This is the second death our family has experienced in the last few months and costs are unfortunately, of great concern. We were looking for a simple cremation for our loved one and we met with BrIan Hahn at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home. We did not have an appointment and were only in town for a couple of days. Brian dropped everything to meet with us and although we were not able to use his company's services, he was generous, compassionate and thoughtful. Super fascinating to walk around and see these head stones, and the history. A lot of the head stone were craved in Boston as there wasn't any head stone engraving in Maine. Once the head stone was done, they had to be shipped up by boat. You will see and learn about the different sections of the cemetery. The rich, the working class, and the poor. One section was interesting as it was like a vault where they just piled the bodies in. A smaller section where they had stairs. So they would remove the sod, the boards, and stairs would appear and you'd walk down the stairs to the vault. Our tour guide Jeff described head stone details, what the markings meant. And how an apprentice would practice on the bottom of a head stone before engraving the phrases. If he messed up, it was okay, because that bottom part was going in the ground anyway. It was all pretty cool. Even if you're not into cemeteries, it was a good place to learn the history of the oldest cemetery in Maine. And it is Halloween day. Think it's a good place to be

A social worker at Gosnell Hospice highly recommended Casco Bay Cremation, so I expected my…read moremother's cremation to be handled with care and professionalism. However, I was very disappointed. These are my main grievances: 1. Despite instructing us to arrive 15 minutes early, Jeff was 5 minutes late to the cremation, and my entire family stood outside and waited for him. 2. The viewing room is only accessible by walking through the staff break room. It felt intrusive and awkward to pass through. 3. The final goodbyes to my mother were rushed and uncomfortable. The staff was dressed very casually (T-shirt and leggings) and it felt like they wanted us to wrap it up so they could leave. 4. I had to reach out to Jeff to ask when and where I could pick up my mother's cremains and death certificates. 5. Jeff mixed up my father's middle name, Ching, and my grandmother's middle name, Hwa, on the death certificate after I spelled it out for him twice. 6. Their office felt like a storage closet, and Jeff's associate brought a toddler when I received my mother's cremains. For these reasons I do not recommend Casco Bay Cremation.
