Laid out in…read moreorder, it takes you through from the Romans to World War II, including special displays on Christopher Marlowe and Joseph Conrad, and has plenty of fascinating archaeological finds, clear, interesting explanatory panels and a few simple interactive activities for kids (although, who doesn't want to know their name in runes?). There's also a bit of info about the Poor Priests' Hospital building that the museum now occupies, interspersed throughout. For kids, there's the Rupert Bear Museum and an exhibit on Bagpuss, but I didn't really see those bits properly. In a city where the tourist attractions all give you a bit of history it was great to get all the different stories into perspective at this museum.

There are also sections on Joseph Conrad and Rupert Bear. It always holds the children's interest and it is worth visiting when they hold temporary exhibitions or workshops, often exploring Roman, or historical Canterbury.

They're usually quite entertaining too.  When we took a trip to Canterbury, I found the Canterbury Ghost Tour, which was highly recommended. Little did we know what we were in for. Our guide, the Canterbury Ghost Hunter, was quite something. From the second we arrived at the meeting point he was just full of banter and energy, getting to know his tour attendees and joking about everything and everyone.  He didn't just tell us historical tragedies, ghost sightings and stories of the olden times, he added anecdotes from his travels, hilarious half-knowledge about other countries and cultures, and the weirdest side tracking tidbits I've ever heard from a tour guide.  The group of American students that was with us left halfway through the tour, whether this was down to their curfew as they claimed or the fact that they didn't seem to enjoy any of the jokes and jabs, we'll probably never know, but they seemed awfully confused. Our guide did use a lot of pop culture references in his storytelling, with which he had the rest of us in stitches. It was the funniest, craziest tour I've been on to date.

In fact, wandering through here I thought it was a pretty interesting place, and it does focus on the Roman history, which was around something like 2000 years ago, and it is mindboggling to somebody who comes from Australia. There has been talk for years of new location and it was hoped that the new Whitefriars complex would find a new home for it, but it wasn't to be. I have given it four stars because the service is great and the staff are really friendly. If you ask for a internet password you can order books from home, for a 25p, fee and have them shipped in from other libraries which makes up for the limited stock.

The rooms are layers out in a timeline. The very first thing you see is a video that goes over the battle at Dunkirk. You then move on to learn about the civilians, life during the war, and Dunkirk's place in all of that. There are a lot of artifacts and memorabilia. There is a very well done model of some of the shops involved in the rescue. And there is a lot to read! You can easily spend a good hour learning about this important piece of history. I highly recommend a visit.

Generations of medieval pilgrims passed under the gatehouse arch on their way to the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. Road traffic now flows through the arch-it's a bit of an eye-opener to see a modern coach navigate the narrow opening. The West Gate was built by Archbishop Sudbury to replace an earlier Roman gate through the city walls. The west Gate was finished in 1380, but in the following year, Sudbury himself met a violent end at the hands of rebellious peasants during Wat Tyler's Peasant's Revolt. For many years the West Gate served as the town prison, connected by a walkway to the police station next door. Above the portcullis slot is a condemned cell', where prisoners awaiting execution were held. A bronze 18th-century medallion was found beneath the floorboards of the prison floor during recent repairs. The upper floor of the gatehouse is given over to a small West Gate Museum. Here will find armor and weapons used by defenders of Canterbury from the medieval period to World War 2 . Children can dress up in replica armor, and see the old prison cells within the gatehouse tower.
