.
