The fries with the spicy mayo and teriyaki sauce made the dish. It was very savory. My son enjoyed it. The fried calamari was also good. The calamari and jalapeno peppers were crispy and salted well. The sweet and sour sauce that accompanied it was added a slight heat to the dish. We enjoyed our meal here and would return the next time we are in Santa Cruz. read more

I returned to West End over a year after my last visit, and so much has changed! They rebranded to West End Izakaya and now serve Asian-inspired dishes, rather than their previous American farm-to-table menu. Honestly, I can't say this change is an improvement. My grandma and I visited around dinner on a Saturday and were seated on the (dog-friendly) patio. They did have propane heaters, but not enough of them, so it was quite chilly. For drinks, we both got hot Green Tea to warm up, which was very standard - served in pre-packed tea bags. For food, we ordered the Okonomiyaki Fries and Maitake Mushroom Flatbread to share. The Okonomiyaki Fries were pretty good and I enjoyed all the toppings, especially the spicy pink mayo. I usually prefer thinner fries, but I liked the crispy texture. However, the Maitake Mushroom Flatbread was a bit disappointing. There just wasn't enough bechamel and mozzarella on top and the flavor somewhat bland. She was running around and very busy so it was understandable. We asked her to move us to a different table to be further away from the door and the breeze. She obliged us. We weren't sure about what to order but decided on the ahi poke, calamari and mushroom flatbread. The ahi had fennel all around which gave the whole dish a licorice taste that we didn't enjoy. Made our way to Santa Cruz from San Bruno city and our maps took CA 1. Boyfriend was craving a burger so when we exited the highway, I searched the closest burger spot and came across a couple. Dogs are welcomed on the patio area! We arrived around 1pm and it was pretty empty as well on a Saturday. Honestly didn't really know what to order but my bf ordered the smash burger and side fries ( don't like you have to pay $5 for side of fries) I think fries should always come with a burger. My kids (3 years old) shared the mushroom pizza . Mushrooms were shitakee like, Medium pizza with 6 small slices, it was MID. Not worth $22 also Didnt want to try anything else. Advice: come for the smash burgers and fries, soo good and even my girls wanted the burger more than their pizza, they loved the mushrooms too even tho they normally take out all toppings! Although I ill say the Inari was not what I was expecting. I liked the tempura jalapeños that came along with the Calamari - nice pairing. SAKE-DON was quite tasty. Really liked how all the flavors in it came together. The fish itself could have been a little bit more tender/juicy. Good things were said about the Ramen and the Fried Chicken that my fellow diners ordered. My husband got a "kiss Godzilla" cocktail which I thought was quite nice. Service was a little slow. Found this place because I saw good reviews and they have a large outside patio for my dog. However, I left feeling very disappointed. The prices are on the higher-end and there is absolutely nothing special about their items. The food was mediocre, not tasty at all for the price we paid. We got the hamachi and it was not worth paying over $30 for 4 pieces of thin hamachi. The vermicelli pork bowl was also bland and had barely any meat on it. I was really excited to try the new revamp of this place. But I'd recommend ordering food online and MAYBE it'll be ready by the time you come to pick it up. We made reservations, got here and got seated right away. But sat for a while. Didn't get acknowledged for about 20 min when someone dropped waters off at our table. No mention of someone being right with us or anything. We watched servers walk past us numerous times. The restaurant wasn't busy, so not really sure why the wait.. we will see if we stay long enough for them to take our order so we can enjoy the food.. TBD.. 40min later and we got a server to take our order. Let see how long it takes to get our food.. The family next to us was really friendly and when they waved down someone for themselves they told them that we had been waiting as well. As soon as the server was done with them they came to us and took our order. The food came out really quick and she was very apologetic. Thankfully the food was PHENOMENAL!! My daughter had been here before so she suggested we start with the Castelvetrano olives. They were very garlicky and we quickly finished them. My daughter ordered the mortadella and pistachio flatbread. The flatbread was a very pizza-like dough which I prefer. It came with a white cheese sauce rather than a tomato based red sauce. Unique choice of ingredients and excellent flavor. I would order this again. I ordered the burger. The pickled onions and house sauce made the burger special and set it apart from others. The side of fries were hot. They tasted great but were even better with a side of ranch. Its a family-friendly gastropub set in a large, open and casual space. It's adjacent to another brewery, coffee spot, and several wine tasting places. Expect the atmosphere here to be lively for sure. They have their own parking lot in the front along with a shared lot in the back. I don't drink beer much these days but I do enjoy the occasional cider. The Scrumpy Ginger Lime Cider is refreshing for a warm evening. The menu has many small bites and larger entrees. We ordered: * Smoked Ribs with Chipotle Beet and Mint Greek Yogurt sauces on the side. Excellent appetizer for sharing, and the meat was soft and seasoned without being super salty. * The Kid's menu did not have burgers, but man they have an awesome cheese pizza that's super soft and huge for sharing. Definitely Asian influences with the coconut curry and shredded veggies. Went here after seeing they were a "dog friendly" place, and we had our corgi who we just took to the dog beach. We found parking right away, but had a hard time finding this place after we parked. Once we found it, we were seated right away outside. I'm not sure if we went on a bad day, but none of the staff seemed like they wanted to be there. The host, who sat us, saw us with our dog or why she would sit us outside, and our server saw our dog as well, but never did they give her a bowl of water. I've been here before the pandemic and had fond memories. I'm sad to update that those memories no longer reflect the present day. Came here for lunch and the menu was pretty limited. Everything seemed to be a saucy, salty interpretation of an Asian dish. 2/5 - nicoise salad. The salmon was good cause it wasn't drowning in sauce. But their soy sauce egg was like eating a block of sea salt. Usually, soy sauce eggs have a mild saltiness to them but this one was like eating straight up soy sauce...I don't know how they got it to be that salty. The lettuce was drowning in dressing, had to scrape it off as I ate. 2/5 - wagyu smash burger. I ordered it to be lettuce wrapped and the waiter said it would come on a bed of lettuce, which I was fine with. It came on a sad "cot" of lettuce instead of a bed. The lettuce was wilty and minimal. I also asked for it to be well done and the waiter was like "of course! They're all well done." And guess what, a lot of the middle was pink. I had to eat around the edges and give the rest to my husband because I didn't want to return it and wait another 30 minutes for my food. The okonomiyaki fries I had on the side were the winner. 2/5 - Korean BBQ chicken flat bread. This dish also fell flat. Really saucy, barely any chicken or cheese on the flat bread. We decided to try out West End Tap and Kitchen since they are also a dog friendly establishment. The restaurant resembles a huge warehouse. There is a parking lot, but the spaces feel small and it was packed when we got there. Luckily, we got in when someone was leaving. The restaurant was also really busy and the hostess told us it would be a 25 minute wait. I gave her my phone number and got a confirmatory text that would message us again when a table was ready. Thankfully, we only had to wait about 10 minutes when I was notified that our outside table was ready. It was really nice out and there was ample shade on the patio area. The waitress brought out waters for us and Coco and the menus. The restaurant as pretty busy so it took some time before our waitress came back to take our order. This is what we got: 1. Roast beef and cheddar flatbread (mine) 2. Burger (his) 3. Cross hatch beer (his) 4. Mai tai IPA (mine) The beers were the first to come out and very refreshing on that hot day. The food came out within the next 10 minutes. I thought the food was pretty good. Everything was made fresh and smelled delicious. The fries that came with the burger were crispy and not oily. Zach said that the burger was really good. I think if the flatbread had more meat I would have liked it better. It tasted good, but I feel like it was 80% bread and no meat. This brewery is a little higher scale than the other breweries in the complex. Food prices around the 15-20$ range. I had the ribs and no 38 nitro stout, both were amazing! The ambiance is very comfortable. They have semi private booths with high walls that make you feel like you are alone with your company, regular tables and chairs, outdoor seating (tented and open) as well as bar seating. The rib appetizer presentation was beautiful! I loved the glaze, as well as the garnishes, with the plate. Ribs with a few beers were a perfect combo for my afternoon strolling about Santa Cruz. The bartender (preferred bar seating) was highly attentive and educated in the spirits offered. Not sure if they added a bunch of battered bits to fill up the bowl, but at least the calamari was good. * House salad - It was whatever... salad. The greens were wilty and the dressing was non-existent. * Bianca Flatbread - Whoever came up with this should be ashamed and whoever cooked and prepped our flatbread should be fired. The dough was raw in the middle and the excessive amount of oil made this pizza soggy. It was unbearable. Did the kitchen look at this and taste it? It was actually disgusting. * Mushroom Flatbread - Is it me or is West End cutting costs and quality? I could have sworn the flatbreads used to be huge with a thick crispy crust... and now they're just pizza sauce on play dough. * Burger - something changed here too. Did West End get a new chef - like one fresh out of culinary school? The burger was dry and flavorless. All in all, West End has gone downhill, extremely downhill. Had this place saved in my bookmarks for quite some time after seeing it on Yelp. I can't remember the exact food item it was that drew me in, but something looked good enough that had me thinking I needed to come here! Was in Santa Cruz on a drizzly day, had some time to kill so we decided to fill the time with food! A nice hearty burger on a wet day? Sounds good to us! Since it was our first time here, and my mom and I both wanted the burger, we opted to split it and get a flatbread so that we could try more of the menu. The current flatbreads on the menu when we were there must've been pretty new because there were no pictures of any of them on Yelp. Though it wasn't my first choice, we went with the chicken tomatillo flatbread. Liked the shaved chicken and that it had a good bit of garlic, but it could've used a little more flavor. We actually had quite a bit leftover, when I re-heated it at home I put some honey on it and that was a nice addition. Helped balance the richness of the cheese. Excited to see an updated flatbread menu next time because some of the older ones I came across in their Yelp images looked amazing. The burger was the real star of the show here. Cooked perfectly, super juicy, and had a nice tang from the sauce and pickled onions. After talking one bite of it I set it aside and ate the flatbread because I wanted to end on the deliciousness of the burger. The fries served with it were extremely crispy and tasted really good. They gave a huge portion of fries, even though we were sharing the plate it felt like we each had our own serving. Didn't get anything to drink here since our next stop was a distillery, but they had a nice selection of local wines. Didn't pay attention to the beer list. Only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it's a bit pricey. The burger starts at $17-$18 and then anything you want to add on is at least an additional $2, even for cheese! Though it was a good burger, don't think it's worth $20. Would love to come back here, will just have to be on pay day. As for parking, if you don't know this area it can be a bit tricky and crowded. It's located in an area with a bunch of tasting rooms and small shops. The parking lot is pretty small and the front part is often full. Saw this place and went for a try and we were blown away Food- Tried Pilsner and lager and beers were awesome Tried Shishito peppers - There were two color chillies green n red and red were awesome with flavor and green one were hawwwwt. Flatbreads - Man 0 man dese were awesome, we tried Slow roasted Tomato and Mushroom Garlic and they are super duper yummy Also tried Chicken Strips with french fries - Fries are delicious- it has been very long time that i tasted fries to be crispy and yummy and chicken strips were so tender and delicious. Kids were staring at the way we are eating these kids dish. This place is amazing to go din with family with Kids, they have chalkboard and they give kids crayons to color and play with chalk and parents get some time to breath and eat.
