I did decompression for 4 months with Dr. Jonathan Donath. It did absolutely nothing. Dr. Donath is a smooth talker and a good charmer, but his method didn't work for me. Why am I so angry? He GUARANTEED verbally that this would bring me back to 100%. And the best was when he wanted me to do a video testimonial for him when I wasn't even better. He was ready to put a camera in my face and have me plug his business when I was still in pain. When I didn't see him, his assistant put me on the machine. It all started with a heavy metal trashcan falling on my left foot and crushing one of the joints in the big toe when I was a kid. Years later, I had to have surgery to fix the joint. There was some relief, but not completely. I had been putting more weight on my uninjured right foot, and more stress. This caused not only a funny walk, but pain and discomfort in my back, shoulders, knees, and neck. I had been in pain and discomfort for nearly two years, even AFTER months of post-surgery physiotherapy. Painkillers really mess with my stomach, so I was asking family and friends for tips and looking on the internet for alternatives. I had heard of chiropractors before but, like most people, I had some negative stereotypes about chiropractic work and was skeptical. Ironically, I found Dr. Donath by looking on Yelp! There were so many positive reviews that I decided I had to try it. Well now I'm leaving a review and saying that I am so glad that I took the leap. Whatever stereotypes you have heard about chiropractors is totally not true, at least when it comes to Dr. Donath and his team. I had a complicated set of complaints, and from the first appointment I was so well taken care of. I was treated both by Dr. Donath and his colleague Dr. Marshall who are both patient, friendly, and easy to work with. You can tell that they actually really do genuinely care. I never felt rushed, and in many ways the treatments felt like a combination of physiotherapy, stretching, and adjustment work. Both Dr. Marshall and Dr. Donath also have additional training that most chiropractors don't have! They use a variety of treatment methods to get the best results. I am feeling so much better, and it only took about two months of treatment. It really is incredible. And what is great is that both Dr. Donath and Dr. Marshall took the time to educate me on how to prevent certain injuries again (how to have better posture, getting out of bed the correct way to prevent too much pressure on the spine etc!). I also found them to be very affordable, they worked with my insurance and the co-pays were lower than I expected. They even worked with me so I could get a new custom-made pair of orthotic inserts for my shoes which have helped to improve my posture even more! Having visited other chiropractors, in the past, I can say that Dr. Donath's professionalism, compassion and efficacy is remarkable. I'm 30, a mother of two and in great health. suddenly, overnight, I was in some of the most severe pain I have ever experienced. Towards the end of August 2010, I was involved in a freak accident. I fell out of a golf cart and was left with a large bruise on my leg and various cuts and scratches. As it turned out, these injuries were the least of my problems. In the coming weeks, I woke up each morning with severe pain running down the outside of my left leg. The pain was constant and ultimately made its way down to my calf and then my ankle. I was willing to try anything to make it stop. After a friend recommended that I try acupuncture, I read some online reviews and then headed to Manhattan to give it a try. I found that acupuncture gave only fleeting relief, and it did not even temporarily address the piercing sensation I felt each morning. After trying several other options (including cupping, pain medications and even infomercial items), I googled all sorts of remedies. It all started with numbness and tingling in both thighs at the beginning of my second trimester that eventually escalated to a burning, stabbing, painful sensation. It was my right thigh at first that made it impossible for me to sleep at night. Over time the right became good and my left became significantly worse. I felt hopeless! I did countless hours of research online and found that very few women experience the same symptoms and this condition was called meralgia parasthetica. When I stood for a too long, I'd experience the most painful sensation, a burning pain that intensified and ended with a snap, almost as if a blood vessel broke somewhere in there. I talked to my doctor but he said there isn't anything that can be done and it will go away when the baby is born. I did not know what to do to ease the pain. I have only great things to say about Dr. Donath and his staff. I was treated for a herniated disc in my L4/L5 region. The recommended treatment was spinal decompression. Efficiency Dr. Donath and his staff are professional and efficient. There was no wait time for appointments, I was promptly seen at my scheduled times. My billing options were communicated and I was welcome to ask additional questions. Comfort From Dr. Donath's partner Dr. Rambarat, to his medical assistant and his office manager, Dr. Donath's staff is warm, friendly knowledgable and helpful. I felt very comfortable and welcome in their care. When necessary, they worked to alleviate my anxieties with an open willingness to explain even the most obscure or minute detail of my treatment. Care Dr. Donath was contentious about every aspect of my care. When we met initially, he questioned and he listened. He recommended an MRI and after seeing my results, he explained and illustrated to ensure that I fully understood my condition. He clearly communicated my options, providing additional literature for me to review. He also gave me a set of activity guidelines (icing the back, how to bend, lift, get out of bed etc.) to follow in order to ensure a successful outcome, given the experimental nature of the treatment. He also prescribed a back brace and supplements for the duration of my treatment. Once treatment began Dr. Donath closely monitored how I felt by asking me questions in every session and even calling my home to inquire about my condition after treatment. Results Based on my injuries, Dr. Donath told me that it will take about a year for me to be one hundred percent back to normal. As of now, my treatment began roughly 6 months ago. As far as results go, I'll speak comparatively to the baseline of that time period. Before I began treatment, everyday was a struggle. I would start the day feeling a dull aching pain and by the end of the day, I was barely able to walk or sit up. I found it difficult to bend, to get out of bed (the act of sitting up was literally excruciating), I most certainly could not run or swim and driving was a nightmare (bumpy roads were my worst enemy!) I began to feel results after the first few treatments but after a weekend of sneezing I had a setback. While I was alarmed and frustrated, Dr. Donath was not. He reminded me that this treatment is "one step forward, two back" so some days would be good, and others would be challenging and anything - including sneezing, coughing and the weather would affect that. It took a little while, but as treatment progressed, my 'good' days began to outweigh the bad and eventually I'd go a week with no pain, then two weeks etc. My intensive treatment (multiple times per week) officially ended in July (four months in). Over the last two months I've been treated only twice and I have to say that overall, my back feels GREAT! I've been able to bend, swim, walk for 2 hours or more (with the brace), drive and even dance. Dr. Donath is clear about not overdoing it within the first year, so I continue to wear my brace during exhaustive activities, and I try to ice my back two to three times per day. I have noticed that depending on the weather or how I sit for long periods of time, I may feel a little more sore, but once I ice the back and get some rest I'm right as rain. Dr. Donath recommends a "tune up" visit ever month for the first year and I plan to do that. So, am I one hundred percent cured? Not yet. However, given my level of pain and discomfort when I initially saw Dr. Donath vs. now, I can confidently say that the treatment has been successful. As long as I continue to follow the activity guidelines, I expect to be back to one hundred percent within the next six months. Recommendations On the basis of my treatment and results, I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Donath's chiropractic services. I have had upper back and neck pain, along with numbness and tingling in my arm for about 4 years.
