Music was our top priority for our wedding after we selected a venue (ahead of flowers, decor, even photography). We interviewed several LA-based DJs, and stopped as soon as we met DJ Sota. We hired him for our MC, music, lighting, and photo booth needs. 1) Great DJ- Our main priority was keeping the dance floor packed for the entire reception. DJ Sota helped us think through a playlist to get people out of their seats after the first dance and after dinner. He discussed the sequence of events for our reception so we could pick the right songs at the right time. We had DJ Sota for our wedding on March 30, 2013 and I can only say that he is an amazing DJ. We interviewed with alot of DJ's from ones that are two man teams to those we speak both Vietnamese and English but after we met with DJ Sota my wife and I had a good feeling about him and he surely did not disappoint. Our wedding was a Asian wedding and half of the guests didn't speak English so we were a little worried at first but let me say it didn't matter if they didn't understand him they had a great time. First the Music selection was great...We left the selections up to DJ Sota and he guided us on which types of music that should be played during each setting. I was also shocked that my older uncles and aunts got up and starting dancing to music they never heard of. Second Timeline, the weeks heading up to the wedding we starting making our timeline for the reception and DJ Sota contacted us and gave us recommendations to how it could flow better. He also coordinated with the reception location, photographer and videographer to make sure that all the special events like first dance, flower toss, anniversary dance, and cake cutting would be synched with them so that those special events won't be missed. Our younger guests absolutely loved DJ Sota. My wife and I don't dance much so we were worried that the dance floor would be empty but it was the total opposite. DJ Sota kept it upbeat by bringing in different types of music from oldies to current selections so that the guests from all ages would enjoy the dance floor. He even got the dance floor started by having people come to the dance floor to do special dances like the harlem shake, cha cha slide, electirc slide, and cupid shuffle. He even got onto the dance floor to show everyone how to do it which was highly appreciated. All in all our wedding went great and I really think alot of it had to do with DJ Sota being able to coordinate everything with our other venders and more importantly being able to keep the wedding upbeat. Choosing a DJ for my wedding was something I wasn't excited about doing. I was a little worried about choosing a DJ because, unlike other components of a wedding (flowers, catering, photography), I couldn't actually hear/see a DJ's work before an event.... What can I say? DJ Sota did a FANTASTIC job MC'ing my wedding. As with all weddings, we were on a very tight schedule was delayed at the start. Being resourceful, he had an extended playlist of fantastic music to help ease the guests as we were waiting to get the ceremony started. The music selection he had was a hit with the guests. We gave the input for what type of music to play and he found a way to make everything fit. When it comes to professional entertainment, DJ Sota clearly knows how to deliver. I'm a musician and a lead singer for a band, so I know what it takes to engage an audience, read the crowd, and keep them interested. As a performer, I'm constantly critiquing others and you can trust me when I say DJ Sota executes these fundamental challenges at his events. He knows how to transition between songs to keep the momentum going and I could tell that he too was a musician based on his sense of timing, rhythm, and understanding of when key changes are appropriate. After speaking with him at my best friends wedding, my suspicions proved to be correct. We both shared a passion for music, played in bands, and even liked a lot of the same bands/artists. Awesome! However, that's just one aspect about DJ Sota's service and there's so much more to being a good business person in the entertainment/service industry than just being a great DJ. You don't earn 5 star reviews unless you're delivering on all fronts, and he absolutely does. While working the event, he was well organized, articulate, and fun! His song selections were great and so was the lighting. He even played one of our bands songs during the reception, which was a special touch that I wasn't expecting. Since then, I've always recommended his services to anyone I know who needs a DJ and I'll continue to do so in the future. Lastly, everyone always wants to talk about price. How much does it cost? Is he expensive? Can't I find someone cheaper? Well, like anything else in life, you get what you pay for. Good work is not cheap and cheap work is not good. If you want quality entertainment, stop pinching your pennies and start opening your wallet. Where to begin?! We hired Dakota back in 2019 with an original wedding date in the Spring of 2020. Through multiple date changes, pandemic, and brush fire scares, we finally settled on a date in late August of 2021. Dakota was flexible in adjusting his availability every time we wearily asked again. After two years of having him "booked", it was finally time to start discussing preferences, requests, ideas, etc. We had very specific songs/artists we wanted to hear on our big night (I think we included a list well beyond the number of songs requested that we specifically wanted played) and although I know a DJ's art is to create the perfect playlist, Dakota was receptive to our requests and was on board for our preference of party tunes for the reception. He gave suggestions that were helpful and even when we politely declined a traditional wedding routine, he acknowledged our choice and moved on. It may sound strange, but we appreciated being able to say 'no' and not feel guilty. While vendors are clearly the experts in their craft, at the end of the day, this is YOUR wedding and you should not feel obligated to agree with all suggestions because that's what "normally" happens. We have to be honest, our DJ was the vendor we were most anxious about; not because we didn't trust Dakota, we had definitely done our research and knew he had more than enough experience and happy clients for us to rest easy. But for the big night, a DJ can really have a big impact on the overall vibe. Your cake could get messed up, some florals go missing, photographer takes a few bad shots and no one will notice; but your DJ can make or break the night with their words (too many or too little), their song choices and transitions, and their enthusiasm. We must say that Dakota did not disappoint in the least bit and kept the party going all night long! From an outdoor reception to an indoor after-party, he played an array of alternative, house, hip hop, and classic rock that we requested. We could not have asked for a better wedding/party! With so many engagements over the last year, we can't tell you how many people asked us for our DJ info after our wedding. We will vouch time and again for Dakota and team, as we also used them for our photobooth too! Jimmy was incredible and went above and beyond his call of duty. He created a customized photo album for us with all our guests photo strips and commentary and even offered to help my dad load his car at the end of the night. What?! DJ Sota Entertainment is a five star business that I would recommend to anyone looking for a professional and extremely talented DJ. Dakota Sottosanto was our DJ for our wedding in Huntington Beach, CA. I hired Dakota in March for our December wedding. He books up fast so I wanted to make sure that he would be available. From the moment I contacted him he made everything easy and I felt I was in good hands. He emailed me a DJ planning form, he has over 100,000 songs! I was able to take my time and go over each detail of the reception. Since he was so helpful I asked if he could recommend a coordinator, florist and photographer. Turns out his wife is a coordinator and a darn good one too! I hired her the next day (see spear are review for Stop and Stare events). They are a great team, I highly recommend having them both at your wedding. About two weeks before the wedding I met up with Dakota. He had a timeline all mapped out for me and all I had to do was fill in what songs we wanted for our grand entrance, bouquet toss, garter toss etc. He steered me in into how to pick music for each section of the reception and it was perfect. The day of the event he showed up early, was all set up, I didn't have to follow up at all. His DJ stand has a smooth cover around it so you don't see any wires. We chose Dakota as the DJ for our wedding on 11/6/16 and we were thrilled with how the night went. He was very hands on with everything, from sending us a rough timeline during our initial inquiry, giving us an online database to pick and choose our music from, to several phone calls where we went over all the details leading up to the event. He also had no problem giving suggestions, which was really useful in the end. We even had some last minute changes to the music that Dakota handled seamlessly. The day itself went perfectly; Dakota kept the dance floor going, kept everything on schedule, and made all the dances really special (one of my favorites was how he approached the 'anniversary dance'). I've had several friends and family tell me afterwards about how great he was at keeping everything moving and how much fun they had on the dance floor. My fiance did most of the work on the music portion of our wedding but I can say DJ Sota and DJ Vaughn did an absolutely amazing job for my wedding last night in San Diego. DJ Sota was extremely communicative via email and answered any and all questions we had. He helped us create a great timeline for the day and made helpful suggestions for music choices when we were lost. Even on the morning of my wedding I was able to email him to extend my processional song and sure enough he came through! DJ Vaughn was our actual DJ for the night and if I could give him 10 stars, I would. He was FANTASTIC! He never left his area and he played the best dance songs. DJ Sota's company was great to work with. I got married last October and am slow to getting around to this review, as I'm not typically a big reviewer...at all. However, I felt compelled to get the word out about our experience with DJ Sota and DJ Dave. We emailed a lot of different DJ companies and a lot of their prices were ridic for what we would get. I emailed DJ Sota for a quote and his pricing was VERY reasonable! Before making my vendor decision, I scheduled a Skype meeting with Dakota (DJ Sota) and DJ Dave, since Dave would be our DJ while Dakota was already booked. I wanted to get a good feel for their vibe and how much they love music and have knowledge about what we wanted, which was a lot of various decade chill music for dinner and all 90's hip hop and other party music during reception. I had some no no's too (no Bieber/Miley/Selena Gomez tween ish), and they totally got our style do's and dont's. Dakota was also prompt on email responses and totally even helped us plan not only the music for big moments (i.e. Aisle walk, wedding party entry, first dance) but also the day's schedule with his predetermined questionnaire and planner. This was so helpful. We hired Dave and it was a great decision. Everyone was packed on the floor dancing most of the night and he was super professional and kind. We really appreciated his hard work in not only DJing, but also hooking up the ceremony speakers and uplights and making the lighting look awesome. Like many other brides, DJ Sota was the first time I had hired a DJ and like all the previous reviews here say, he did not disappoint! Dakota was the one that did my wedding ceremony and reception. He was patient and helped with every step of the planning process regarding the timeline and had some great suggestions as well and also accommodated our song requests. The dance floor stayed busy during the whole night with the exception of photos with guests, but even then as I was posing for pictures, I looked over the audience and saw that they were just itching to get back on the dance floor. And like the yelper before me said, what you're paying for is quality. I just knew how stressful this important day would be and how it could have gone wrong with a cheap DJ who had little to no experience and lack of insurance. I was anxious about having an overly loud DJ that would make the night awkward/uncomfortable or cheesy. He listened to my concerns and he really turned out to be the perfect match for what we were looking for. He kept the energy high and had the exact vibe we were hoping for. The only thing I wish I would have done differently would be to hire Dakota's wife, Kristen, for wedding planning. When I met with Dakota I expressed concerns about the wedding going smoothly because we had a "day of" coordinator but the communication was not there. I did not know what to expect on the day of the wedding because I was not familiar with the whole process and didn't know the right questions I should be asking my coordinator. Kristen happened to be there and she came in and talked to me and gave me such great advice and information about what I should ask and verify with our coordinator. She was so sweet and kind. If we were further away from the wedding when I met with them I would have definitely hired her. My husband and I recently got married and used West Coast Wedding DJs for our reception and we are so glad that we did! Dakota was SO GREAT to work with- not only was he the emcee for our wedding reception- but he also did ALL of our lighting in the ballroom. He helped us create the overall look we wanted in the reception room by adding tons of purple uplights, pin spotting and helped create a custom monogram for us that matched exactly with all of our other décor. DJ Sota Entertainment brought professionalism with a smile and an energy I will brag about for years to come! Dakota was the DJ for my wedding this past September at Seven Degrees in Laguna Beach and I was overly impressed with his willingness to not only customize our event exactly how we wanted but also his ability to make last minute changes. Just a day before my wedding I found out that I needed to make a CD (instead of streaming it) with my ceremony music and was freaking out that I would not be able to have exactly what I had hoped for on my wedding day. I had music that was not common at all and I was able to find the tracks on u tube. I frantically called Dakota to see what could be done about this. I figured I would probably have to change the music to something that he already had a copy of but it was worth a try. He went above and beyond his duties and somehow figured out how to copy the tracks from utube onto a CD. Not only did he email me a copy of the music but he also brought a copy himself to give to my venue media guy. He really didn't have to do that and it meant so much that he did just in case! He really saved the day for me. His energy all night was really amazing. All of my guests were on the dance floor and literally all night. He played every song I had asked him to and took requests from my guests as well. I got so many compliments on the music he played and Dakota all night and many weeks after my wedding. He did an amazing job and I really could not have asked for a better wedding DJ. I would and will recommend him to anyone! In addition, I am an event coordinator at a local restaurant in Newport Beach and when we were planning our Employee Holiday Party and hiring a DJ came up, my Boss (who also attended my wedding) jumped on the idea of hiring Dakota before I could event suggest it. I asked Dakota of his availability for the night we had our party planned and he was unavailable since he just had a major knee surgery. Dakota's excellent performance left me, my new bride, and our families all in awe after our wedding. Our "wedding coordinator" contact at our venue ended up disappearing and doing nothing for most of the day, and Dakota stepped up and kept us on schedule and the wedding moving. He could do this because he actually sat down and went through our whole wedding with us for an hour a few days before the wedding, down to phonetically spelling the names of our wedding party for the grand entrance. He even drove to our venue to check it out for his set up! Dakota did an amazing job as the DJ and MC for our wedding on 6/20/15. My wife and I looked high and low as we both are not originally from the Southern California area. Some vendors told us that you can't effectively have one person act as the DJ and MC --- Dakota proved that wrong. He kept our wedding entertained the entire night and even some slight of hand to get people up and dancing. Dakota uses an online interface so my wife and I could list songs we definitely wanted to hear on our special day along with the songs we didn't want to hear. Setting this up was fun and easy. Dakota met with us about a week or two before our event. From there things were handled. My wife and I had nothing to worry about--- we didn't look at our clock or worry about the evening's schedule the entire night. Wedding was on March 7, 2014. I've only been to a few weddings in my life and most of the wedding DJ's I've seen are alright, but not great. They do a decent job and for most people I guess that works. This was different though because this was OUR wedding. My job was to find a DJ who can read a crowd and keep everyone engaged when they needed to and at other times, sit back and let the music do the talking. I stumbled upon Dakota on Wedding Wire and instantly I noticed NOTHING but 5 star reviews. I started watching the videos, looked at the pictures, and read the reviews and saw nothing but praise. I emailed Dakota about information and was instantly pleased by the prompt response. Dakota provided all the information I asked for and then some. My (now) wife and I met up with Dakota was pleased by his professionalism mixed in with excitement with the soon to be married couple . What made us feel even better was that he had just done a reception at the venue we were to be married at, so he knew the location and talked about setups he's done in the past. We instantly booked him because we knew he was the one for us. Leading up to the wedding Dakota was in constant communication with us sending us more information than we could handle and it was great. Once our itinerary was complete, Dakota was more than willing to look it over and gave great suggestions to have the wedding flow more smoothly. This review is for Josiah. He was our DJ for our wedding day and he did an absolute amazing job! During grand entrance, he pronounced everyone's name correctly. He also followed our playlist for most of our reception tailored to our music taste. And if our guests had any song request, he would make sure to run it by us first. I was really pleased that he didn't play a song twice during dancing hour because that is always a pet peeve of mine when I'm at a wedding reception. When he asked our guests to stay quiet for speeches, he asked maybe one or two times even though they didn't stay completely quiet. I really liked that he didn't keep bugging our guests to be absolutely quiet since we all know it was impossible to do with 200+guests. He moved on nicely without any rudeness or awkwardness. All in all, Josiah was great. He was lively and had a great upbeat personality! We also worked with Dakota on the planning process and he was super detailed on every aspect of the reception. Hands down the best wedding DJ I have ever experienced. DJ Sota was professional, helped answer all of our questions, and was extremely responsive via email and phone. We had a planning session where he helped us create a timeline, gave us advice on song choices, and got to know our preferences. The day before the wedding we had to make some last minute adjustments and DJ Sota had no problem helping us out. DJ Vaughn was our DJ and MC on our wedding day and he was amazing. Our friends could not stop talking about how great he was and we cannot say enough good things about him. As an MC, he was professional and had a great personality. As a DJ, he knew how to read the crowd, had the best song selection, and kept everyone on the dance floor all night long.
