tomato gazpacho, house made hummus, mamaw's front porch cocktail
    Audrey P.

I popped in yesterday soon after they opened as I happened to be in the area enjoying some solo time. They were booked for the inside but offered a table with a timeframe, which was incredibly accommodating, but I didn't need to take up a whole table. They had a "communal" table/"bar" right by the door and were happy to seat me there. The tomato gazpacho was a special and the perfect combo of chill and spicy, and though hummus is hummus, theirs was house made and some of the best! I enjoyed my cocktail as well -- a strawberry basil gin concoction called Mawmaw's Front Porch. Service was kind and quick, and I loved the open kitchen from where I was seated. It felt a little bit like sneaking into an episode of THE BEAR (without all the yelling). I held back from saying, "Yes, Chef." The dining room was rich and moody, and I'd love to come back with my husband for a date, but we will definitely make reservations. It was a popular place, and I can see why! The vintage emporium next door was the perfect after-apps browsing spot and a lot bigger than it looks from the outside.

My daughter was married at The Oaks at Salem recently, and the venue required us to choose a…read morecaterer from their provided list. After meeting with three caterers, we decided to move forward with 39 West. We enjoyed the food we sampled during our tasting, and felt we had made the right choice. Unfortunately, what you don't learn during a tasting is how a caterer actually executes their job on the day of the event. Our wedding count was 100 people, which in the grand scheme of things is not a large event. We discussed our plans multiple times with our contact at 39West. The venue had two bar locations, and it was important to us that both be manned, as we didn't want our wedding guests to have to wait in a long line to get a drink. We agreed to have a bartender work the 2nd bar during the cocktail hour. On the day of the wedding, 39West didn't bother to set up the second bar. When questioned about this by the wedding planner, the woman in charge barked that they simply couldn't do it. We were unaware that this had happened until we showed up at the cocktail hour after bridal photos, and to our dismay saw our guests standing in a line 25-people deep, waiting to get a drink. We had also requested glasses of wine be passed on platters to alleviate the crowds at the bar. This was never done. The bartenders were busy trying to strike up conversations with our guests as they approached the bar. Isn't their job to serve drinks efficiently? I could only think that they were more concerned in trying to get a tip from each guest rather than simply do their job. Our wedding planner provided the caterer a detailed description in writing of what our table settings were to look like. Charger plates were to be wrapped by a napkin which was tri-folded. The charger plates we paid extra for were never used when setting the tables. The water glasses were supposed to be pre-filed and pre-set on the tables (we had to pay extra for this) but were never set on the tables. Instead of the desired visual with our charger plate, and napkin folded around it, our place settings were all random throughout the dining area. Some place settings had knives placed sideways where the plate should have been and they were being used to hold up the napkins which were draped off the table. Others had napkins crumpled in a ball. The tables honestly looked like a 2-year old had set them. The main entree took extremely long to be served, and I believe the issue was simply that they did not bring enough staff for the event. We thought we were getting a professional caterer for the event however it seemed as if they tried to cut costs by utilizing as little hired help as possible. I contacted the owner after the wedding, and let him know how his company had let us down. He did give us some money back, however that doesn't right the wrong that occured, or change our memories of what should have been a beautiful day.

On 2/26/20 I contracted w/ Jennifer King (JK) of Mister and That Dang Woman Catering (MATDW) to…read moredeliver food for 3/28/20 wedding rehearsal dinner & paid $758.77 in full. On 03/19/20 the event venue cancelled event citing Covid. I trusted JK to reschedule the delivery of food and did not require a refund. Rescheduled for November 29, 2020. In July I texted JK stating that I had received no confirmation by either text or email of this date change. There was no response to my 11/19/20 telephone voicemail. On 11/29/20 delivery cancelled due to JK being exposed to Covid. I tried to reschedule for 12/19/20. King stated that she needed to check w/her husband & promised, "I'll get right back to you as soon as he gets back from the farm." No response in 8 days. On 12/07/20 I emailed & texted JK my desire to cancel the contract & get a refund citing pattern of communication failure. No response. I then called her to discover she had blocked my number. On 12/15/20 my husband called Jennifer & spoke with her reiterating our desire to cancel & get refunded. Jennifer said she would get back to him in a week. She did not. She blocked my husband's cell phone number as well. Demand letter sent 12/31/20 by certified mail. No response. Filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau of Willow Springs. King ignored the BBB's request for MATDW to resolve the issue and the complaint went unanswered. On April 28, 2022 I filed a small claims court action against Mister And That Dang Woman Catering LLC in the Johnston County Court . Court date was set for June 6, 2022 and the summons properly served by Johnston County Sheriff's Department. No one from MATDW appeared at the trial so the magistrate ruled in our favor. The next step was to have the Johnston County Sheriff's Department do what is called a "writ of execution" meaning a representative of that department makes contact to arrange payment. In working with the Johnston County Sheriff's Department I discovered that ours was not the only recent small claims court case that had also won a judgement against MATDW. Jennifer King paid half of the due amount and then waited until the absolute last day to pay all of it. The final amount paid was $1019.76 which included all of the court costs for filing as well as 8% interest. If you do have a claim against MATDW, North Carolina law requires filing the small claims summons in the county the LLC's owners reside which for MATDW is Johnston County. The Johnston County Clerk of the Court is very efficient and helpful and I suggest using the free computer to research the public records. I did and discovered that Jennifer King has an extensive public record of criminal convictions. From 2001 to 2016 she was arrested and convicted for felony larceny, writing worthless checks, possession of stolen goods, obtaining property under false pretenses, shoplifting, and embezzlement from her employer. King was imprisoned for the embezzling and later was convicted of violating her probation. Jennifer King ignored all requests to resolve the issue, blocked phone numbers, banned complaining customers from reviewing MATDW on Facebook, ignored even court summons in the likely hope that unhappy customers will find the process of getting their money back to be too daunting and give up and she keeps hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. Pursue justice otherwise she's learned a new way to steal money.
