I graduated here in 1987. I went back in 2011 and told the students a lot has changed: "Western used to have lockers, a smoking area, a salad bar, archery, Driver's Education, and white people." They would then laugh and point to the white kids, usually a Zach, Holden, or Madison. We had "International Day" way back then, but it was pretty weak: white folks trying to flaunt their 12.5% Irish or Italian ancestry. Now EVERY single day is International Day at Western. Alumnus Tiger Woods alone was International Day. I hate political correctness. Orangeview Warriors changed to the Panthers, and Western wasn't always the Pioneers. Prior to 1957, they were the Eskimo Hunters. Look it up. It could be true. We had the best cheers. "W! W! E-S-T! E! E! E-R-N!". What's that spell, the cheerleaders would ask. Wwesteeern. It spells Wwesteeern, people. This illiterate cheer was obviously before Western became a two-time Distinguished School. So, per my alma mater, I will always remember dear ol' Western. Basketball is the sport that I love. My sophomore year (2002), with my growth spurt being delayed, at only 5'3, weighing close to 110 lbs and wearing glasses, the basketball coaches didn't believe in me, not even my PE teacher, who was also the football coach at the time. Like most of the world, they only saw my outer shell. On the exterior was a scrawny Korean kid, but deep inside was a kid that had more to prove than anyone else. I got excited when I heard tryouts were being held for the basketball team. I would think about it day and night. I lived and breathed basketball. During tryouts, while I poured my heart and sweat, I tried to stand out, but failed miserably. For two days, I held on, for something I wanted desperately. It was the only chance I got. The last practice ended with a scrimmage. Right before the try out scrimmage began, two captains had to choose their teammates. All of us were lined up in a horizontal line. One by one, people beside me were chosen. I ended up being chosen last and still today, I remember that incident as if it were yesterday. My name never made the list. But that didn't stop me from playing the game. I loved the game so much that I woke up every morning just to shoot around and work on my game. Near the end of a shoot around one day, rain started to drizzle and cooled off my sweating body and I asked myself, "What if?". That same question raced through my mind throughout the years, but playing and just getting better was the only way of coping. In college, I eventually went on encountering those people who were on the high school team. I would remember them dominating over me at that time. They were bigger and stronger. It made it that much more sweet, when I did the same to them. While their motivation was gone, mine was still burning with passion. In life, we tend to fail miserably to reach our goals. But those failures, make us stronger. We just have to find the right failure to use it as healthy motivation. There was light at the end of the tunnel for me when I had teacher who at the same time was a leader. A leader that not only listened, but cared at the same time. Although there weren't many, she was that one teacher who was down to earth and one of the most genuine people that I have ever spent 2 years with. She was my foundation. Mrs. Parikh, I thank you for shaping me to be the person I am today. Most of the guys who made the list eventually went on quitting the team the next year. I went to see a football game at Western high School on 10/11/2018. It was my 2nd time there. The Katella Knights defeated the Magnolia Sentinels by the score of 60-0 (double ouch!). Parking was free as was the program. Entry was $5.00 (for a Sea Rebel). It was Senior Night for Magnolia. Plus, I took photos. read more

Yeah. i can say i learned nothing as in the academic sense here, however, i don't think thats the point of High School. in retrospect. In my own experience, i took the bull by the horns here and did everything i could to become a part of the campus rather than the schoolwork which was pretty easy to me. I was a part of a bunch of clubs and organizations. and it enriched my life as well as took a big chunk of my social life as well as gave me a big part of my social life. i did the sports stuff here. though Tennis doesnt get that much publicity but theyre pretty good. the faculty here.... some are really good in my days and some were unfit to teach. [bonilla] she should be fired. honestly the worst teacher next to Vicente who was fired already. she does not have a program to teach and she teaches according to her mood swings or appetites. i think the best program here is the english program. all nurturing and helpful. and very very tactful and relateable. not all of them are dinosaurs. and some are younger than we think. the diversity level at this campus was pretty diverse however there was an overwhelming hispanic population but thats given being in southern California. i think the levels of diversity were pretty spread out for other races. the Student run organizations and clubs and groups are pretty good considering theyre all teenagers. like i was. it taught me personally valuable lessons of life, networking, and people skills. but though not everyone can join all those clubs that i did and were those little uniforms of the organizations, its good to be a part of something whether your not you are sensitive or creative because you can get as creative as you want in respect to the administration, rules and constraints of a curriculum. the art program was amazing when i left it. mathematics was to be desired but if your kid is pretty academically outgoing, there are AP classes to get them going. uhm..... the student body programming can be really fun if you keep an open mind, you are in high school, it doesnt get any better. security is alright. they are pretty much on their game at all times. the campus itself is a fairly small population comparable to other schools outside our region. the environment is light and casual and refreshing. the administration..... thank god they keep changing. the school pride and parental inclusion is pretty high depending on how you want to be involved in your students education, as you should be. but my parents were usually laissez faire and i turned out okay? hopefully. going into my senior year at UCSD, Aspiring to go to Art school sometime soon in NY. i think creativity was nurtured here. i think as a slacker, i did pretty well, learned some, and gained an experience i'm pretty proud of at WHS. go Pios! they need ot let the students have off campus lunches. there are so many fast food places that could make so much more money!. read more

I was looking up my school's website and stumbled upon our yelp page. I have taught Art here at Western for the past 14 years. Reading through the comments I feel like our school is not properly represented! Western has some of the most caring and innovative teachers in the district. I would not want to teach anywhere else. I love our many clubs on campus, our ASB's school spirit, our unique international week, the administration's openness to community art projects, the capstone portfolio project and the overall compassion that I see from our students. I would send my own children here. (Side note: I do ask my students to donate $10-$20 for a year of quality art supplies. They also get to take all their artwork home so I feel like its a great deal!). read more

As a person who spent six years on the Western High campus, two years in Junior high, four years in senior high during the graduality from one to the other, I do not recall the school's nickname to have been anything other than "Pioneers." Until the PC police arrived to make more acceptable changes, there was a continental musket exchanged between Anaheim High and Western, depending upon which varsity team won the annual contest between footballers. Sometime later, the less militant bell was introduced. Says a lot about the quality of the school's leadership as the teachers and staff, members of Tom Brokaw's Greatest Generation (grew up during the Great Depression, endured much deprivation and hardships, fought and won the Second World War--and paid for it--Some fought in the Korean War--came home, entered and completed college, many became teachers, by whom I was one of those privileged to have been instructed) aged and retired, to be replaced by a lesser breed. The first group of instructors had all been tested in the fires of a world conflict, survived, and engaged in a noble profession determined to instill their perceptions of knowledge, experience and character--and class subject material---into the receptive vessels of the children of their generation. They were an incredible lot, those teachers and administrators of the fifties and sixties. I gave them my share of concern, and I regret not one minute of it. read more

I never learned anything here! All I learned is that this has got to be the most dramatic and worst school in the whole Anaheim District. They have a super dangerous environment, teachers with rotten attitudes, students without manners, and disgusting cafeteria food. Best find a spot on the ground since that's where you'll be eating your lunch for the year! And forget about friends. The students often get out of hand and break into fights every day. The faculty does a really horrible job at preventing them for the sake of the students' safety. There's always the need for the police to get involved. Parents, you might want to reconsider sending your child to this school. This place is hell on earth and I wish goodluck to anyone attending -especially incoming freshmen. With my younger brother going into his first year of highschool, I really fear for him. read more

Trying to register at this poorly run school is a nightmare! No signs to give you any idea what long line to stand in under the hot sun for half an hour. One solitary woman looking up each kid in her papers. What was the point of registering online?? Teachers should teach, and business people should run the school because it couldn't be any more inefficient. I stayed in Anaheim for a short Time, had my daughter attend this school and took her out within a year because this school is nothing but money hungry and unfair Teachers wanted money all the time for paper,etc in which my daughter never needed because I supplied her supply's and more. A couple times I got a letter asking for donations, I did not donate because I live on a tight budget, before I knew it, those donations became bills so to speak! Was told I needed to pay for this and that! I never paid a penny! Schools are not supposed to scam people of money when they are responsible for that stuff. Of course I understand my daughter needed things, I made sure I took care of that!, therefore I should not be charged.... Then their fund raisers are a joke! Who sells mattresses?????? What happened to candy or simple things!?! My daughter was told if she didn't attend the fundraising event her grades were gonna drop!!!!!!!!! Not only that, this was when we had a heat wave and it was extremely hot outside, I did not let her attend because one its unfair they make threats to affect her grades when that should never be so, and it was scorching hot! How dare you threaten students on their grades! So, you're forcing my kid to sell something nobody wants to buy in the first place, come on, there's so many other things and cheaper things at that you could sell. Then one of her teachers demanded the students wear a certain outfit and color to an event THE NEXT DAY!!!!!! No time to shop, she wore what she had, I'm sorry, don't demand such thing and expect it when its last min! Not happening! Also one teacher I am told by my daughter did not teach!!!! Pretty much let the kids run the class, my daughter wanted to learn, but the teacher always got angry and threw fits leaving the students on their own. Much more but I've wrote enough.........I had enough of these crazy money hungry looneys.......My daughter came home with bizarre stories all the time! As I was taking her out of that cult, they asked her to pay up for things such as using a copy machine, etc. I told them to keep dreaming because I'm not giving them a dime! When I graduated from Western High School in 1971 it was a well respected High School and I was proud to attend it as were most of my younger brothers and sisters. Today if I had children of high school age with what I have seen of the old school I would move out of the area to get my children into a better school. Sure there have been some high profile graduates from Western, Andy Messersmith and Tiger Woods being only two of the ones I know of. But today the school has gone down hill and the campus seems to be a joke. Proud to have graduated but ashamed of the school now. read more

Wasn't happy when Western's Freshman #50 played dirty by tripping and blocking in the back a Pacifica H.S, Freshman. It appeared to hurt the Pacifica player. Thought we were better than that at Western. Shame on us. read more
