I love these museums, especially in towns that have existed for thousands of years, as is the case with Canterbury. In fact, wandering through here I thought it was a pretty interesting place, and it does focus on the Roman history, which was around something like 2000 years ago, and it is mindboggling to somebody who comes from Australia. It is worth visiting this tucked away museum if only to see the remarkably well-preserved mosaic floor of a roman house. There is plenty to do for several hours for school children, including building arcges, making mosaics and delving into trays to discover mouse bones and shells. It is also high tech with some interactive displays, aswell as models of Roman shops, clothes and jewellery. It is free to residents who carry the residents' card. read more

A nice museum concentrating as you would expect on the Romans in Canterbury. Quite old-fashioned but some good displays as well as the usual pottery that is less that exciting. A bit expensive for quite a small place if you have to pay full price. read more

Canterbury Roman Museum was something I visited because my train was 3 hours later and I needed to do something to fill in the time. And I must say I was pleasantly surprised. While I did have a faint idea from Lindsey Davis novels that Canterbury was a site of Roman civilisation, it was quite something to see carefully preserved excavations of real Roman floors. I thought it fantastic that they have actually built the museum around the remains rather than transporting the remains to a 'convenient' location. The audio visual presentations and the information sheets were also surprisingly interesting - they have a computer generated model of how the house would have looked when it was still standing - and then you can go and see the bits that still are and imagine the rest around you. It's extraordinary - the first museum of the kind I've seen. There are also many traditional displays of artifacts but with little games of guessing where they might have fitted or what they might have been part of. I really enjoyed myself and if you're even slightly interested in history, it's well worth a visit. read more
