Our Buffalo-based fam' road-tripped down to WV for Christmas break with no other motivation than to go someplace together that we had not been. We stumbled on the West Virginia Big Foot Museum as part of that adventure. We stayed in Bridgeport WV, and came across a brochure for the Flatwoods Monster Museum, also in Sutton WV. Just a half hour from Bridgeport, we decided to check it out. It was the Flatwoods Monster Museum owner/manager who pointed us just down the block to this museum.
As it turns out, West Virginia has a lot of connections to ghosts, alien, and cryptid lore, including everyone's most beloved cryptid, Big Foot. There have been many recorded sightings of Big Foot in the area, so much so that both paranormal enthusiasts and academics decided to put together this museum on the matter. The museum is located in a mixed-use building in the heart of the Sutton village, and is free admission.
The entrance to the museum is through a separate gift shop and cafe in front of the building. The museum itself consisted of three rooms. The first you enter is a well-stocked souvenir shop of Big Foot items, then two rooms of museum exhibits. It is a small, but bright and very well curated space, with sighting maps, footprint casts, and information about the history of the Big Foot legend. The store staff were all very friendly and informative.
Our family, which includes our two teens, had a great time checking out this neat little museum. If you are sightseeing in this part of WV, a stop in Sutton to visit both this museum and the Flatwoods Monster Museum just a block away is well worth it! read more
