The staff really are friendly and can't do enough for you. The location is stunning overlooking Widemouth Bay and with plenty of outside seating to enjoy the beautiful views. The food was absolutely fantastic, so much so that if I lived close by I'd be there at least once a week. One evening I tried the gammon steak which was a monster of a meal the gammon, which itself was a 12oz whopper and at least 2 inches thick, came with double fried eggs, pineapple rings, onion rings, chips and salad. It was all delicious but needless to say I couldn't eat it all. The portions are massive, the quality of food is excellent and the price is more than reasonable, I'd definitely recommend this place and if I ever find myself in Cornwall again I'll be making a bee line for the Bay View Inn!

Ok, so I'm the first review of this place but I have to do it... it was a great hotel experience…read more First, it's set on a lovely location on a bluff overlooking the sea in St. Austell, just perfect for a cool crisp walk on the beach over the rocks with fresh sea air making you feel alive. Second, the staff is wonderful and super friendly at the desk and everyone you run into is unbelievably pleasant. Third, it has a spa and a golf course so while I was getting a surprise facial and massage, my guy played a round of golf (that's a win-win in my book). Lastly, the best cream tea I've ever had. Literally. The scones were soooo fresh and the clotted cream and jam were of the highest quality and you can sit in this stodgy room overlooking the sea feeling very posh. Just a great way to spend the morning after a great stay. First class all the way, Carlyon.

Most important, however, was the complete lack of hospitality at this hotel and the poor quality of dining. The staff appear to have been trained to provide the service of a senior living property where mediocore meals are served as rapidly as possible. No one goes out of their way to provide assistance nor are they friendly. We were supposed to stay five nights after two nights of the rude service at this hotel and the rushed meals, we left. The sea location is lovely and the golf was free but that is the only positive statement I can make about this hotel. Based on the reviews I am seeing from years prior, it appears that this hotel has really gone down hill over the years.

The drive took longer than expected, and we got lost trying to locate it, but when we arrived at The Old Parsonage, Marg greeted us warmly and offered us tea and cake to help us unwind after our journey. Our room was on the second floor and featured the largest bathroom in the house. With a shower and tub, and a big window that let in plenty of light, the bathroom was pure luxury. The room was also quite spacious and pleasantly decorated. The breakfasts at The Old Parsonage were superb and used local ingredients. The porridge was delicious, and the eggs were incredibly fresh. I was delighted to see so many vegetarian options on the menu as well. Both Marg and Morag were extremely accommodating and helpful. We took several walks while in the area and Morag was happy to suggest routes and places to stop. A basket full of guide books and walks was available in the breakfast room and guests could borrow them as needed. The B&B is within walking distance of The Napoleon Inn, a very pleasant pub, or a short drive from the heart of Boscastle.

Our room was enormous and beautifully appointed with a serene modern elegance; the bathroom was very up-to-date; everything was impeccably clean. I've been in some B&Bs where everything is rule-bound; at the Old Parsonage, the tone is relaxed and flexible. The breakfast selection was extensive (they offer a daily menu for you to choose from) and delicious! The hostesses provide lots of information about what to do and where to eat in the area. We stayed here recently on a stag do. The hotel came as part of a package, so I have no idea how…read moremuch it actually costs to stay. In terms of the building, this is probably one of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in. Our 4 person room had a bunk bed and two additional beds, crammed in so tightly that you had to side step between them. We were lucky (!) enough to have an en-suite, which had a slide door which did not shut probably. The shower started off freezing cold for the first few minutes before, in a mater of seconds, changing to being painfully hot. Dangerously so in fact; I would not want to let a child use this shower. The other rooms in the hotel share bathrooms, each broken in their own way (toilet impossible to flush, shower hose broken off wall etc.). The place seemed generally dirty. When we arrived we each had to pay a £30 cash deposit, which was only returned after inspection and waiting around for 45 minutes on departure. They made a big fuss about how good their English breakfasts were: sadly these fell well below expectations, featuring only the bear minimum of beans, eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato and toast (no mushrooms, black pudding, hash browns here!). The ingredients all seemed to be from an economy/value supermarket range, and no-one in our group could stomach the sausages. They have a pool table in the front longe, and also an outside picnic table. The front of the hotel offers nice sea views. They also have a licensed bar (drinks poured from cans but at pub prices). On a positive note, the staff were genuinely friendly people, and seemed interested in where we were planning to go out, and what activities we had planned during the day (surfing). As such, I think this saved The Ridge from being 1 star - however, if it costs more than about £20 pppn to stay there I would definitely give this place a miss.

The rooms were spotless and cleaned daily, the towels were fluffy and soft.we had a short stay there in 2007. they offer B&B andB&BEM the choice is yours, all meals we haqd was top quality. the people who owned it were lovely. the only downside isthe area can be busy with young people. Try going out of season.
